Warpstormer – Here Comes Hell

Warpstormer – Here Comes Hell
Self released – 2022
Rock, Metal, Sludge, Doom, Stoner
Rated: ****

Storming the gates of hell with blazing energy is the new three-piece outfit from London, UK called Warpstormer. Their self-released four track debut opens with the righteous heavy metal title track Here Comes Hell and immediately lets you know what you are in for. Much more metal, much more heavy metal, some sludge and even some thrash and hardcore elements in comparison to Green Lung and Oak. What? Why do you mention Green Lung and Oak, you ask? Well, the members from Warpstormer used to reside in the now defunct Oak and they borrowed Scott Black from Green Lung to get this little dark diamond out! Four tracks that show their colors easy; wave their metal flag with a snarl and dig into so much grit, the war-ridden skies shall be torn asunder. Closing effort Reap What You’ve Sown (Devourer) slows more down to doom and might resonate easier with most of the freaks in the HiVe… It’s a grand, unsettling finale that propels Here Comes Hell to a higher plain. Here Comes Hell! A convincing heavy metal calling card!

The Doom Chart For May 2018

 Doom Chart
” La mota vienen en primer cajona. La coca y la rapidez vienen en segundo. La heroina en el debajo. Siempre hay que separa las drogas.”
~Mouth

And here we are again. At the beginning of June with a quick glance over our shoulder towards that wonderful month of May. A month that saw the release of so many great albums, that after the voting had stopped, the total tally exceeded the 260 mark. Amazing. And we only feature the 25 that received the most amount of votes. Which also means that there are those albums that only barely missed it. CHRCH and their LIGHT WILL CONSUME US ALL release for instance, OAK with their III album and EL ROJO with their 16 INCHES RADIAL record. It’s heavy not featuring them, but the list is what it is. A swift scan of everything we loved and will continue to love! Cause, that is ofcourse,  what consoles us all. It isn’t over and we can continue to listen to all those 260 albums for the rest of our lives!

~ Joop Konraad (Stoner HiVe)

Oak – III

Oak – III
Self released – 2018
Rock, Stoner, Desert, Sludge
Rated: ****

You can just stop reading now and scroll a bit lower to click on the Bandcamp link cause they fellas from Oak are offering their third EP III up for free! That’s right! Those London freaks that we know from two earlier EP’s that gave us a sapling that was growing and becoming a huge stalwart tree. And it has! II was already a huge leap forward in comparison to I, but III is dwarfing them both! The four of Oak have managed to make a great stoner release that is heavy with atmosphere and intense in its build-ups and breakdowns. Still windswept, dusty and fuzzy, the groove is ever prevalent and sweeps you along a massive current of majestic riffs and thundering drums! It’s so heavy at times, it feels like they are almost losing themselves to the sludge, but then they straightened their backs and swerve back into the stoner and desert highway. I love that intro, the drum build-up, I love the intermission Air, grabbing the right tone and setting the right mood. Before we move back into wilder territories with Nothing Without You. Which is as emotional as it sounds. Rough and gritty changes into emotive and colorful, and back again. And it’s all there, majestic guitar and bass work, vocals that do something to ya and truly glorious drumming. O’ and may I state that I absolute love the artwork and its consistency! Done by Unexpected Specter it fits wonderfully with the music and the continuation of the three EP’s! Love it! Grab it! Buy it! Send it as a gift to your friends! They will love it too!

Oak – II

Oak – II
Self released – 2016
Rock, Hard, Stoner, Desert
Rated: ****

About seven months ago we were treated to the debut four-track by London quartet Oak. A fine ride that was. Full of grit, testosterone and wild ideas. That EP definitely hinted at a tree in its infancy. One that needed to grow and bear fruit before we would truly be able to appreciate it in all its glory. Well, the brethren have now released a new four-track and it is, without a doubt, a grander one that their debut. On the EP titled II, the desert still shines through on occasion, but only so it could deliver the heat and the vistas on tracks like Against The Rain and A Bridge Too Far. For the opening and closing part they move into growling biker and stoner, almost well, sludgy territory. Or perhaps not, cause opener Mirage definitely still shimmers like that grand band from the desert that started it all. And closer Smoke feels like an entirely different bookend, a slower heavy groove that lumbers through a landscape filled with intense guitar work and fuzzy riffs. Picking a favorite or a winner is impossible, all four tracks seem to be a different beast onto itself. An animal lying in wait, ready to pounce on all of you unsuspecting music fiends out there. Heavy is as heavy does and Oak does everything exactly right!
