We Kill Cowboys – Back From The Dead

We Kill Cowboys – Back From The Dead
Mongrel Records – 2025
Rock, Grunge, Alternative, Stoner, Punk, Metal
Rated: ****

South African cool cats We Kill Cowboys is signed to wicked Mongrel Records and should stick with them for the rest of their career. Cause it seems like the perfect fit, the outfit and label both have a snarl. And a certain way to wag their tail if they have some delicious rock and roll bone in their snout! And rest assured, they won’t let go until you hear it as well. And if you follow the HiVe you know we’ve been mentioned a lot of singles they’ve released over the past years. And now, on December 5th, they will be releasing a six track EP called Back From The Dead! A highly infectious take on late nineties alternative that not just snarls but bites as well!

They signal the new EP Back From The Dead as a rebirth for the Cape Town quartet turned five-piece. A band long fueled by the grit of punk, the weight of grunge, a splice of stoner and the bite of post-hardcore. A bite that has definitely gotten deeper on the new six-track. After stepping fully into the role of lead vocalist, Alex Muller drives this new chapter with a voice that cuts through like wildfire. Powerful and decisive, carrying tales of rebellion and resilience. The arrival of guitarist Floris Le Roux thickens the band’s sonic storm, locking in with Mornay, Andrew, and Miggs to forge a force that feels dangerous, growling, untamed, yet intentional. Rising from the underground’s chaos, they return louder, sharper, and fiercely alive, even if the whole EP is over in 23 minutes… We Kill Cowboys is Back From The Dead and not wasting any time killing it!! Ferocious stuff!

We Kill Cowboys - Earth Demon

Wanna see how We Kill Cowboys do their thing? Well, go watch the new live performance video for Earth Demon! We mentioned the single back in September and felt compelled to mention the new video as well, since we have watched it multiple times! Go HERE to read what we wrote back in September. After watching the video of course…

From the PR wire:

We Kill Cowboys Unleashes Psychedelic Grunge Fury with Earth Demon Live Performance Video

Cape Town's dynamic 4-piece rock 'n roll ensemble, We Kill Cowboys, is set to captivate audiences with the release of their live performance video for the latest single, Earth Demon. This electrifying visual spectacle, directed by Owen Wilson, unfolds at LuvBuzz Studios the band's rehearsal space, transforming it into a psychedelic haven where music and mayhem collide.

Fronted by tattoo artist, and singer-songwriter, Alex Muller, We Kill Cowboys is a force to be reckoned with. Their genre-defying sound melds psychedelic rock, punk rock, grunge, and stoner blues into a potent auditory cocktail that has left audiences clamouring for more.

The video is a raw and unfiltered glimpse into the heart of the band’s sonic onslaught. Shot amidst the pulsating energy of their rehearsal studio, the video captures the essence of a We Kill Cowboys party, where friends join the chaos for a night of unbridled celebration.

Jono Tait’s, the mastermind behind the searing guitar riffs that slice through the air, takes centre stage, while Andrew Middelkoop’s thunderous metal drum fills inject an undeniable pulse into the music. The foundation of their musical onslaught is laid by Danie Otto, whose fuzzy bass grooves resonate deep within, providing the backbone for We Kill Cowboys' aural explosion.

Known for their immersive live performances, We Kill Cowboys is ready to shake the very core of the music scene. Their shows are a relentless surge of energy, cranking the amplifiers to the max and leaving audiences' ears ringing and minds reeling. We Kill Cowboys - Earth Demon

We Kill Cowboys - Earth Demon

They released their Live In The Studio version before they put out their studio version meant for the EP. It’s Earth Demon by We Kill Cowboys! The due to be released next year EP called Rage has already seen the release of two singles now, all somehow referring to human shortcomings. Pink Codeine, talking about addiction, was pure psychedelic punk fire, but Earth Demon takes this a notch further. Leveling their rock aim at narcissistic inclinations, this track whirls around you with furious energy and of course in part thanks to that Eastern motif starting the Earth Demon run. Can't wait to hear the rest of Rage!

South Africa's vibrant music scene is about to experience a seismic shift as Cape Town's very own Psychedelic Grunge Rock pioneers, We Kill Cowboys, announce the release of their latest single, Earth Demon, out now on Mongrel Records. The track is set to captivate audiences with its powerful message and hard-hitting sound, setting the stage for the band's forthcoming EP, The Rage, expected to drop at the end of January 2024.

We Kill Cowboys has always pushed the boundaries of musical expression, and Earth Demon is no exception. The band, known for their fearless exploration of

diverse genres, has dedicated this song to all the narcissists out there. “It's a love song, but one with a profound twist.” Says vocalist and guitarist Alex Muller. “Earth Demon delves into the complex dynamics of empath/narcissist relationships, extending beyond just romantic entanglements to encompass family bonds as well.” The lyrics take listeners on a journey, shedding light on the toxic nature of these relationships and the damage they inflict. The band refers to these individuals as “Earth Demons," a term that seems fitting for their destructive influence.

In terms of musical evolution, We Kill Cowboys is making a significant shift towards a harder sound, a transition that is evident in the new single. The track features metal beats, fuzzy bass lines, and a wall of guitars, all perfectly complemented by Alex's distinctive husky vocals. Floris Le Roux, who handled tracking, mixing, and mastering for the single, has played a pivotal role in capturing their evolving sound. The collaboration with Le Roux has not only influenced their music but also pushed the band into uncharted sonic territories, to the delight of their fans.

"Earth Demon" is just a taste of what's to come from We Kill Cowboys, as it serves as the second single from their upcoming EP, "The Rage." Fans can expect the EP to deliver a raw, unapologetic, and electrifying musical experience.

We Kill Cowboys - Pink Codeine

We Kill Cowboys - Pink Codeine

Out since early June, that wild single and video Pink Codeine by psychedelic punk rockers We Kill Cowboys. We got lucky when we got to premiere their Earth Demon video back in April, thanks to Mongrel Records. And this one is pure psychedelic punk fire! Incredibly catchy, and with a definite groove. Check out this Pink Codeine!

Get ready to embrace a mind-altering journey into the realm of Psychedelic Punk Rock as We Kill Cowboys unveils their new single and accompanying music video. With their signature blend of raw energy, psychedelic aesthetics, and rebellious spirit, this boundary-pushing band is poised to ignite a revolution in the South African heavy music scene.

The track, Pink Codeine is a sonic explosion that transports listeners to a heightened state of consciousness. Seamlessly merging searing guitar riffs, pulsating rhythms, and ethereal vocals, the single encapsulates the essence of the band's unique sound. We Kill Cowboys has built a reputation for their high-octane live performances, captivating audiences with their electrifying stage presence and infectious energy. With their new single and music video, they continue to push the boundaries of creativity and deliver a sonic punch that resonates deep within the soul.

Commenting on the release lead vocalist Alex Muller expressed, “It was inspired by my struggles with addiction years back. Thinking about the psychological dance that you go through, more so than the physical addiction of a substance. Then it also ties into my thoughts around the ego and the true self and being able to wake up to what your truth really is.” “This song is more of an observation, a sharing of life experience. I think anyone could relate to it and let it speak to them in the way it needs to for that individual… I guess the message is that it’s never too late to wake up to stop hiding from yourself.” She adds.

European premiere - We Kill Cowboys - Earth Demon

European premiere

We Kill Cowboys - Earth Demon

In conjunction with the almighty Doomed and Stoned over on the other side of the Atlantic, we’re honored to bring you the video premiere for the new We Kill Cowboys video for Earth Demon. Recorded live in the studio, the Cape Town based, four-piece, psychedelic punk rock band, ask no quarters, take no prisoners and ride that groove train all the way down to kick-ass-ville! Check it out below…

We Kill Cowboys is raw energy. We Kill Cowboys is having a good time. We Kill Cowboys is about flipping the bird to conformity while sipping on some ice-cold Lemonade...
We Kill Cowboys is a Cape Town based, four-piece, psychedelic punk rock band, the brainchild of tattoo artist and singer-songwriter, Alex Muller.

The initial project was born out of the 3-month lockdown of 2020 when Alex had the time to rediscover her musical roots and put together a collection of songs for her first solo EP, entitled Let it Burn. The EP was recorded by long-time friend and fellow musician (and legend in the Cape Town underground scene) Jon Shaban at Atomic studio CT (formerly STFD Studio). A record deal with STFD and Just Music swiftly followed and, with lockdown restrictions easing, thoughts soon turned to turning the EP into a live prospect.

While the EP had reflected the more melancholic isolation of the lockdown experience – sparse arrangements, built around acoustic guitar and Alex’s plaintive voice, a gut feeling was compelling her to seek a bigger, more electric sound. Approaches were made to good friends from years gone by in the scene and soon enough, the group gathered in the live room at the label office to spin some shapes. Things exploded from there with the band drawing on their varied influences, spanning Metal, Punk, Rock n Roll, Country, Western Classical, Indian Raga, Folk, Blues, and a host of other genres. The result was the recently released DIRTY BUSINESS EP.

With the heavier direction the band are heading in with their new material the decision was made to move to Mongrel Records, the rock and metal imprint owned by Just Music. Today’s sees the release of the video for their live in studio performance of new track Earth Demon which will form part of the upcoming studio release set to drop later this year.

Lyrically, Alex delivers a raw, uncompromising, and anti-establishment polemic, drawing directly from her lived experiences in the music scene and the world at large.

“Earth Demon, quite simply, is about narcissism. It’s about being in a relationship with a narcissist, being raised by a narcissistic parent and then it’s also a metaphor for society. It’s when the veil is lifted and you’re able to take a step back and see the truth of the situation, how toxic it is and realise it for what it is…We call them Earth Demons. And this song was written for them all.” – Alex Muller
