Red-letter day

I've mentioned before that work has been even more of a time-suck than previously. It's infringing on blog posting and I don't think I can go to my bosses and say this is the reason why something's got to change, but something's got to change!   The first three days this week I worked more than the usual eight hours (plus a couple hours on Sunday) and I was prepared to do the same Thursday. I had a story interview arranged before I started my shift and I thought, "welp, I just added more hours that I won't get paid for!"   But it didn't turn out that way. Thanks to some general panicking about the weather, every single sports event in our area was canceled last night. So I ended leaving work at 10:45 p.m! That never happens. Usually I'm there until 12-12:30 and on busier nights (like tonight), I'll close up shop around 1:30 a.m.   So I got to leave work early. That's a red-letter day around here! (I don't have much). But I should...

Do I have too many Dodgers?

Yeah, yeah, crazy talk. I know. But I have a reason for asking that question. Not too long ago, our dear Collective Troll blocked off traffic, backed up a truck to my house, and unloaded a card package so dense and massive that the resulting thud set off every last car alarm in the city. I wasn't there to see this, of course. But my neighbors still tell the tale. And I can't help but believe them, because all I have to do is look at the box, and think about how my mailman is still walking upright and it's the only reasonable explanation. But after sifting through the cards and cards and cards of Dodgers -- old stuff like Lopes here and new old stuff, like Heritage, and just plain Dodger good times -- I realized, "Holy crap , I have almost all these cards." That's never happened before. I almost always need at least half of what people send me. I found this quite disturbing. Here Troll went out of his way to jam a package full of Dodger variety, and snobby N...

Of pocket knives, postal carriers, and ... oh, yeah, baseball cards

I'm not on speaking terms with my mail carrier. Not that he knows this yet, but the next time we see each other face-to-face, which happens about, oh, every four months, I am going to give him the silent staredown. Until today, I had not receive mail in three days. Sunday and Monday, of course, there was no mail. On Saturday, we had a wicked snowstorm in which we received a foot-and-a-half of snow between 4-10 a.m. We received no mail that day, too. Whatever happened to that saying, "neither rain, nor sleet, nor dark of night ..."? I guess "wicked snowstorm" isn't on the list, huh? So, I was anxiously awaiting the mail today because I knew there were some cards on the way. I did receive three packages, which is fantastic. But I know my mail carrier is holding out on me. The mail load was probably quite heavy after no mail on Saturday (I received a number of other articles of mail today, as well -- bills, magazines, investment notices informing me that my r...

Set-collecting fool

I don't know why I do these things to myself. Sometime before I agreed to a trade with Kris of Cards in the Attic I decided that I would collect the 2008 Stadium Club set. This is not the wisest decision. The first 2009 sets are a month away from release, and I'm attempting to complete last year's set with all of its conniption-inducing variations. But here I am showing the cards that I received from Kris. And if you go to my want lists, there's the rundown of Stadium Club cards I need. Have I mentioned that I won't buy any more blasters of this stuff because the collation is horrendous ? Have I mentioned that I'm still woefully short of completing the '08 Topps Heritage set? I must have a whole tool box of screws loose. Still, Stadium Club is very nice, despite all of its issues. So I was happy to acquire 58 cards toward the planned completion of the set. Here are some highlights of the cards I received, along with a very nice surprise from Kris at ...
