Night Owl Cards

It has been a crazy couple of weeks for card packages. I swear that everyone's New Year's resolution involved sending out cards. I am surrounded by them. My usual cabinet top that houses incoming cards quite nicely, is woefully inadequate right now. There is going to be a tragedy in which a pile of cards falls on the floor when I'm not around and the dog turns it into a horrible scene of canine carnage. Newly arriving card packages have been such a regular occurrence that I'm doing things that I've never done before. For example, yesterday, I received two card packages in the mail ... and set them aside. Unopened. This NEVER happens. It's not that I didn't care. It's just that I was headed out to work, and I had a feeling I would need some cheering up when I returned home. The work shift wasn't too bad, even though my boss had a starring role. Still, I couldn't wait to get home and open my two patient packages. I'm not going to revea...

I have been offering this particular item up for whatever late 1950s Dodger card I can find on the Million Card Giveaway site. I'm hoping it will land me something from 1959, a great year in Dodger history. At the very least, I'm hoping that the people I've made offers to don't out-and-out ignore me. That is very annoying. How can you have redeemed a late '50s Dodger card and not pay attention to the MCG site at least periodically? Or is it really that difficult to hit the "decline" button? Anyway, I've got to at least try with this card as it's the oldest one I've redeemed. This will be one of my final acts on the MCG site. I have left a few older cards, like Georgey boy, in my portfolio in hopes that they will entice someone to trade me something that I like more. Then my very last act will be to order shipment of those final cards before the March deadline. I'll probably do that in January, before the 2011 cards hit shelves. Me...

Everyone is into the 1960 Topps cards because it's the design Heritage is "borrowing" for its cards this year. Although I'm not collecting Heritage this year (just a few packs here and there), I do like the design. Now that collectors have moved on to the latest and greatest sets, like O-Pee- Chee , Finest and Bowman, I thought I'd return focus to the design and feature some of the Dodgers from the original 1960 set. In case you didn't know, this year is the 50 th anniversary of the Los Angeles' Dodgers first World Series championship , the 1959 champions. A team that Bill James once called "the weakest World Championship team of all time." So, when kids pulled a Dodger card out of their packs in 1960, they were something special.
