Stoner HiVe’s Quick Fire Friday

Stoner HiVe’s Quick Fire Friday

Ever so often, when we find the chance, we fire off a Quick Fire Friday round. It’s a fast way to give a little more attention to some of those bands we love out there. And when time is scarce it might even be the best way to do some HiVe’n! So here it is once again, a small selection of amazing bands that deserve way more attention than the tiny amount of words selected here. But hey, it’s the Stoner HiVe Quick Fire Friday. And its burns hot like molten lava!

Mutautu – Basement Tapes

Now, this is exactly what we want to hear! This Finnish power-trio plays its blues exactly down, dirty and slow enough for us to immediately fall in love with. Mutautu’s three song counting Basement Tapes EP has a doom vibe and so much love for the fuzz and the heavy music of yore that we suspect them actually having transported from that golden age. There are old souls at work here. And they know the power of the great magnet!

Nadu – Determinator

If you are looking to get yer head right, with some groovy, punky, sixties garage and lo-fi grimy surf look no further. Nadu’s Determinator release has all of that and more. With choppy riffs and a punchy beat it all sounds exactly on point without it becoming overly anal. Dosed in a filthy layer of fuzz the seven tracks just sit exactly right! Even Chris Allison, of Lord Loud, who mastered the EP, could not mess that up! Grin! And we’ll keep grinning as long as we keep listening to Nadu!

Green Altar – Idle Worship and Ill Will Towards Man

This five-piece sludge metal outfit came out swinging with their new EP Idle Worship and Ill Will Towards Man back at the tail end of 2016. It ofcourse did not garner the attention it rightfully deserved, what with all the end of year stuff. So, here we are, with a torch, that brings Green Altar out of the shadow and into the flickering light. Sludge, doom, dark, black and ominous in every aspect. And with a vocalist that goes by the name Cannon The Green you can be sure the screeches and screams will truly make you shiver.

Brutofuzz – The Ditch

A couple of videos to tidy things up. The three crazy Italians of Brutofuzz have released their first single and video The Ditch. Still punky, still wild but with a touch of stoner, a lot of balls and all the pure grit you can bear. Check out The Ditch and get ready for everything that comes our way by name of the Brutofuzz!

Cojones – Origin of Fire

We have not yet found the time to write a poem to Cojones professing our love. For their earlier albums as well as the new one Resonate. And this is not the time or place either. We just want to get the word out on their new video for the Origin of Fire single. Check it out!

Stoner HiVe’s Quick Fire Friday

Stoner HiVe’s Quick Fire Friday

Last week we noticed it took almost a year to continue on with the Quick Fire Friday segments. But now the floodgates have been opened. And you might drown in the amount of new Stoner HiVe Quick Fire Friday segments coming at you! Which are meant to spread the good word on all those great bands out there. With just a small amount of words we intend to spread their musical prowess and our melodic belief…

 Crystal Balls – Roots

Growling death and blackened doom straight out of the gutter of hell where all the dead babies go to dance and do cocaine. Errr? Not sure where that came from. But I reckon it’s the malevolent tones of the two track EP called Roots by Gainsville, Florida, three-piece Crystal Balls. But there’s nothing shiny here. Just dirty, hairy and grimy music! Music for dead... Well... You know..

Ex Uaj Zed – 4

Here’s some lo-fi garage out of Poland to sink yer teeth. Just like the pronounciation of the band name. How do you pronounce Ex Uaj Zed? I guess we need to head on over to Poland to catch them live. Cause on their new album 4 they sound as wild and wonderful as ever!

Stonerror – Rattlesnake Moan

I wish I could have met them. Back when, I was wrecking havoc in Krakow. Sure, there was enough fun to be had with the likes of BNNT and the crazies we met along the road. But the guys from Stonerror are the righteous freaks we would have liked to drink with! Just take in those five tracks of their wonderful Rattlesnake Moan EP and you’ll get why!

O’ and check out that video on Youtube! Amazing stuff!

Cojones – Resonate

We’ve been in love with Cojones ever since we first heard their split release with Umor. And then Sunrise came out in 2009. Wow. It’s still in heavy rotation over here, so many years later. And the same goes for Bend To Transcend from 2012. Well, they’re about to release a new album called Resonate, in a few months. And here’s a little teaser!

Cojones – Live in Jena (Black Night)

Cojones – Live in Jena (Black Night)
Self released – 2013
Rock, Stoner
Rated: ****

For those of you who are unfamiliar with the Croatian grandmasters named Cojones; go shame yourself in some dirty little corner somewhere. Cojones burst unto the scene with a tight split record together with Umor in 2007 and leveled everyone in 2009 with the amazing album Sunrise and followed it up with a very impressive second one called Bend To Transcend last year. To celebrate their fantastic voyages through the European landscapes after those releases they have now sent a live record out into the world. It was recorded in Jena, Germany of March this year. Songs from both records are played with feverous joy and intense energy and it moves and it makes you grown. And so does the Jefferson Airplane cover White Rabbit. On certain moments the sound quality suffers a bit, but for the most part it feels like you are right there with the rest of the audience being shocked, awed and left breathless. I hope these guys start yet another tour very soon. Otherwise I will need to quit work early this year so I can attend the Sticks and Stone Festival in Nikolsdorf, Austria on July 13 or leave Slovenia sooner than planned to catch them, Been Obscene and Molior Superum at the Lake On Fire Festival near Waldhausen Im Strudengau in Austria on August 9… Dilemma!

Cojones – Bend to Transcend

Cojones – Bend to Transcend
Self released – 2012
Rock, Stoner, Psychedelica
Rated: *****

Ever since their 2009 album Sunrise I’ve been keeping an eye on the Croatian Cojones freaks. And lo and behold their sophomore effort has finally arrived. And what a monster it is; Bend To Transcend will definitely make my personal top Ten of this year just like their debut record did back in 2009. What stayed were the influences from the Palm Desert scene, Colour Haze, Soundgarden and Monster Magnet. What came were a few more accessible moments we know from the Foo Fighters and a voice that sometimes even resembles the raw Grohl. But apart from all the references mentioned above the albums is chuck full of incredible riffs, psychedelic lines and floating tones. Extraordinary bassloops, lines and rhythms and a drummer that never falters for a moment and hits those chimes like a mad professor trying to cook up a new form of acid. The entire record is one long groove that not only celebrates every beautiful thing stonerrock offers. But also takes cues from grunge, visits the psychedelic seventies and above all seems to transcend every one of those monikers. Just like it is not doing the record enough justice by just naming their influences; for even though they are there: Cojones is balls out a very own breed of musical magic. Like some daytime mojo and moonlit voodoo; it captivates and enchants!
