In preparation for the interview with Sean McVay of King Buffalo we dove deep into all the album King Buffalo delivered and turned even into a bigger Buffalo nut than before. This might now happen with The Cult as well… That interview is tomorrow and the new album Under The Midnight Sun is a continuation of the last two, with more marriages with those very first albums… One more hectic week ahead of us, we've got a few updates lying in await; but we hope to do some more HiVe work soon! Check'm out! Check'm all out!

Stoner HiVe’s Top 5 artists listened to last week…

Top 5 artists listened to last week…

Festival season is upon us. Wild times and a whole lot of great music! Next up is Graspop; which starts this Thursday. With big names like Guns ‘N Roses, Iron Maiden, Volbeat and Megadeth. But also, Baroness, Dool, Ghost, Kadavar, Planet of Zeus, Vintage Caravan and a whole lot of metal from every genre. Yihaw!  But we still found some time to listen to great stuff at home as well! Like Black Orchid Empire and their Yugen album. Smashing stuff! Or Lowen and their A Crypt In The Stars release. Magical from front to back! Both absolutely excellent and both of which we mentioned earlier on the HiVe. And then there was the new Jollymon album Void Walker, that suddenly appeared on the radar! Yes, Jollymon releases new stuff after eighteen years! A perfect combination of stoner metal and space rock. Less grungy than their earlier work this is one hell of a release. One that ticks all my personal boxes and I am pretty sure it shall tick everyone’s boxes! So, get on board the Jollymon spaceship and ride the endless groove through the void! The latest Arctic Monkeys is still on rotation and we wonder how it will translate on the Werchter stage where we will catch’m in a few weeks’ time. And because of the sad news of Arthur van Berkel’s passing, we played Orange Sunshine for two days straight. Remembering all the times we watched him do his magic on stage. We hope he is swirling around in psychedelic goodness and peace wherever he might be. And we implore you, if you haven’t already, to put on that Orange Sunshine magic and swirl around with him. And feel the love for his comrades from the band, all his friends and family! So, ride those waves! Ride them all!

Are you ready for a sexy, Rat Pack-ish, Nick Cave infused, Bowie-esque record long adventure? Go book a trip to the Tranquility Base Hotel + Casino and hear one of the absolute best lyricists of our times at work again. The Arctic Monkeys have struck again and once again highly different then what they did before. Gozu dropped their Equilibrium album via Metal Blade Records and it’s awesomely fuzzy and crushingly groovy once again! The Mirror album by Canadian duo Sierra delivers some amazing psychedelic seventies prog, old school metal and more. It’s out on Retro Futurist Records and deserves all of our attention. Green Desert Water releases their Solar Plexus album via Small Stone and it shall soar high and mighty for the next months. For surely, everyone checking this one out will fall in love with their raw stoner edge, their psychedelic take on hardrock and their pure devotion to everything proto and seventies. It’s fuzzy at every corner and grabs you at every turn! The White Witch EP by Frayle is different, definitely different. Intense and eerie, hypnotic and grungy, heavy, low and witchy! Female fronted doom that is bewitching! You need to check it out! Shit, you need to check them all out! All of ‘em!

Number 4

Number 4

“It has a big round raisin toffee fruitiness and the a dark amber color. There’s not a great deal to smell in this beer save for a slight woody toffee which is a shame. And there’s woodiness in the flavor too, it’s a brown resinous timber and it backs up the fruitiness very well. The hops are crisp and crunchy, sharp with brambles and they lead to a decent dry finish.”

We climb yet again only one point after enjoying the magical Abra Kadavar and find ourselves at Number 4. It is one of those albums that received as much flak from the early fans as it received praise from the later ones. And the other way around. For it moved every further away from the obscure, weird, rough and heavy beginnings towards something big, colorful and poppy. There is still that air of strange and dry heat surrounding it and there’s still enough of that gritty desert atmosphere permeating the songs. But not everyone has declared their love for this album; but the ones that conjured this one up will not care. For apparently dying a couple of hours, fighting with your brothers from the early days and fathering a couple of children changes you. And as time passes we all change. You can set your watch to that…

Queens Of The Stone Age - Why'd You Only Call Me When You're High

Queens Of The Stone Age - Why'd You Only Call Me When You're High

Well, it's only logical the boys are going to cover each other's songs. It might not be the best version yet. But I'm sure soon they will be playing it damn freakin beautifully...
