Navarone – Salvo

Navarone – Salvo
Suburban – 2018
Rock
Rated: ***

We’ve been mentioning the Dutch five-piece Navarone ever since they started releasing full-sized albums. For some reason, we passed over on their 2017 album Oscillation. But we mentioned their self-titled debut EP, the awesome A Darker Shade Of White and 2014’s Vim And Vigor. But as the new one Salvo starts running; we imagine we remember why we passed on Oscillation. It might have been due to the fact that the band enrolled in some Dutch tv-program that produces weak artists, singers and bands. They should not have done that, they’re already better that that. You know the one I’m talking about; I believe it runs in every country across the globe. But hey, we all have to do whatever we have to do, so let’s give Salvo an honest run! Even bigger sounding guitars and gestures. A definite hardrock groove and a vocalist that damn well can sing, as we already knew. But he does implore some little tics and tricks that might become annoying after a few spins; just put second track Reset on repeat and you will hear what we mean. They move even more towards a condensed (hard) rock sound that implores pop sensible hooks, choruses and aims to please the big crowds. It’s a comfortable album with mostly predictable choices; more Alter Bridge than anything grimy, but still, it has its moments…

Stone Rock Festival - 2015

Stone Rock Festival

There’s a new festival in town. Or well, one that has been around for five years. But not that well known yet. Stone Rock Festival in Dalfsen, Netherlands. A festival that focuses on alternative rock, stonerrock, stonerpop, garage and psychedelic rock and all or mostly from that lovely Lowlands country with their wooden shoes, windmills and marijuana. This year featuring amazing bands such as An Evening With Knives, De Staat and General Midnight. But also other damn fine outfits like Navarone, Poor John, The Indien and few new kids on the block. And those new bands show definite promise. What to think of Mandrake’s Monster? Or Magnetic Spacemen? Or The Apologist and The Muncks? Hey, and then there’s also old dogs Raggende Manne! So get your ass over to Dalfsen for Stone Rock festival on Saturday June 6th! And if you don't feel like getting down, dirty and boogying your behind off you can always get frustrated and angry watching Het Universumpje; or maybe have you mind blown by them instead…

Navarone – Vim and Vigor

Navarone – Vim and Vigor
Suburban – 2014

What a revenge it was. Their full-sized debut album A Darker Shade Of White released in 2012. It levelled the floor with their slightly plastic self-titled EP from 2009. And now, only a big year later, Navarone returns with a follow-up called Vim and Vigor! On it, they only move slightly back towards their first release, continue from the second one on and most importantly change color once again. More big gestures and more direct rocking. Less experiment and more condensed rockers. Less Zeppelin, Less Crowes, Less Wolfmother and almost no Deep Purple and loads of Foo Fighters, some Soundgarden and perhaps Raconteurs or something else with hooky choppy guitars. They’ve also dismissed that lovely tingle of soul present on their former album and all this leads to conclude that Navarone did not attempt to recreate that amazing release and wanted to produce an entirely different album. It might take some more time getting used to and perhaps it will never be as righteous and good as the one they took vengeance with; but it still rocks and rolls and has you listening to a damn impressive throat…

Navarone – A Darker Shade of White

Navarone – A Darker Shade of White
Self released – 2012
Rock, Seventies, Blues, Southern
Rated: ****

During the Dutch Courage Month earlier this year we already mentioned Navarone’s first self-titled EP and notified of a full-sized album on the horizon. Well; it’s here and the amount of improvement in regards to that first release is staggering, incredible and a bit scary. That first EP was a watered down rendition of their influences; a middle of the road version of southern alternative rock. But I guess the Devil did show up at the Moon Music Studios and did in fact push them in the right direction. For this time around we are treated to some heavy seventies rock with a definite bluesy and southern feel that can rival the masters. We hear Zeppelin movement and Black Crowes rhythms, Wolfmother heaviness and Deep Purple progressive symphonica. The five grooveheads also add a small tingle of soul, a horn section and some moments reminiscent of Pink Floyd and with it deliver one hell of an eclectic album that always retains its focus. Mixed by Vance Powell (Raconteurs, Kings of Leon, Beck) A Darker Shade of White turns into a true monument of a record. One that will stand the test of time!

Navarone – Navarone

Navarone – Navarone
Self released – 2009
Rock
Rated: ***

Navarone was founded in the year of our lord 2008 and is described by themselves as Led Zeppelin taking a ride in Aerosmith's Rock ‘n Rollercoaster while The Black Crowes and Pink Floyd are trying to convince Soundgarden to taste some of their home made psychedelic brew. And they are pretty much right on the money there; as long as they meant for their brew to be a watered down version and that the only reason someone might o/d. or go psycho on it is because of their lack of tolerance for the middle of the road. But with a full-sized album on the horizon we do hope that they will deviate from that path a little and try the muddy left side or gravelly right side; cause there’s enough food for inspiration and thought here. Masterful axe-slingers; superb vocals and wicked drums. So let’s bring a toast to good days in the studio and the devil pushing them in the right direction… Like Tom Delforterie from Radio Blackout did with his version of the Navarone song The Devil's Got A Hold On My Head…
