Bear Bones – Ridin’ Out

Bear Bones – Ridin’ Out

So yeah, I guess we’ve not been paying enough attention recently. Cause Bear Bones has apparently already been around for a year. A new project made up out of Rob Hoey on Vocals, Alex Clarke on Guitar, Peter Holland on Bass and Marco Ninni on Drums. That’s right, an outfit featuring members from Elephant Tree, Limb, Swedish Death Candy, Black Moth and Morag Tong. And for this new track Ridin’ Out, they’ve gotten Scott Black from Green Lung to go crazy on guitar. And now that they’ve gotten my attention, I will not slacken the reins…

With a definite Western or vile cowboy vibe, Ridin’ Out lumbers in on laid-back heavy blues, the groove following along in the dust cloud. Before kicking it all open, to a big windswept chorus, born out of a shadowy pulse of something doomier and dustier, a looming presence. This track seems built for the long haul, a long ride, down a dark desert with a band pushing forward through a dark and endless landscape. And now that we have Ridin’ Out, we can’t wait to hear more Bear Bones

And all you lucky folks that can make it over to Helgi’s, Hackney, London on March 30th, they will play there with Scott Black on guitar. And with Sky Valley Mistress on the bill as well!

Listen to Ridin’ Out right now and keep your eyes peeled for the album, set for release through New Heavy Sounds later this year!

PR Wire:

Bear Bones, who feature members of Elephant Tree, Limb, Swedish Death Candy, Black Moth and Morag Tong, return with “Ridin’ Out”, a brand new original track that marks the next step forward for the blues/doom outfit. Built around a driving groove and uncompromising riffs, the single captures the band at their most direct and focused to date.

“Ridin’ Out” keeps one foot in the blues while leaning fully into the weight and scale of doom. It’s a track designed for volume and for the stage — tight, deliberate and built to land hard. There’s no excess, no overthinking — just a band locked in and pushing their sound further.
The single features a guest appearance from Scott Black of Green Lung, adding another dimension to the track. That collaboration will carry over to the live setting, with Scott joining Bear Bones on stage at this year’s Masters Of The Riff at Oslo, Hackney.

“Ridin’ Out” also introduces the band’s forthcoming album, set for release through New Heavy Sounds later this year. The partnership with New Heavy Sounds (Cwfen, Blacklab, Shooting Daggers, Death Pill, Sky Valley Mistress) signals a significant moment for Bear Bones, placing them alongside some of the strongest names in the UK heavy scene and setting the stage for their most complete statement yet.
With a growing live reputation and a clear sense of direction, Bear Bones are building momentum. “Ridin’ Out” is the first taste of what’s coming next.

Upcoming live dates:

30th March, Helgi’s, Hackney, London w/ Sky Valley Mistress (tickets)

The Doom Charts for October 2023

DOOM CHARTS

OCTOBER 2023

“Don’t take away the music
It’s the only thing I’ve got
It’s my piece of the rock…”

~ Tavares

Nobody can listen to more than a fraction of all the music ever released, during their lifetime. And even the amount of music being released on a daily basis in what we have started calling the Heavy Underground is already so immense, it remains forever completely and totally awe-inspiring. It was the main reason Lucas started the Doom Charts back in 2015. To somehow try and get many of the ones that dive into that massive ocean of heaviness on a daily basis, and who write, blurb or podcast about what they discover somewhere on the internet, all grouped together. So, that together, they could possibly make some sort of list of the most important ones. Ofcourse, music is totally subjective and the Heavy Underground is of course another tribe, which inspires tribalism. It is one part of why there are so many glowing reviews about the albums we listen to. Cause even us outsiders, who finally found an every growing niche the feel at home in, do want to belong to this lovely tribe of heavy rock fiends. Or at least I do. Another, perhaps even more important reason is what we started the intro with. There is so much music! So, why bother listening to the albums you don’t love so much and why write about those, when you can profess your love for the ones you do. Well, below, those amazing girls and boys that make up the Doom Charts cabal do just that. They selected the albums they loved from the past month, sent in their lists and wrote a few words of praise… A Top 40 of amazing records, all of which deserve every bit of your attention… Go check’m out! Check’m all out!

There she is! In all it's blazing glory! Spreading like dragon fire! What a wild and wonderful month October was... Once again! All forty on this list are stunning...

Of the ones that made it, personal votes went out to: Howling Giant, Bahboon, MOOCH, Occult Hand Order, Phe, The Heavy Minds, Morag Tong, Vanishing Kids, Aiwass, wolf prayer, The Silver Linings, The Sound of Origin, Bismut, Lucid Sins, Giant Lungs, Ego Planet , DUSK, Purple Kong & Death Chant

And we already wrote something about the new: Bismut, Occult Hand Order, Phe, Morag Tong, The Silver Linings & The Sound of Origin !

But I could have voted for all of them, and should have! Will be checking my list first to see listen to the ones I voted for that unfortunately did not make it...

Before starting the rundown with Number 40: SPECK!

G’morn! We used to do this little tom-tom write up at the bottom of the weekly list. And we shall try to start that up again. A sort of glance back on the week that has passed. So, as we are still recovering from the Phe album release party from Saturday, that was a good party! We’ll try to keep it short and sweet… September had a gazillion great releases; and October is shaping up to be the same. And we hope to write a few words about a handful of them. Last week we mentioned those two Umbra albums, by Gévaudan and Kadabra. We wrote something about Spider Kitten, The Silver Linings and Morag Tong. And we were extremely happy to see Reek of STOOM write something cool about Tumanduumband and Kyle SB about 10% Reptile. If you haven’t had the chance yet, scroll down or visit the blog to read up on those. Later on today, we’ll have another one by Kyle SB going live! But for now, we’re gonna try and get a bit of sunlight and see if we can get that head straight after that wild Phe party!

Morag Tong – Grieve

Morag Tong – Grieve
Majestic Mountain Records – 2023
Doom, Sludge, Prog
Rated: ****

I played the very first Elder Scrolls computer game, called Arena. Which was amazing and a leap forward when it came to RPG games back then. I had a few moments with the follow-up Daggerfall. I know I have Skyrim somewhere, but never got around to spending time with it. This is me leading up to stating that I should be forgiven for not knowing the Morag Tong name before starting a run through of their new Grieve album out on Majestic Mountain Records. It also leading up to me kneeling to beg some more because this is their third release and we should have googled their name before. Cause we did spend some time with Through Clouded Time from 2016 and even more with Last Knell of Om from 2018. But we never knew Morag Tong was taken from the Elder Scrolls lore and more specifically the Morrowind game. And on some levels, that doesn’t matter one bit. Especially when you get swooped away by the emotive doom and atmospheric sludge that is Grieve. Progressive and psychedelic touches, three tracks that last almost as long as that final fourth track, totaling almost forty-two minutes. It’s heavy, cumbersome and large but at the same time moving towards meditative and pensive. The washing tide of sounds that starts off that final track No Sun, No Moon perhaps the penultimate example of this meditative side of them. For what better location might there be than seaside, shoreside, and waves slowly rolling in. The steady building of sound, tension and intensity. Guided by a gentle wailing guitar, before the guttural lamentation joins in that brings on a vocal dirge before switching to a calm, attractive and melodic section. Progressive, subtle and spacious, but you know that segment will of course move into a heavier, explosive in slow motion, fragment that reintroduces the howling and agonizing vocals. And then letting it all dissolve into silence, the nothingness we all Grieve about. It’s impressive, the amount of expansiveness, variety and creative energy displayed in that one twenty-minute-long final song. But you already went through those three earlier tracks, so it’s been a wonderful journey, we had a good run, no, amazing run and knowing that means you don’t have to Grieve for too long…
