Tin tin

Recently, I've received some collectible tins from a couple fellow bloggers. These come directly from the period when I wasn't collecting, and so, like anything from that period, I look at it quizzically as if I'm a dog and someone has just placed a piece of lettuce in front of me ("What is this? I can't eat this and I can't play with it!"). The first tin was a Sweet Spot version that came from Max at Starting Nine . I apologize for the horrible stolen images, but the World Series game is almost on, I've got a story to write for work and there is no time to fool around with a camera. Trust me, this is what the tin I received looks like. Without the muddled blurriness. This is from 2007 and I was collecting a little in '07, but mostly just base Topps and I had no clue that there was a thing called Sweet Spot. Now let's go to an era in which I had no knowledge of 99 percent of the cards that were produced then: More ganked...

Paulie!

So, Paul Konerko gets hit in the FACE with a pitch? He STAYS in the game? And on his next at-bat. He hits a HOME RUN? And the Dodgers traded this guy ??? Fire the owner!!!!!!!! Yes, I know Frank McCourt didn't have anything to do with that trade. I know it was over 10 years ago. It's still my final answer. In fact it's my answer for everything. You: "These pants are too tight." Me: Fire McCourt! You: "Sorry, I broke your favorite mug." Me: Fire McCourt! You: "You're fired." Me:  Oh, crap. ... Well, McCourt is fired, too! In fact, when McCourt is forced to give up the Dodgers -- and I pray that it goes that way -- I'm going to credit Konerko for making it happen. Nice going, Paulie. And thanks for speaking your mind, Peter O'Malley . (More cards from madding soon).

Back that thing up

OK, mind out of the gutter everyone. There are plenty of other web sites for that sort of thing. This isn't one of them. What I'd like to do with some of these cards that I received from Dan of Saints From the Cheap Seats is focus on the backs. The fronts get all the glory with their pretty pictures, their refractors, their stained glass and cloth swatches and bat bits. But I'm a word guy, and I find interest and amusement in what is written on the back. A note or two first about Dan. I had finally gotten to the point about two weeks ago where I could assemble some cards and send them off without someone having sent me something first. That handful of cards went to Dan. A few things off his want list. But before I could actually feel proud of my miniscule gesture, I received a package in the mail a mere couple of days later from none other than Dan. He had done the same thing I had just done, except with a much larger stack of cards. And now I'm way behind on packages...
