Winter is coming! Days are getting shorter and therefore seem to rush by even faster. Cause it is Monday already and again! But hey, that also means Friday is only a few days away. Did you manage to catch the Doom Charts Freebie bonanza last Friday? Hope you managed to grab a code or two… Last week we had the honor of premiering the video for the Temptation’s Wings track AquaTusk and the full Stormforged EP was released a day later. Which you can read about here. We also jotted down some words about Appalooza, Birds of Nazca and Spin The Skull. Go check’m out! Check’m all out..

Ps. We are refraining from making a Spotify Playlist. Unless you reckon we should make one anyway?

Birds of Nazca – Pangaea

Birds of Nazca – Pangaea
Self-released – 2025
Instrumental, Rock, Stoner, Desert, Doom, Metal
Rated: *****

Long ago, before the oceans spread, a single land where all life tread... Pangaea! Long time supporter! And high on my list of bands I still desperately need to see live! For in a realm where thunderous riffs clash with swirling mystic energies, there are only a few sonic sorcerers that have mastered the elemental forces like Birds of Nazca. With their third tome, Pangaea, releasing October 3rd, this French instrumental duo carves their name into the stone of legend, conjuring a sound both ancient and cosmic, earthy and otherworldly. A mighty fusion of molten rock and shimmering psychedelia! Instrumental music, like spell craft, demands precision and power. Without a guiding voice, many wander aimlessly through the void, but not these two. From their earliest incantations, Birds of Nazca have wielded their instruments like enchanted relics, summoning storms of sound that transport listeners across unseen realms. Pangaea is their most potent spell yet: a sprawling journey through tectonic landscapes, and beautiful vista’s, dripping with symbolism and raw power. Where others might falter under such weight, Birds of Nazca ascend, high above the clouds of mediocrity, into celestial heights where only the most daring dare tread. Enter their world, and you’ll find yourself swept away in an odyssey of earth-shaking might and transcendent vision.

Transcendental, for where many duo’s linger in the shadows of the lower regions, rarely wandering beyond the eighth realm except for fleeting bursts of melody. Guillaume, remembers that the guitar’s voice can shimmer with bright, ringing tones. Meanwhile, Romuald paints with every corner of his drum kit, crafting rhythms that dance and intrigue, drawing listeners into the world they’ve created both rich and restless. Come the final track Pangaea and the golden hush of dawn, the forest stirring as delicate chirps dance through the air, mingling with the soft rattles of restless wings and the distant whistle of unseen songbirds weaving melodies into the morning light, you will have tasted the waters and the salt of your eyes. And feel blessed to have been a part of this adventure and can be once more. And more. For even though slowly, silently, the plates did glide, tearing apart what time couldn’t hide. But in the echoes of the earth’s deep roar, Pangaea lives forevermore….

Is it Monday already? Yikes! Well, we managed to do a review or two and were absolutely honored to premiere two smashing singles! Did you check out that stonerrock anthem by Black Charger? Or the wicked and wild new Malkasian track? If not, you can still do so and be ready for those full albums to drop! And we might just have another premiere coming later this week! We also mentioned the Afghan Haze scorcher and all that sexy swagger delivered by Supernaughty. We hope to do a bit more this week… And we are uncertain if we should continue with the Spotify playlist? We know, its not a very decent company and the people behind it are doing worse things with their investments on a daily basis. We just always used it solely to promote those albums we love and listened to. But hey, maybe we should switch to another possibility? Any suggestions?!

Birds of Nazca – Pangea

Birds of Nazca – Pangea

It’s a pre-order, fundraiser and a way to get the not just the word out about the new album to arrive in October. But also to get you soaring high on the new video and single Gang Rinpoché! We’re talking about Birds of Nazca and they are in the process of finalizing their new album Pangea! It’s instrumental brilliance is apparent from that opening lift off to the powering middle storm and the night sky that shines bright with all the stars. Birds of Nazca is a two piece from Nantes, France and know how to walk that tight rope between stoner rock, heavy psych and doom in perfect fashion!

We loved their first album from 2020 and white bandshirt (grin) and the four track Héliolite from 2023 was on repeat for months. We can’t wait to hear Pangea and hope more will help out getting the Birds of Nazca to soar high across the globe…

And have those bandshirts once again in white...

Birds of Nazca - Héliolite

Birds of Nazca - Héliolite
Self released – 2023
Rock, Instrumental, Psych, Stoner, Doom
Rated: ****

It was one of the albums that went with me on that little holiday in Scotland. And it was one of the albums that went on repeat during and after the trip, causing me to take yet another trip. For the  instrumental heavy goodness straight out of Nantes, France can make you see all sorts of visions. It’s the brand new Birds of Nazca EP called Héliolite... And still can't get enough of it! So, only logical that we could not control ourselves and had to write that little blurb for the May Doom Charts. From Nantes, France comes instrumental duo Birds of Nazca. And on their newest release Héliolite they once again give us that delicious heavy fuzz, heavy psych, heavy stoner and high energy doom! This time around the sound has grown richer, thicker, and fit for a narrative about deep diving into a mine for emeralds and diamonds. Cause with restraint and precision, the short intro and three tracks shine and glisten like that dark rock pressurized for ages and ages until it shatters into millions of precious drum fills and riffs! Three tracks that give you everything you need. And for the Doom Charts Mixtape I suggested using the Inti Raymi track, but we perhaps should have suggested closing track Gugcumatz. The track named after the Mayan, feathered serpent god, that created the world, and is the carrier of the sun across the sky, starts of with these highly atmospheric sounds, which suggest movement and something bubbling underground at the same time. That sundried, shimmering hot, yet full of life guitar tone than sets everything properly in gliding motion. Bone dry almost speaker boxing drums turn it into a more totem punching rock song, before stonerrock bordering on sludge reminiscent riffs take you into a different subterranean section. And that windswept middle section, reminding you of how it started and bringing it full circle before they minutely build it up again towards that end push. Where the feathered serpent gets to bite its tail one last time…  (And did we mention yet that they sell white band shirts!?)

We had our little goddaughter for the weekend, which meant very limited time to go through all those May Doom Charts albums. But we shall continue that run down as of today. And when Queens of The Stone Age drop an album, you of course sit up and pay attention. But I sat up ever straighter hearing that new EP by Phe. Five tracks leagues ahead of what they did with the first EP and their album Glooming Dawn. And we are honored to let you guys know, we will be premiering their first single Saviour on Wednesday!! Can’t wait for everyone to hear it!

The Doom Charts for May 2023

Doom Charts

“Today I consider myself the luckiest man on the face of the earth.”

~ Lou Gehrig

Here we are, on the First Friday of the new Month looking back at yet another Month filled with amazing releases. A month that might have felt a bit quiet on the Doom Charts front, and that is because yours truly left on a holiday to Scotland for three weeks of hiking and completely off grid stuff and had limited time to arrange things properly before he left. This will not happen again. My apologies. Returning to the Heavy Underground always feels like a warm embrace though, especially when you see so many amazing albums all waiting to be spun. And even more so when some of the Contributors immediately contact you raving about this or that album. Some frantically so, because his blurb was received a fraction after the deadline. Which means it will be used for the Peroration post in two weeks. He stated: “Five tracks of leviathan, tectonic soundscapes coupled with the harmonies of twin vocalists… EPIC is an understatement: The Very ECHT of Doom: Panoramic, Epic and Majestic every which way you turn!” and ends that blurb with: ” … have a Unique vibe, Appealing sound, Awesome Concept and may well have just catapulted Themselves into the Echelons! Unmissable!” So, you best believe we were listening to that album immediately! And then to think there were more Contributors with other favorite albums that demanded to be heard as soon as possible as well. Amazing! In fact, 323 albums received votes this month. How lucky are we that we have this abundance of great music to listen to and love? Cause that’s a lot of love for all that Heavy Rock once again. And some of that love is now featured below… Go check’m out! Check’m all out!

There she booms! The May 2023 Doom Charts containing, all that's heavy, psychedelic, stoner and dooms! A mighty fine list once again!

And due to that little holiday, I will need to check a whole lot of them this time around... Personal votes of the ones that made it went out to Dozer, Ruff Majik, GOZU, Apex Ten, The Machine, Birds of Nazca

Started my run down of all forty yesterday with Sacri Suoni, Psychic Mass, Takezo and Ruff Majik... Continuing on now with Rusty Bonez and their Brainworm release and make my way to Number 1 !! Stil feeling all sorts of lucky!!

Welcome to Doom Charts, representing some of the finest bloggers, journalists, radio, podcasters and reviewers from the heavy underground around the globe.  Each month, our critics submit their picks for the best new doom, sludge, metal, stoner, psychedelic and heavy rock albums.  The results are compiled and tabulated into the chart below.  This is a one-stop shop for the best new albums in the world…

Stoner HiVe’s Quick Fire Friday

Stoner HiVe’s Quick Fire Friday

Friday it is! Time for Quick Fire Friday! This time around we’re going all out and mentioning even more releases, ep’s and singles from 2020. Cause it is the final Friday of January! The final Quick Fire Friday in which we will entirely glance back towards that doomed year of 2020. After this we shall look forward, cause the 2021 releases are already piling up in the war room and inbox. So here it is, the  final Quick Fire Friday of January! And we know, we know, the albums and bands deserve more than the few words we will jot down here. More attention and more of our time! But there is so much out there and we just simply cannot ever do it all justice. So here it is. The Stoner HiVe Quick Fire Friday! And its burns hot like molten lava!

The Magic Bus – To Spiti tu Asteriona (The House of Asterion)

The Greek fourpiece The Magic Bus has been touring the country since 2017 and is about to release their debut album To Kastro (The Castle). And to give us all a taste they released a first single named Taksidi Entos (Inner Journey) in November and To Spiti tu Asteriona (The House of Asterion) in December 2020. With omniscient presence Valantis Dafkos in the line-up you never know what direction it might go. The man, also present in acts like Peculiar Three and Redeye Caravan, seems to be able to do it all. With Greek vocals the track will undoubtedly give off a warm air and with its grandiose gestures it will tell you exciting stories of faraway lands; even if you don’t speak Greek…

F29 – F29

Atomic Zombie Records has been releasing a steady stream of grimy weirdness since they started back in 2015. The man behind it is Derek Neibarger and behind most of the releases on his label as well. And by sheer coincidence he is also the guy behind the one man project F29. Filthy, grungy, dank and dark, the debut eight track release is not for the faint hearted. It will slowly grind your soul to dust and incinerate your brain. And there are those moments in the week when we can all use some destruction!

Morpholith – Null Dimensions

The awesome Ozium Records is releasing the mighty two track Null Dimensions by Icelandic quintet Morpholith on vinyl. Two tracks filled with atmospheric, grimy, sludgy doom and proggy metal with an almost gothic feel. And with more amplifiers than bandmembers you know the Reykjavik outfit is loud and heavy. Very loud! And very heavy! O’ and if you have a cassette fetish visit Sludgelord Records for the Morpholith release!

Switchblade Jesus – Death Hymns

We continue the trek to the all heavy and all noisy landscape with Death Hymns by three-piece Switchblade Jesus. Thrashy, speedy and sludgy, the seven tracks run you over in not even thirty  minutes and leave you breathless and overwhelmed. Indeed, Switchblade Jesus almost clubbers you to death like some caveman crazy! No drawings of silly mammoths or bison; no, it will be of evil Behemoths!

Hydra – Live Session

We love Hydra and we love their From Light To The Abyss record released by Piranha Music back in August 2020. And due to the pandemic and all their shows being cancelled, they followed that up with a Live Session playing those tracks live and one new one called The Unholy Ceremony. Perfectly captured, we look around to see if there’s a line at the bar and how many coins we have left. And only then realize once again we are listening to this great stoner doom band from Poland in our war room. Loving it! And will be on heavy rotation over here!

Dr. Elephant’s Revolution – On Our Own

The first track on the new album On Our Own by two piece Dr. Elephant’s Revolution will not immediately pull you in. The slow atmospheric scene setter is by no means exemplary for the rest of the alternative, groove metal extravaganza we get afterwards. Canary In A Coal Mine is already incredibly addictive; and then the two march on with feverous energy. Stoner influences and all kinds of speedy crossover elements make this one hell of an entertaining adventure! All aboard!

Birds of Nazca – Birds of Nazca

Perhaps the best release we mention on this Quick Fire Friday session is the instrumental duo Birds of Nazca. Their self-titled eight track release nestles perfectly between all those heavy genres we all love so dearly. Yes, this is heavy fuzz, heavy psych, heavy stoner and high energy doom! Or as they like to call it themselves: doom ‘n roll! Once heard you will keep returning to this album and soar with it; high and mighty over the wide desert landscape!

The Meffs – Get Real

Well, lets Get Real for a second! Lets watch the video and learn all about life and more importantly The Meffs! A noisy Essex political punk duo that released their debut full-sized self-titled album in April of 2020. Well, we’re just in time to pay attention to this short and sweet punk release before their new single ‘You’ll See’ hits us smack dab between they eyes. And hey, their album in their own words: “Short enough that if you don't like it, it'll be over quickly. Long enough to get stuck in your nut.” Yowzah!

Shit The Cow – Helvetespolkan

We’re still coming to grips with the awesome polka from hell as produced by Shit The Cow. Helvetespolkan is once again a gritty, intense and ramshackle stoner garage affair. Punky and primal, bluesy polka straight from purgatory. You’d better catch them quickly; cause they’ve got noise to deliver!
