Five vintage cards I've never written about ... I think

I've had a little bit more luck with finding vintage cards for my collection since moaning and groaning earlier .   It's nothing to write home about (but I will write about it), and it's mostly a product of actively pursuing it rather than my nasty habit of hoping the vintage comes to me, But it's an improvement. One of the reasons I desire vintage cards so much, other than that they are the way God intended cards to be, is that I have so few of them in my collection relatively speaking. Every time I realize I have more Donruss cards than I do cards made before 1971 I want to punt half my collection into the street and start over. I have so few of them that if there's a vintage card in my collection, I've probably written about it on this blog. Yup, every one. I get so excited when I get one I have to announce it to the world. So the challenge here is to find five vintage cards in my collection that I've never written about ... I think. I probably have. He...

Vintage for vintage

I was one of several people who recently took up Bo from Baseball Cards Come To Life on a vintage-for-vintage trade. As I was scanning the cards, it occurred to me that there aren't a lot of vintage-for-vintage deals among bloggers. They do exist and I've participated in several but they're a relative rarity. This isn't the Net54 forum. I think there are a wide array of card interests on the blogs and some collectors -- perish the thought -- aren't interested in vintage. But also, vintage isn't as easy to collect as more recent cards. It's not as available, especially for those who are condition-conscious. And it can get kind of expensive. We bloggers, in general, aren't pulling down the six-figure salaries. I don't have a bunch of vintage cards just lying around either. Most of the vintage I own I want to keep. But I was able to send several extras and a number of "modified" 1960s cards to Bo for some beauties from 1967 and 1969 ...

Right now, Topps is just a one-night stand

Something occurred to me when I was buying that value pack of Topps Chrome the other day. Because of circumstance and general lack of interest, I go to the card aisle maybe every other week these days. Sometimes less, sometimes more. But on average, every two weeks. When I'm there, I don't always buy something. Often, I'm just looking. And my pack purchasing of 2013 cards has been limited entirely to "let's see what this is like," the occasional Dodger and potential trade bait. I am not trying to complete any sets with these purchases. I have no long-term commitment to these cards. When I make a card aisle visit, it's for nothing but a quick thrill. A flurry of wrappers; some oohs and aahs; wham, bam, thank you ma'am. Now consider what I am planning to do this weekend. There is a card show scheduled. But it is being held in exact same place as the biggest dirt auto race of the year. People from everywhere will be coming to the Syracuse fai...
