Black Rainbows
Psychedelic Porn Crumpets
Baroness
Big Muff 68
Electric Machete
Band In The Pit
Desert Flag
The Guardians
Occult Hand Order
Ancient Days

Work has been hectic and much of the free time went to getting them October edition of the Doom Charts ready. But we still listened to quite some albums and enjoyed the hell out of all ten mentioned above. The sad news past week was of course that after delivering that damn amazing Man In The Arena album, the guys from The Sound Of Origin have decided to go on hiatus. Life sometimes takes a difficult turn. Thanks for the cool tunes guys! We hope you work through it all and come back to us one day.

DeWolff
The Silver Linings
Phe
Kadabra
Kambodsja
Morag Tong
Baroness
Ritual King
Robots of the Ancient World
Spider Kitten

G’morn! We used to do this little tom-tom write up at the bottom of the weekly list. And we shall try to start that up again. A sort of glance back on the week that has passed. So, as we are still recovering from the Phe album release party from Saturday, that was a good party! We’ll try to keep it short and sweet… September had a gazillion great releases; and October is shaping up to be the same. And we hope to write a few words about a handful of them. Last week we mentioned those two Umbra albums, by Gévaudan and Kadabra. We wrote something about Spider Kitten, The Silver Linings and Morag Tong. And we were extremely happy to see Reek of STOOM write something cool about Tumanduumband and Kyle SB about 10% Reptile. If you haven’t had the chance yet, scroll down or visit the blog to read up on those. Later on today, we’ll have another one by Kyle SB going live! But for now, we’re gonna try and get a bit of sunlight and see if we can get that head straight after that wild Phe party!

Baroness – Stone

Baroness – Stone
Abraxan Hymns – 2023
Rock, Metal, Stoner, Prog, Alternative, Sludge
Rated: *****

Every Baroness fan will immediately know this album is here to break away from what has come before. The first album with the exact same line-up as the one that came before. And the album title is a dead give away of course. Stone. No more colors. They are here to cast the first stone, to cause ripples and to show all of us that Baroness is back, different, the same and absolutely smashing. Where opener Embers might still give off a momentary breath of air and a glance back at the album that came before, the band jumps on top of you with the second track Last Word. Pummeling and relentless, the chugging, the building, the climbing and those two vocal lines expertly weaving around each other. Tight, snappy and incredibly direct, the riffs tumble over one another to exhume sheer power and thrust. Just listen to Beneath The Rose, where you can hear grand beard John Dyer Baizley’s declamation over powerful thrashy metal and hear his emotive howling whenever the melody is allowed to take over. Imposing and grandiose are very limited words listening to that track. Much of the album feels like a seismic shift, and earthquake rocking, metallic shocking of the senses. As if the band wanted to recall that prog and sludge from before, while moving towards a highly formidable metal future. And then there are those momentary ballsy hardrock influences and something that is surely meant for the biggest of stages or darkest of pits. But you also have The Dirge, cutting that ominous and evil sounding Choir off and the album in two, with its pastoral Americana folk, a moment of respite in the assault perhaps, but not one that will put your mind at ease. Plus, Anodyne follows and cuts through the air and your thoughts like a machine, the siren making sure you will be on full alert. Which is a good thing, cause Stone deserves every bit of your attention. They did not throw perfect piece of rock into the pond for nothing. Baroness is back, and as good as they ever were!

Valkyrie – Fear

Valkyrie – Fear
Relapse Records – 2020
Rock, Hard, Metal, Proto, Prog
Rated: ****

I only briefly listened to the new Valkyrie album Fear before the July Doom Charts rolled around. The honorable John Gist then stated that the Number One spot was well deserved and the only possible one for this month; and that sealed the deal. We had to dive deep into the sound of the new Valkyrie. Hugo Hulleman of course already did the deed for the Doom Charts mentioning the Baroness link, the mix of proto-metal, stoner and classic rock and paying homage to their riffage. So, we continue on and begin to hear all of those comparisons made. The Thin Lizzy, the Blue Oyster Cult, the Pentagram, the Uncle Acid and of course the Sabbath love. But then we start hearing those more eighties influences, some Killing Joke or post gothic edge; giving an eerie feeling of loss during the chorus and then going all seventies hardrock afterwards, pulling on the emotional thread. Cause there is depth here. Melancholy and sadness taking center stage for the most part. Offset by wild guitar playing, absolutely stunning bass and riveting drum-work. We had little time to listen before the July Doom Charts rolled around; it then took some time to grab hold; but now it just keeps on spinning!

Baroness – Gold & Grey

Baroness – Gold & Grey
Spinefarm/Abraxan Hymns – 2019
Rock
Rated: ***

We continue along the kaleidoscopic Baroness journey that begun so many years ago with that magical Red album. Apparently the new Gold & Grey album was supposed to be called Orange, but he wasn’t feeling that color. And yes, Gold & Grey does alliterate nicely, so I guess we can agree with the decision. And shit, we have no say in that matter anyway… We were already jotting down these few lines about the new Baroness record when Madman Tony Maim sent in his screed about Gold & Grey and we of course stopped writing immediately, cause why do another mention about the same album. There is so much other great music out there and so little time. But even though I agree with his rant, I missed something. Something I felt needed to be said. Gold & Grey feels like a continuation from Yellow & Green. Where the experimental side was perhaps bigger but the amount of different approaches to the tracks smaller. Influences are still too many to name and the dynamics are even grander. We even get an acoustic treatment and female vocals in the form of new guitarist Gina Gleason. And the feeling we are listening to one big work of art is even more present due to all the bridges and themes connection the songs. But it still could not grab me initially, it took some time, and the reason behind that fact, I fear, was the way the mix and production feels. And that feeling has not left me, even though the album has become a favorite, a record one can spin at all kinds of different moments, there is something amiss with the mix. The tracks and compositions have this fragile edge to it, while the mix goes through the ceiling in loudness and fullness, leaving no room for the instruments to move or the compositions to breathe. It is a strange feeling to listen to an album and wanting to love it so much but feel like it is a lot of work to do so. I would give a lot for a new version of this record, but shit, we have no say in that matter…

Baroness – Gold & Grey

Baroness – Gold & Grey
Abraxan Hymns – 2019
Rock, Metal, Prog Stoner
Rated: ****

Once upon a time in the magical Kingdom of Heavy, there was a band called Baroness. After some EPs, the band released the “Blue” and “Red” albums and all the subjects of the kingdom celebrated with much joy and drinks and drugs because the two albums were declared masterpieces and the band were the best in the world. All was good in the Kingdom of Heavy. Then the band released “Yellow & Green” and “Purple” and a lot of the subjects cursed the band because these new albums were not the same as “Red” and “Blue” and in the Kingdom of Heavy the subjects became sad and cursed Baroness for changing and not staying the same for years and years. So all the subjects waited to see what the new album “Gold & Grey” would sound like. And up in the Dark Tower, the brave reviewers who listen to piles and piles of shit so you don’t have to, shouted down to the waiting subjects and declared “Some of you saps will hate it, some will love it. It is like none of the albums mentioned but a glorious mixture of all of them, showcasing the song writing skills of a band secure in their own abilities, still heavy, still displaying light and shade and still awesome”

How did the subjects of Kingdom of Heavy react to this news? Who gives a shit!

Number 18

Number 18

Komatsu charged at us from Number 19 and now we jump quite a few points to find another band that has making the list from day one. Yes yes, Numero 13 back in 2009. And yes yes yes, an album released in December 2015 made the list! So, in short, these guys wowed the crowd when they were Red and Blue, left loads of fans divided when they were Yellow and Green, but seem to have exacted revenge on those of us that were unsure the band still had it when they changed color once again. Twin guitars, heavy sludge riffs and a distorted breeze that just blows your mind back. There is nothing on this album that seems out of place. What color will they shift to next? We will see, but for now let's just enjoy this Purple monument! Yes yes yes yes, we are ofcourse talking about…

Baroness – Purple

Baroness – Yellow & Green

Baroness – Yellow & Green
Relapse records – 2012
Rock, Alternative, Stoner, Metal
Rated: ****

On our voyage down south we were treated less to the ancient roars and cavemen riffs we had been expecting of the new Baroness record Yellow & Green. Instead of the colorful Neanderthal musical drawings we had been expecting we were treated to wonderful kaleidoscopic and airy compositions that fit perfectly with the traversing landscape. With every record the guys become ever more accessible to a much wider audience; and where genre companions Mastodon largely tries to do the same thing; Baroness never wavers, does it with grace and succeeds. Solid tight rock songs on the first part called Yellow with instantly recognizable choruses. And thanks to the gripping guitar work we taste some true melodic riffs and solo’s without it ever becoming tedious. On the second part Green we traverse with the guys through the psychedelic landscape. Less thrilling perhaps but with ever so often a true musical pearl or a compelling new level in their music. Real song songs from the men with beards!

Numero 13

Numero 13

Two years ago these guys came up with a spectacular album and named it after the color of blood. To follow up this hugely successful album they made an even better one and called it after the color of water. Savannah rockers sporting heavy riffs, atmospheric guitars and dueling slingers! The songs are so strong, diverse and with the ethereal voices switching between aggression and communion; there is never a dull moment. Sludge metal with a progressive and symphonic twist. True passioned music for the true freaks!
