European premiere

We Kill Cowboys - Earth Demon

In conjunction with the almighty Doomed and Stoned over on the other side of the Atlantic, we’re honored to bring you the video premiere for the new We Kill Cowboys video for Earth Demon. Recorded live in the studio, the Cape Town based, four-piece, psychedelic punk rock band, ask no quarters, take no prisoners and ride that groove train all the way down to kick-ass-ville! Check it out below…

We Kill Cowboys is raw energy. We Kill Cowboys is having a good time. We Kill Cowboys is about flipping the bird to conformity while sipping on some ice-cold Lemonade...
We Kill Cowboys is a Cape Town based, four-piece, psychedelic punk rock band, the brainchild of tattoo artist and singer-songwriter, Alex Muller.

The initial project was born out of the 3-month lockdown of 2020 when Alex had the time to rediscover her musical roots and put together a collection of songs for her first solo EP, entitled Let it Burn. The EP was recorded by long-time friend and fellow musician (and legend in the Cape Town underground scene) Jon Shaban at Atomic studio CT (formerly STFD Studio). A record deal with STFD and Just Music swiftly followed and, with lockdown restrictions easing, thoughts soon turned to turning the EP into a live prospect.

While the EP had reflected the more melancholic isolation of the lockdown experience – sparse arrangements, built around acoustic guitar and Alex’s plaintive voice, a gut feeling was compelling her to seek a bigger, more electric sound. Approaches were made to good friends from years gone by in the scene and soon enough, the group gathered in the live room at the label office to spin some shapes. Things exploded from there with the band drawing on their varied influences, spanning Metal, Punk, Rock n Roll, Country, Western Classical, Indian Raga, Folk, Blues, and a host of other genres. The result was the recently released DIRTY BUSINESS EP.

With the heavier direction the band are heading in with their new material the decision was made to move to Mongrel Records, the rock and metal imprint owned by Just Music. Today’s sees the release of the video for their live in studio performance of new track Earth Demon which will form part of the upcoming studio release set to drop later this year.

Lyrically, Alex delivers a raw, uncompromising, and anti-establishment polemic, drawing directly from her lived experiences in the music scene and the world at large.

“Earth Demon, quite simply, is about narcissism. It’s about being in a relationship with a narcissist, being raised by a narcissistic parent and then it’s also a metaphor for society. It’s when the veil is lifted and you’re able to take a step back and see the truth of the situation, how toxic it is and realise it for what it is…We call them Earth Demons. And this song was written for them all.” – Alex Muller

Fostermother – Hedonist

Fostermother – Hedonist

It premiered on Doomed & Stoned about a week or perhaps two ago and then quickly became a repeat listen on Youtube for us. It’s the new single Hedonist by Fostermother! The first to arrive from their new album Ocean to be released February 18th on Ripple Music. Gritty doom and sludge; and promises an even darker, harsher and drowning album than their self-titled from early 2020. It’s slow and heavy and that’s exactly what we want. Or as the Sun of Grey guys said in the comments on Youtube: “This is badass!!!” And that, it surely is!

Pale Keeper – Pale Keeper

Pale Keeper – Pale Keeper
Self-released – 2021
Doom, Stoner
Rated: ****

Russia's Doom scene is a sprawling, myriad array of diverse bands, styles, regional flavours and accents (as recently showcased by the Doomed & Stoned in Russia compilation) and Moscow Doom trio Pale Keeper turn back the clock and wrench us back to the Old School proto-Doom of yore. Hefty doses of Sabbathian riffage tinder-spark the opener, "Tower Lord": A straight-up, no-messing up-tempo Blues bruiser with a real vintage guitar tone chugging relentlessly. "Sylvian", however, changes the mood entirely: Low-key, atmospherics and a funereal beat usher in a simple, repetitive refrain that serves as an intro to "Getting High" - a slow, menacing Iommian riff and slow bluesy solo turns into another mid-tempo Doomer - sharp, clear vocals cutting swathes through the grime and directing its power, finishing up with a fierce solo from Davydov on the kill-strings. "Emerald Grave" continues the slow, agonized Doom tempo, again with huge walls of Riff and THAT guitar tone commanding attention, weaving a melodic, melancholic journey into your mind. The aptly-titled "Placid" brings a blessed, calming finale to a work of great power and attention to sound. Pale Keeper have announced themselves on the Underground scene in great style!

Howls From The Hollow is turning into a tsunami of wails…

Howls From The Hollow

is turning into a tsunami of wails…

Our very own Reek of STOOM went on to write for Doomed & Stoned and the Doom Charts as well before turning his own august taste into a weekly playlist called Howls From The Hollow. He has now after joining the HiVe some two years ago turned his shrieks, his screams and his cries into even more Howling. Cause as of yesterday Howls From The Hollow also has a wixsite that provides you will all the necessary link and more importantly; will feature all kinds of crazy writing by Reek. First up is a review of the new Ripple Music released Starified album Fat Hits! He wrote about their earlier release Feathers back when he had only joined the HiVe for a few months. Fat Hits is bigger, bolder and grandiose! Or as Reek says: “Then comes the first single release, "Don Loco", a story of descent into madness replete with Vadim's powerful vocal delivery captures Starified's sound implicitly: Heavy, groovy and catchy.” Go visit the Hollow, read up on Starified and get lost in its echo chamber of heaviness!

Stoner HiVe’s
Top 10 Most Listened To Albums Last Week…

As you might have noticed... Due to work we took on during the pandemic, listening time and HiVe time has unfortunately been very limited. Hence, we’ll keep posting the Top 10 of last week. Because once again we listened to a lot of different albums, but had limited time to really dive into them.  We also listened to some more podcasts than usual. Like the Doomed & Stoned one… Season 6, Episode 9 featuring Todd Severin from Ripple Music, John Gist of Vegas Rock Revolution and ofcourse Billy Goate himself. And you know our very own Reek of STOOM has been going podcast crazy on his own Podomatic site! Go check it out… And check out all them bands above! Yes! All of it and all of them!

Lacertilia – Calling The Quarters

Lacertilia – Calling The Quarters
Proper Tidy Records – 2020
Rock, Stoner, Doom, Psych
Rated: ****

And ofcourse this Welsh band featured prominently on the Doomed & Stoned in Wales compilation curated by the wicked Reek of STOOM for Billy Goate’s Doomed & Stoned site. And ofcourse we loved their Crashing Into The Future release of 2015 and full-sized We're Already Inside Your Mind from 2016. But we have to admit, we never got around to mentioning them back then! And we are very very sorry! Now we try to remedy that horrible failure by mentioning the new Calling The Quarters by the awesome Lacertilia! The album arrived about a week ago and has been spinning ever since. Eight tracks of majestic stoner metal grooves and psychedelic doom explorations. It has this underlying rumbling atmosphere; a punk attitude and primal aggression which they let loose upon you with grandiose guitarwork and expansive gestures. It’s a gigantic sound and a truly feral experience that won’t let up till that intro part of the Further, the third track. On which they show that these five Crazy Welshmen have more cards up their sleeve. Going from big to huge, bringing in the Shamanistic elements and to something thick, dense and even more powerful. Hats off to Lacertilia for this amazing new release!

Doomed & Stoned in Wales

From the Land of Song emerges yet another impressive Doomed & Stoned compilation, curated by the Reek of Stoom in his far-reaching efforts to hear all that is heavy. Doomed & Stoned in Wales presents a diverse range of music as rich as the land's storied history, traveling from hard-hitting stoner and psych to full throttle punk and sludge, only to be slowly crushed in the end by low and slow doom. Ironbird takes a proggy spin on stoner and Lacertilia brings a bassy desert groove, before the unpredictable psych of one-man band Caravan Obscura and oddballs Moon Goose turn everything on its head. Two acts especially enjoyable and unexpected are another one-man outfit, Fuzzasaurus, whose Breeders-like bass is catchy beyond reason, and Dead Shed Jokers with their  Western bluesy stylings. Wales brings the wild, however, with Tides of Sulfur's punishing high-speed sludge assault, and shows off its doom credentials with the bottomless low end of Kitten Spider and LUNG's nodding Sleep worship. Billy Goat's Doomed & Stoned has gifted us yet another goodie bag of heavy to dive into, showing Wales to be a well of underground music bursting with talent and style.

Doomed & Stoned in Hellas

Greece has got the goods!

From deep within the fabled gloom of his hollows, the venerable Reek of Stoom has crafted yet another Doomed & Stoned journey through lands rich in heavy talent. Hellenic music has always been a stalwart of the heavy underground, and in the latest D&S compilation the truly immense depth and breadth of its scene is brought to light. Kicking off with a track from rising stars' Acid Mammoth's upcoming "Under Acid Hoof" LP, Reek's journey weaves a path through a range of genres and themes. Transitioning from the initial sludgey doom of the likes of The Slayerking, a hard rock edge is brought to bear by the debut of Bacchus Priest's occult doom track "White Sepulchre" and the Sabbath vibes of Night Resident, along with a D&S exclusive mix of Tidal Shock's psych doom "Black Hole Genesis" before plummeting into the Conan-level heaviness of atmospheric doomsters Automaton. A well-earned breath of fresh Greek air is soon found, however, in one of the comp's standout sections. Starting with the lauded Villagers of Ioninna City, a series of groups melds traditional Hellenic and Eastern culture with heavy music to brilliant effect, such as the use of the kemenje fiddle and throat singing by Around the Fire and the doomed Eastern melodies of Babylon Tree. A shot of adrenaline is then delivered by the psychedelic stoner of Arrakis and company, mercilessly followed by the caustic sludge attacks of Sadhus, The Smoking Community and Gagulta. Yet with a whopping 66 tracks, the ride thankfully isn't over. Morose atmospherics of Okwaho and Six Steps Above The Earth settle the mood before it rises once more with the swinging rock and roll grooves of Stonus and like-minded headbangers. The journey ends in suitably epic fashion with the wonderfully weird She Tames Chaos, the legendary Naxatras, and finally the crushing shoegaze/black/doom of Faunus, whose massive sound is directly inspired by Greek lore. Many thanks to the Greek heavy scene, Reek of Stoom, and Doomed & Stoned for an astounding collection of music, and happy trails to all those about to find a new favorite band in Hellas!

Stonus – Sweetspot

Stonus – Sweetspot
Self released – 2019
Stoner, Rock
Rated: ****

Stonus from Greece, that fabeled mythical country, captured by our very own Reek of STOOM on the Doomed and Stoned In Hellas compilation, is now situated in England, and their new single definitely hits the Sweetspot ! Indeed, it’s called Sweetspot and heralds the coming of their new album Aphasia soon to be released. Stonus is stoner and Stonus is bad ass! Five crazies who know how to tune dirty and sound filthy! Check out the amazing new single and be ready for the album!

A few words of thanks…

A few posts of thanks…

A few final words of thanks… A few posts to thank all those bands out there that delivered all that awesome heavy music in 2019. We loved so much of it! It shows in the many different lists that were sent in for the Stoner HiVe Top 20 Countdown. And not just that, it shows on the Doom Charts and on the personal lists that were posted on the HiVe and the Doom Charts. And ofcourse on all the personal pages of the Doom Charts Contributors; and those are many. Thanks to all that voted for the Stoner HiVe Top 20 Countdown. Without you crazy music fiends the Countdown would not work and the heavy music scene would not be this alive! Many thanks! Keep your ears on that rumbling bass and those pounding drums; it will show you the way to those almighty riffs and majestic grooves!

Thanks to everyone out there who were involved with heavy music. Either by listening, making or voting for it. It is once again staggering to think about the sheer encompassing amount of great music! I’ve scrobbled 2004 albums. That’s digital scrobbles. Not counting vinyl or cd’s. Or those that were labelled wrong and did not scrobble at all. And I know the members of the Stoner HiVe Team have listened to a lot of different albums among themselves. And yes, I know there are still many on my to listen to list. There are many in the Stoner HiVe inbox and there are many on the different listening platforms provided by the record companies that are still waiting to be heard… Some of which  we will get to before January is over… There is just so much!

Thanks to all the Doom Chart Contributors, all wise in their own ways and all doing what they do for the pure love of it. Nobody is making one cent for doing this. It’s fuel is the love of the heavy stuff and the reward is seeing somebody finding an album they love because of that. And thanks to the Stoner HiVe Team. Doktor420 for remaining that immovable stalwart of stoner and space rock. He is very reluctant to do any writing for the HiVe but will forever be the original guru and has without a doubt the best ear for the unknown stoner, space, psych and kraut. Madman Tony Maim, has fired up his own Black Insect Laughter to some degree, giving us an insight to the monthly ruckus he listened to. Yes! He is there went you need a rant or two and he knows where to find the good punk, the great thrash and the lovely hardcore. We love the occasional and unprovoked burst of madness entering the HiVe inbox about a new album. And hope he will continue to do so. Reek of STOOM joined the team almost exactly a year ago! And has since then quickly climbed up to fill a void in all the sludge, doom and grime genres within the HiVe as well as the Doom Charts and Doomed and Stoned. A prolific listener that is unrivaled in the amount he listens to as well as the quality of his writing. And last addition Kyle aka Shastabeast. With us since September, the man seems to love the fuzz, the scruffy riffs and the dirty grooves as much as the doom of yore and the sludge of tomorrow. And if there is one animal that can find even more unknown heavy stoner gold than featured on the blogs, it’s Shastabeast

Thanks to you all for doing what you do and helping the HiVe give more attention to more bands! And because of that, we shall try to give a little bit of attention to some of that awesome stuff we missed during 2019 before normal broadcasting service shall commence… So, the next two weeks will be filled with posts featuring stuff that was released in 2019… After that we look forward and onwards, cause 20 20 is upon us! Thank you all! Let’s stay heavy!

Doomed & Stoned in England – The Lost Tribes

Following up on the monstrous collection that was Doomed and Stoned in England, the Hive’s very own Reek of STOOM graces us with yet more English heavy with Doomed and Stoned in England: The Lost Tribes, out October 1st! He’s dug up even more excellent music from the edges of the underground, and this latest Doomed and Stoned comp spans the country, from the shores of Brighton to Liverpool, and across the Irish Sea to Banbridge. Including exclusive music from LITMUS and new releases from Cold in Berlin, Gévaudan, Under, and Gryflet, across 40 killer bands Reek maps a journey that flows through our favorite sounds, ebbing between intensities and genres. GURT kick things off with a bang as only they can, followed by more doom and gloom that morphs to the stoner rock of Orphan Gears and Trevor’s Head, before settling into the trippy space vibes of Earthling Society and LITMUS. While still keeping it weird, Under ratchets up the intensity, and the sludge onslaught continues through Voidlurker. Pulling back on the throttle but darkening the mood, Hundred Year Old Man ushers in some epic doom with Gevaudan and The Hyenda Kill, building up to the absolutely crushing sludge of A Horse Called War and Drore. Respite comes in the psychedelic grooves of Gryflet and The Green Ray, however, before a fittingly grand end to it all in the form of two long cuts. At almost 19 minutes, DOEM’s “The Nail” is the definition of low and slow, a sledgehammer that makes the sprawling psyched-out payoff of Stubb’s “Burning Moon” that much sweeter of an end to the journey. The newest Doomed and Stoned reaches across the extremes of England’s underground, and you’re lying if you don’t come away with at least a handful of new favorites.

Doomed & Stoned In England

A few months ago we saw another glorious addition to the ever growing Doomed & Stoned compilation catalogue. It was Doomed & Stoned In Peru, curated by Paul Bracamonte, and boasted 34 damn great tracks by 34 stunning heavy rock outfits! And now, on the verge of being released, we are going to get slaughtered by a new compilation: Doomed & Stoned In England! Slaving away tirelessly on this project has been our very own Reek of STOOM! Responsible for the artwork and the liner notes, responsible for the track listing and getting no less than a 104 English outfits to submit tracks for this cool collection! Did you hear me? A 104! I haven’t seen the runtime yet, but I think we can safely guess for it to exceed ten hours of straight listening… Doomed & Stoned In England is going to be available tomorrow on the Doomed & Stoned Bandcamp page! Be sure to get there early, cause it will take up the remainder of the weekend to listen to all them motherfucking cool bands! Congratulations to Reek of STOOM for this majestic beast of a compilation! Mammoth and massive in every sense of the word! And ofcourse an equally massive thanks to all the bands that contributed. And to Billy Goate and his Doomed & Stoned project that has become an ever growing legend! Thank you all! Top 5 artists listened to last week…

Mornin y’all. It’s Monday. A new week is upon us. And it’s almost time for a new edition of the Doom Charts! Happy times! Who will be the new Numero Uno? Which does not really mean it’s better than the rest, it just gotten more votes this month around. It also meant I needed to revisit The Skull and their The Endless Road Turns Dark album. It didn’t end up on Number One for nothing last month! We also started listening to the entire and amazing back catalogue of Billy Goate’s Doomed & Stoned compilation albums. Did you visit their Bandcamp site yet? Hours and hours and days and days of amazing music from a massive amount of regions. Go check’m out! It will teach you stuff! Just like The Sleeping Sea King does on their new album Creature Wears The Crown. It teaches there is still so much room to explore in melodic stoner metal. Soulful and heavy! You gotta love it! Pikiah’s All Down But Nine is a different animal. Hairy, slothy, grungy and very stonery! Different side of the heavy coin, but equally lovable! And Mojo Bozo’s Electric Circus puts the heavy coin on its side! Electric Circus is the classic psychedelic, groovy surf and loose stoner! It has everything to make your day and too make you smile! Happy times! Check’m out! Check’m all out!

Clouds Taste Satanic – The Glitter of Infinite Hell

Clouds Taste Satanic – The Glitter of Infinite Hell
Kinda Like Music – 2017
Rock, Doom, Psych, Instrumental
Rated: *****

Two months in a row, October & November, they came in second to the number one of the Doom Charts. Our very own Billy Goate from the awesome Doomed & Stoned had the honors to write a blurb about the new Clouds Taste Satanic. And he claimed that ‘Masterpiece is not too strong a word’ to describe The Glitter Of Infinite Hell. And we could not agree more. We’ve been following this foursome from Brooklyn since we first spun To Sleep Beyond The Earth back in 2014. And they have been releasing a steady output of instrumental greatness since then. A joyous occasion every time one of their evil sounding work of arts came out. Your Doom Has Come in 2015 and Dawn Of The Satanic Age last year. But those two records, we must confess, did not top their first one. In our opinion. Well, this one does not just top that first one or the latter two, they top every other record in the instrumental doom genre. Holy hell! It starts with the vinyl cover. Letting your eyes wander across the Jheronimus Bosch inspired painting Christ’s Descent Into Hell which can be viewed in the Met in New York. One wishes that the four were in Den Bosch, Netherlands last year during the majestic Bosch exposition. Hell, they should have played a show every night the museum was opened. Four musical art pieces are served on a double album set on bronze & bone color-in-color vinyl with gold & oxblood splatter. Four tales of Greed, Treachery, Violence and Wrath. And all four of them are truly amazing. This is doom on the very edge of the needle! But this isn’t just doom. It marries a truckload of genres in a rock symphony without ever becoming a classical opus. It is however a magnus opus. A grand piece of music that keeps on becoming better and better. And this is not just for the doom lovers out there. This is for every rock fiend! And I do mean every single one of them! Join the Clouds with their trip down below. Cause the soundtrack for everyone’s descent into hell just got a whole lot more addictive and amazing!
