Number 7

Number 7

It’s time for Number 7! And to get to Number 7, we jump only nine points from Steak at Number 8. A lot of bands and their albums were close together this year, well, at certain points in the list that is, but spilling the beans a little, the Top 5 will make bigger jumps in points. Well, sort off. Anyway, the band we find on Number 7 has been making the Stoner HiVe Top 20 Countdown back in 2011 & 2015. And we really thought we mentioned their new album on the HiVe when it was release in September. But we just realized we did not. It’s their sixth full length and brings you all that golden bluesy hardrock, that propelling groove and that pulsating stonerrock we’ve come to love from these crazy Virginia Beach four. A bit of Sabbath and a whole lot of Ozzy, thanks to the pitch and energy of the vocals. And then there’s that proto touch, that seventies love, it’s smash ‘n grab, take all you can from all the heavy rock genres you love kind of thing. And that makes this album one hell of a ride! On Number 7 we find!

Stoner HiVe's Top 5 Artists listened to last week

Stoner HiVe's
Top 5 Artists listened to last week:

Gudger (22)
Lo-Pan (20)

Aah yes, the world will finally get to spin the debut effort Sunlight by Freedom Hawk on vinyl, soon to be release via Ripple Music. The acoustic John Garcia album The Coyote Who Spoke In Tongues is a break from his earlier work, but if you dug the final track Her Bullets Energy of his self-titled album, you will love this record as well! Read our little screed about that damn fine new record by Vermilion Whiskey on the blog. And a buddy of mine keeps raving on about Gudger, we get it. Their second album titled II is simply amazing! And the new Lo-Pan record In Tensions is just as awesome as well!

What a week!

Number 16

Number 16

“I am not strict vegan, because I'm a hedonist pig. If I see a big chocolate cake that is made with eggs, I'll have it.” ~ Grace Slick

Three points above those two crazy bands on Number 17 we find no less than three groups celebrating all that goodness that free rock and stoner trucking entails. Three bands that came through with albums this year that a lot of you out there thought were the best of the entire year. But still, they did not get enough points to end up higher than this wild Number 16. Perhaps there was some heavy warfare on route to the country. Or perhaps the psychic power never made it completely into the mind of everyone. Well, they did make into yours! And they sure as hell made it into mine. So above We Hunt Buffalo & Ruby The Hachet we find…

Clutch – Psychic Warfare,
Freedom Hawk – Into Your Mind &
 The Sword – High Country

Number 11

“Fuck you man, you’d better sleep with one eye open!”

Number 11

Before we enter the top ten we are treated to yet another entry that takes its queues from the seventies and most importantly Black Sabbath. This time around it’s hugely due to the fact that the singer reminds us of a young Ozzy and the guitarplayer of a youthful Iommi. And where the band used to be compared a lot to Fu Manchu that resemblance has faded a bit. Gone are a lot of the groovy and lazy pieces and we are now treated to up-tempo driving arrangements and classic metal. Sure; we still get a few of those easy going sunny influences but above all: this record is one of the most genuine and beautiful ode’s to the almighty riff released this year. Venomous soloing, mean drum pounding; grand in rhythm, structure and intent. Just grab on and hold on for the ride…

Freedom Hawk – Holding On

Freedom Hawk – Holding On
Small Stone – 2011
Rock, Stoner, Doom, Metal, Classic
Waardering: *****

On their third full-sized album the American freaks from Freedom Hawk once again pull out all the Black Sabbath stops available. And where most bands that try such a feat immediately go wrong, Freedom Hawk shows on their new record Holding On that they know how to do it right. Ofcourse thanks to guitarist/singer T.R.Morton who sounds an awful lot like Ozzy. But besides him we hear a new era Iommi in the form of guitarist Matt Cave. And where the band used to be compared a lot to Fu Manchu that resemblance has faded a bit. Gone are a lot of the groovy and lazy pieces and we are now treated to up-tempo driving arrangements and classic metal. Sure; we still get a few of those easy going influences but above all Holding On is a one of the most genuine and beautiful ode’s to the almighty riff released this year. Venomous soloing, mean drum pounding; grand in rhythm, structure and intent. ‘Looking for perfection…’ Morton sings in Nomad; and that is exactly what he found…
