Pocket card produces desired results

Sometimes it feels like I'm traveling on a different wave length than a lot of card bloggers. I guess that's what makes life interesting. An example: Almost two years ago now, the phenomenon of "wallet card" swept the nation ... er, the nation's card blogs. I got caught up in the hysteria, too, but then I realized "wallet card" wasn't doing what I wanted it to do. For many, "wallet card" was an opportunity to take their chosen wallet resident out on a tour and take photos of the card in various places. At least one blogger is still doing this. Then again, he lives in a place where there is a lot to see. But that's not what I wanted to get out of wallet card. Instead, I wanted to re-create the damage that I achieved as a child when I loved a card so much that I carried it around with me. Like this card. This is one of two Dodger cards from the 1975 set (the other was Steve Yeager) that I carried around with me for a per...

The 2 1/2-by-3 1/2 bias

I received these two 1969 Topps Stamps from Mark Hoyle awhile ago. I like them quite a bit. Who doesn't like anything with a picture of Don Drysdale on it? And Ron Fairly? Well, he's just dreamy. Ask those Mad Men secretaries from the '60s. But these stamps sat and sat and sat on my card desk for weeks upon weeks, waiting for me to have something to say about them. I had already babbled about stamps before , and, well, nothing else was coming to me. There was another reason why they sat there. I don't know what to do with non 2 1/2-by-3 1/2 items. Oh, I have a lot of irregular cards. I refuse to be prejudiced. But if it's not 2 1/2-by-3 1/2, it's going to have to be really special (see 1975 Topps minis) for me to make specific accommodations. Otherwise stuff like this disappears in a box. And that's terrible. Stamps from 1969 with pictures of Don Drysdale should not go in a box, with a cover, so I can stumble across them once every six months an...

Life's too short

Although I'm not into current baseball cards as I once was, I do like to buy what's on store shelves on a regular basis to stay up-to-date, feed the pack-ripping monster and provide some blog material that doesn't bore people who were born after the '80s. Unfortunately, this time of year is terrible for latest card product. Bowman has just arrived and I feel as qualified to evaluate Bowman as I do teenage girl fashions. The other two card products that just arrived on a hook near you are Gypsy Queen and Panini Donruss. Eeesh. I had my choice of either at Target last week. I wasn't going to touch GQ -- it looks as ugly as it ever has and at 10 bucks for 20 cards, I'd rather pay $4.99 for 30 Panini Donruss cards. So I went with Panini Donruss because of the price and basically to explain one more time why I don't buy Panini products. (Yeah, I know I'm already on the record -- I just want to make sure my position doesn't get erased). I know tha...
