Number 10

Number 10

Another almost sixty points takes us from Acid Mammoth on Number 11 into the Top 10. Legendary bands releasing new albums this year all seem to have made one of their best in their career according to the votes that came in. And the one we find on Number 10 can be added to that majestic list. Renewed fire and all! Coming straight at you from the center of the earth. The vocalist has quit the drink and gotten healthy, can that be the thing that makes this new album so bizarrely good? Perhaps so, cause now, on their new, tenth album he is in extremely great shape, both lyrically and vocally, and perhaps better then he has ever been before. And then there’s a new bass player as well. Another spark of new energy to fire up the beast. Rumbling bass, thundering drums, rampaging riffs and wild solo work, and that’s just the opening track. Classic metal, motoring energy, a few more psychedelic tracks and a whole lot of fire! The band sounds even more inspired and worthy of the legendary status we always knew they deserved. As if they’ve always been that dormant volcano and now decided to erupt in a most glorious pyroclastic flow. I for one feel the fire in my belly! And I can’t wait to see them live again!

According to all of your votes, on Number 10 we find:

Motorpsycho

The Mothercrow
Holy Tears
Massive Hassle
Orange Goblin

It’s Tuesday already. It’s been a hectic week and will continue to be like this for a while, we fear. Little time to HiVe, but we will try to make the best of it. Although, the new edition of the Doom Charts will go live this Friday, which means, most of that free time will be used to get that in proper order. The above list is good though, we listened to nothing but amazing stuff it seems! And we thank Ronny for delivering that one and damn fine write-up for Buzz' Ayaz. Top shelf Anatolian psych rock! Love it! Go check out all them albums and if you use Spotify. There’s a handy list featuring all of those above if they are available there. Cause yes, the new and stunning Sergeant Thunderhoof won't come out till November and the new 1000 Mods will be released that month as well. Seeya all soon we hope! Have a great week!

Another week in the books! Returning from yet another festival to see a wonderful July Doom Charts edition. Will be spreading the good word about it soon as well as doing that Stoner Hype thing! You know, where we try to write a sentence or two about the Numbers 40 to 26… We did not manage to do much last week, too busy and had to leave to early. But even so, we hope you glanced at the words about that damn fine prog metal record by Rendezvous Point, the damn cool and damn heavy Espectro De La Conciencia, Jon McGough’s sweet as hell write-up about The Blacktones and of course that way too long screed about one of the albums of the year, Science, Not Fiction, delivered by Orange Goblin. We hope to do more this week! And know that in a few hours we will be diving head first into the fine words delivered by Ronny Dijksterhuis about that awesome Occult Witches album! So, stay tuned, stay with us, stay heavy!

Orange Goblin – Science, Not Fiction

Orange Goblin – Science, Not Fiction
Peaceville Records – 2024
Rock, Metal, Stoner,
Rated: *****

Renewed fire and all! Coming straight at you from the center of the earth. To be honest, it is not something I had expected a few years ago. Even though you will be hard pressed to find a bad album among the nine that came before, I had not expected Orange Goblin’s tenth album to be this freaking good. There were signs though. I have been so lucky as to see them live many times throughout their career. And only a few years ago, my fire, my desire to see them live had diminished. Orange Goblin rocked every stage they’d happen to find themselves on, but over the years their urgency had dwindled. And then I saw them again, a year or two again, and something felt different. And then I saw them again at Into The Void Fesvial in 2023 and Freak Valley Festival that year; and those shows sounded like an Orange Goblin ready to conquer the world! So fresh and hungry! Approaching their 30th anniversary, this is an awesome feat for a band and as said before, not something one would easily suspect. Vocalist Ben Ward has quit the drink and gotten healthy, can that be the thing that made it all so bizarrely much better? Perhaps so, cause now, on their new, tenth album Science, Not Fiction he is in extremely better shape, both lyrically and vocally then he has ever been before. And then there’s the new bass player. After founding member Martyn Millard decided to step down back in 2021, he sort of demanded Harry Armstrong formerly of Decomposed, Hangnail, Earls of Mars, End of Level Boss and frontman of Blind River to take his place. Great shoes to fill, but he seems willing and able. And with a new guy on board, ready to take on a first recording session with the boys, it might have kicked some more enthusiasm up everyone else’s asses as well. O’ and when you work with legendary producer Mike Exeter, who also worked with Black Sabbath and Judas Priest you are sure to bring your a-game as well. And Science, Not Fiction is not just an a-level album, it’s perhaps their best ever…

Launching their album into legendry by going underground with the enigmatic The Fire At The Center Of The Earth Is Mine, rumbling bass, thundering drums, rampaging riffs and wild solo work at three quarters of the song. There’s a motoring energy that’s even more prevalent on second track (Not) Rocket Science, but it’s the lyrics and vocals that immediately capture your attention. That beginning, the buildup, and then the ‘a-yeah’ taking it into classic metal territory. A charge, a rebel song, a call to arms, call it what you will, but if that song does not immediately fire you up, you’d best be switching to something else entirely. Second track (Not) Rocket Science calls for a chopper, a motorcycle, a brute to take out and weave through traffic with. That hang loose kind of bass work, sloppy yet o’ so tight. A seventies bridge taking it back to the perfect Ben Ward, taking his vocals and lyrics into even more riveting territory. He might not be a teacher or a preacher, but he is the one with the mic and his message is one that should resound throughout every bar and on every stage. For, it is not rocket science, and that’s all you need to do. Do right and do it right. A message that is extrapolated in third track Ascend The Negative, a different groove, especially towards the slow down in the end, where the punch becomes bigger vocally, but also with a thumping rhythm and riff.

A bit more psychedelic and kaleidoscopic in colors, False Hope Diets has even more messages and teaches of Ward inside. Which you can read in whatever fashion you want, which is the first brilliant aspect of the song. Yes, the message will be in the eye of the beholder. Sticking with the lyrics, they also feel perfectly written and executed. The different riffs melting over each other and suggesting the different sections of every song. Making it difficult to know what came first and what suggested which direction the song should go. And then Ward goes and does his best Wyndorf, turning the entire song into much more Monster Magnet than what Orange Goblin ever did. But don’t think it’s all message and Orange Goblin philosophy lessons they jive, hell no, there’s also more horror motifs like in Gemini (Twins Of Evil) or piano opened and ominous Cemetary Rats. Last one starting slow and doomy, before going Motörhead on your ass and infusing the guttural with speed. First one bringing groove to slower metal and hard rock and might be as much about the different sides of ones soul as it is about the story that unfolds. There are more brilliant cuts on the album and the deluxe version even has a tenth track Eye Of The Minotaur, but your regular edition brings it all to a closer with the End Of Transmission track. Ominous in message for all the Orange Goblin fans, for it not only looks back at everything they’ve done, there’s also a moment where Mr. Ward contemplates if this is the very last recording they will ever do. Orange Goblin was always big, but with Science, Not Fiction they’ve become even larger. As huge as a planet, and this album could bring the fire to everyone around the world. For Orange Goblin is sounding even more inspired and worthy of the legendary status we always knew they deserved. As if they’ve always been that dormant volcano and now decided to erupt in a most glorious pyroclastic flow. I feel the fire in my belly! And I can’t wait to see them live again!

Morning… FB / Meta has been out of control recently. The Doom Charts has had issues, even though we changed nothing in our operation. And for those following Stoner HiVe, well, you know there’s been loads of annoying stuff happening there as well. And now the news came that the always good, always decent, nothing but good Mel Lie from Sunday’s Heavy Tunes has been completely banned from FB  for no reason whatsoever. You would hope that someone starts a new social platform soon. Incorporation that which was good from FB and keep it completely clean of the nonsense, algorithms and bots FB has been using lately. Wishful thinking? Well… It’s another week and we’re gonna try and post this thing. Shall we try with or without links? Let’s see what happens and fingers crossed it works as it has always done in the past… Cause with new members Jon McGough and Ronny Dijksterhuis we have more capabilities to spread the word on all that good and heavy stuff out there! And it is deserved for them and the bands they write about. Quine for instance or Yajaira! We mentioned clips by Luna Sol and Occult Witches and managed to post that Stoner Hype thing where we blurb about the Numbers 40 to 26 of the last Doom Charts. And let’s not forget, we were honored to premiere that full album by Kahfa, out now on Argonauta Records! Go check it out! Check’m  all out!

Stoner HiVe’s
Top 10 Most Listened Albums Last Week…

Another week has passed and it was another week filled with lots of different albums. The ten above got the most spins. But there is one that is now on heavy rotation and will surely be for the rest of next week. The self-titled debut by Vitskär Süden. I already saw it mentioned by many of the Doom Chart Contributors the past week, but had not yet found the time to check it out. Even though the Doom Charts ofcourse premiered their first video a couple of days ago: Trickle of The Snail! It has everything you love and yet is entirely different! Go read what Frazer Jones had to say about it on his Desert Psychlist! And after that, check out the rest of the albums! Cause they’re all freakin tasty!

The Number One album of 2018

The Number One album of 2018

We are approaching the deadline for your lists for the Top 20 Countdown of 2019. That deadline is early December 13 CET… So, if you want to contribute, send them now: HERE!  But before we start the Countdown of 2019 we look back at those past 10 yearsof Stoner HiVe. Indeed, we celebrate 10 years. 10 years of heavy riffs, romps and stomps! 10 years of heavy magic! That all started back in 2009 when the blog started, just so we would have a vehicle to count down the best 20 albums of 2009. And now we look back to last year… The edition of 2018 had 79 lists to tally, a first decline in sent in lists since 2009, but it still made the outcome more valid then when we started back in 2009. That list, deduced out of the lists sent in by 79 heavy music fiends,  started with Orange Goblin – The Wolf Bites Back on Number 20! It featured Greenleaf and their Hear The Rivers album on Number 3 and the amazing Our Raw Heart album by Yob on Number 2. For the entire Top 20 of 2018, visit the Countdown So Far post on Stoner HiVe… But what album ended up on the Number One position back in 2018... Well, that’s when we wrote:

“We jump almost forty points to reach the Gold Medalist of the Stoner HiVe Top 20 Countdown of 2018 according to the 79 of you lovely freaks that sent in their lists of favorite albums this year. We thank all of those voters once again, without you this would not be possible and it would not be this much fun to do. We also thank all those bands that made the Top 20 with all of those amazing albums! But we also thank the bands that did not make it; cause there is beauty on all of them! And like every year, we will list the 21 to 100 in the next few days somewhere. So, at least a few of those albums will get a little more attention; even though they probably deserve even more. But even though it was obvious from the picture above, we still need to say a few words about the Number 1 album of 2018. Cause it came with a bang! Like a gunshot on an empty street! Like a hammer strike against the Gods… We are referring to the album released by a legendary trio. A gang of three who had not produced a full album for twenty years. The doom is vibrant, alive and more ingenious than ever. This is not doom that will drag you towards the abyss, but one that takes you up high and on an adventure. We’re going on a journey packed with riff-axes and bass-machetes. Raw, slow, delaying and discoloring sludge-riffs, carrying monotonous vocals that waft you to sleep. Thick, dirty, bass-tones deliver the perfect heartbeat for your slumber and dreams of the ideal marriage between stoner metal and doom… The Gold Medal goes to…”

And we had the honor of having Kyle aka Shasta Beast revisit the album from last year… “The 20th of April, in the year of Our Lord Iommi 2018, will forever be remembered through a danker, heavier green haze than normal. The surprise album of the decade that was Sleep's "The Sciences" dropped out of nowhere like a ten ton bong rocketed straight from the Weedian planet, and what a magnificent comeback it was. Any band taking a twenty year hiatus between albums has its work cut out for them in returning to the studio, and Sleep's mythic legacy ensured any new music would face judgement by the most die-hard, tinnitus-crippled of ears. But lo and behold, any doubt was quickly cast aside by the monolithic riffage contained within "The Sciences", a true Sleep record that slung riffs as low and slow as ever with weighted tone and nod only Cisneros and Pike can deliver. Valuable newfound energy was also provided by the more than capable drumming of Neurosis' Jason Roeder, whose deft work behind the kit complemented the trudging riffs perfectly. Barely over a year later, from the impressive weed puns and Sabbath worship of "Giza Butler" to the colossal, sludgy crush of "Antarticans Thawed", "The Sciences" still delivers a classic yet fresh Sleep experience that will no doubt wear its doomed crown of kush for years to come.”

Number 20

Number 20

It is record Number Nine for these cats and we mentioned the album back in June. It made us giddy with glee and made us have sloppy seconds over and over. For it is their undying servitude to the sloppy meat and rich gravy side of stoner metal that we cannot get enough off. Which tastes different with every bite and every spoonful, cause they always manage to incorporated something different. Maybe not as much every time around, but always a little hint of this or that to keeps things, interesting, enticing and spicy! Well, this album just might be their most diverse album to date. Experiments with blues, hardcore and prog are embraced while the doom and stoner metal command attention. It is their signature sound alright, but almost invigorating and shiny! And then there’s Motörhead’s Phil Campbell adding a bit of his sauce to the mix and you are hearing a record that stands tall when looking at all of their albums that came before. And there aren’t that many bands that we can honestly state about that they haven’t released a bad record yet and their last one might actually really be their best… It’s one hell of a beast and it bites hard!

It is record number nine and we still turn completely giddy when we first spin a new Orange Goblin record. Even though the band has been steadily releasing records that profess their undying servitude to the sloppy meat and rich gravy side of stoner metal, they have also incorporated something different every time around. Maybe not as much every time around, but always a little hint of this or that to keeps things, interesting, enticing and spicy! Well, The Wolf Bites Back might be there most diverse album to date. Experiments with blues, hardcore and prog are embraced while the doom and stoner metal command attention. And songs like In Bocca Al Lupo or The Stranger are definitely what set The Wolf Bites Back apart from the records that came before. It’s Orange Goblin alright, but almost invigorating and shiny! Add to this that Motörhead’s Phil Campbell adds a bit of his sauce to mix and you are hearing an Orange Goblin record that stands tall when looking at the records that came before. And there aren’t that many bands that we can honestly state about that the haven’t released a bad record yet and their last one might actually really be their best…

Helldorado

Helldorado!

The first edition was an absolute smash hit! Surrounded by scantily clad women breathing fire, wrestling their asses off and throwing knives; the entire outlook of the festival is grandiose. Much more carnival and much more colorful than the already legendary Speedfest was. Let’s hope this will have just as a massive run as the festival that came before. You could just as easily spend time watching the rock’n roll wrestling show; messing around with the crazy Mambo Kurt as you could be drinking yourself silly watching the most amazing bands. What a line-up!

Komatsu

The majestic Duel had the honor of kicking off this first edition. Sure, they entered the stage to just a handful of crazies in front of the stage. But soon; the Cobra stage was being watched by loads of people. And Duel did right by them. What a set and what a sound! A new fan for life was born with every song they played. This much is sure. When you play your home town it might be easy to let go of the reigns and slack off a bit. Komatsu is never one to cruise through their set; they had to pound everyone into submission with a very heavy and sludgy set. The first gig on the Tarantula stage was perhaps plagued with a few sound issues. On the other hand, it’s freaking Komatsu and they will level anything that stands in their way!

 Dead Lord

Tyler Bryant & The Shakedown brought us back to the Cobra stage to hear their eighties reminiscent, southern tinged rock brought forth with sheer perfection. It’s Aerosmith and Guns ‘n Roses; but different and more bluesy. We loved it! But not enough to keep us from heading back to the Tarantula stage again to hear the Swedes from Dead Lord hit us over the head with their Lizzyness hardrock. A quick hamburger before we had to see what kind of ritual La Muerte had in store for us. And an unholy ritual it was! Candles, incense and an intense wall of smoke masked the band as they threw us their wicked rock. Sure, there were some jokes here and there about the burlap sack the vocalist was wearing. But hey, it’s almost 5th of December over here…

Kid Congo

Tigre Blanco and his gypsy soul brought us down to earth and gave us some air to breathe, and we must confess, chat with long lost buddies. (Hope you got home safe Schnaps!) One of the best shows of the night started right after this. Monomyth, now with Boudewijn Bonebakker (Gingerpig, Gorefest), gave us a grand adventure. Can you imagine, thousands of speedrockers and drunken crazies all standing still with mouths wide open listening in awe to all the spacey goodness Monomyth brings. Well, it happened, they mesmerized the entire venue. Wild man Kid Congo and his Pink Monkey Birds then turned everyone out and on back on the Tarantula stage. He is without a doubt a true legend, and even though it was clearly not everyone was immediately smitten with the maestro. The ones that were saw a wild and wonderful character creating an entirely new universe!

Imperial State Electric was perhaps the least interesting show of the night. Unfortunately, every song they sent out into the venue from the Lion stage seemed to be bland and drowned out in fact, by all the screams and shouts in the crowd. And they were not shouting at or rooting for the band. But at each other; acting crazy and seemingly crazier by the minute. Which we all know would only grow louder and weirder as the night progressed. We should go back to Birth of Joy who were tearing it up on the other stage. But as mentioned before; you meet a lot of old friends on Helldorado and you make even more new ones! Grin! Another one of those bands that delivered one of the best shows of Helldorado was: Orange Goblin. Massive! Truly and insanely massive! Unfortunately, we had to miss the last part because of a scheduled interview with Red Fang. Which went, let’s say, okay?! Grin…

Red Fang

We caught the last part Nashville Pussy and got liquored up to watch the Red Fang rampage after that. And yes, there they were, creating the largest pit up till then. Especially when Wires and Prehistoric Dogs hit the crowd. As if all those older dudes and few women had been waiting until that moment to go absolutely berserk. What a wicked set! After which the real shit took hold and the drinking got out of control and sent a whole freaking lot of us through a ghostly funhouse (a real one yes.) and we got out just in time for yet another wonderful show by powerhouse Triggerfinger. And that was the only freakin sad part about Helldorado. That the fun had to stop and that we now must wait a whole freaking year for the next edition!
