For those not thinking football

I was supposed to be watching the Bills playoff game today, which would probably mean no posting here. The game was moved to Monday -- during a time when I'm working, thanks a lot -- so now all I have to do is stare at the snow (we've haven't gotten as much as Buffalo but apparently it's coming tonight). There are NFC games today, but I don't have much interest in that conference. Sounds like I've got some time to post! I was happy to see the snow though because that means it's cold enough that we don't have to deal with the weird weather that led to the power outages last week. But on No Power Wednesday the mail did arrive and it included a package from Torren' Up Cards . Zippy Zappy's downsizing! It was just the thing to divert my attention from the no heat/no light.     Kenny doesn't send your typical card stuff so I had cards of the Dodgers' two most recent big-name Japanese pitching acquisitions to warm things up! He has the honor ...

The '60s are history

I mentioned the other day that I bought a couple of cards with the cash that I received from my latest Beckett Vintage article. You saw the Campanella MVP card a few posts ago .   The other one was the 1960 Topps Tommy Davis card, and with that card, I have completed the 1960s Topps run of Dodgers cards.   No, I don't have the Ken McMullen rookie, or the Doug Camilli rookie. But those floating heads cards carry unreasonable prices because of the heads floating around with them (Rose, Uecker) and chances are good I will never own them. Even if I had the cash, it seems silly to buy a card for that price that looks like that.   So, except for those, I own all the Topps flagship Dodgers from the '60s.   It wasn't easy and it's taken decades. There were obstacles I never expected, like the price of the Bart Shirley-Grant Jackson card. I also had to overcome quite a bit of indifference early on, as I was just a wee-one during the back half of the '60s and most of th...

Not about the cards

I don't do a lot of posts that don't feature cards. I'm pretty much " about the cards " all the time with little use for various extras -- Funkos and bobbleheads and all that clutter -- that can't fit into a proper binder page or toploader.   That doesn't mean I don't own any memorabilia that isn't cards. I believe you've seen my Ron Cey-Fleetwood Mac lamp? I just make sure that it can fit sensibly into the card room without anyone thinking about calling the hoarders show.   For instance, I'm a sucker for ephemera. It's only logical that I wound up working in a printing medium, with my appreciation for the printed word and how it appears on a page. And so, I can't resist things like news clippings, scorebooks and yearbooks. People send me that stuff, too. I guess they know me. It's the one non-card thing that you can be sure I won't discard. I'll either put it on display or lovingly place it in a folder for safe keepin...

Mood lifters

Every self-help outlet churns out the same list of mood lifters to their perpetually down-in-the-dumps readers. It often goes something like this: Exercise Sleep Get outdoors, particularly in the sun Talk to a friend Eat healthy foods There is a whole sub-category of mood lifters such as music, movies, pets, shopping and travel, too. But not once do I see anything in any self-help list that mentions baseball cards. Baseball cards have boosted my mood more times than I can count. I'm currently in need of a mood-boost given my family situation and work situation (co-worker is on vacation, meaning I'm working six straight days). I've tried posting every single day this week in hopes of writing myself out of my mood. It hasn't quite worked, so I thought I'd go for the big guns: a selection of cards sent by Nick of Dime Boxes . Anyone with that many flea markets and card shows at his disposal should do a fine job of lifting a fellow card-collector'...
