Random pick-ups, musings and determinations

Blogging in detail can take a lot of time and effort. I've got several observations and pick-ups to discuss and none of them are worth dedicating a whole post to -- so let's drag out the "housekeeping"' label and piece together a bunch of unrelated topics! I do that a lot, though not since 2024.   Up first is this terrific Hideo Nomo Dueling Dugouts insert from 1997 Pinnacle Inside. I've been intrigued by these from afar for a long time and finally received my first one last year (Karim Garcia on "the back" of the Vladimir Guerrero card). It was time to get a full-fledged Dodger one this time.   The kicker to these is you can turn the dial on the side and it shows the player's stats for that year in the center windows. So cool. Here is a look at the other years on this card:   Outstanding. Interestingly Nomo's stats with the Japan Pacific League's Kintetsu Buffaloes are shown for 1994 but 1993 is blank despite Nomo playing for the same ...

Packed a punch with me anyway

My first sportlots order of the year is finally here. There always seems to be one straggler card I'm waiting for two weeks after everything else is in. But content is content, it doesn't matter when it appears on here.   Ol' Walt was the late arrival -- almost got to the point where I sent a "I think the mail lost my card" messsage. But instead I get to declare that this card finished the Dodgers team set for the TCMA The 1960s II set from 1981!   This kind of card is about all that I ordered this time around -- stuff that either finished or got me closer to finishing team sets or set sets. The whole order turned out to be smaller than my usual sportlots order. I guess I was trying to save a little cash. The total seems slight, but it still packs a punch with me!     More TCMA stuff, but I'm nowhere near completing these team sets. I'm making a dedicated effort to finish the 1978 TCMA 1941 Dodgers set, which the Kirby Higby card is from at left. Hoping ...

As complete as it'll get

It's getting down to the last few days of 2022. I've exhausted just about every card anniversary that has occurred in the past year. But one thing I've never done is acknowledge my complete 1962 Topps Dodgers team set. It's still the 60th anniversary of the original wood-bordered set for another 12 days. In fact, I don't even recall what the last card was that completed my team set for '62. I went back through the blog to see if I could pin down that triumphant day, because this blog is always about celebrating my card milestones. Still, I couldn't find it. Then I realized why I couldn't. It's because I haven't completed it. I may never complete it. Thanks to this guy: Bob Uecker is on one of those rookie prospects cards with Dodgers prospect Doug Camilli. I'm just not willing to pay 60 bucks or so for a tiny floating head, I don't care if Ueck did get me through a couple lonely Saturday nights watching Mr. Belvedere. So, this team set ...

Bob the (collection) builder

There are few bloggers who have consistently built my collection like Bob . In the past there was Dave from Tribe Cards, Dan from Saints From the Cheap Seats, and Eric S., whose blog name I don't remember. They would flatten your home with a few palettes of cardboard and leave snickering while you looked around the property in a stupor. But bloggers don't have the means they once did. (Johnny's Trading Spot aside). Postage is crazy, cards are expensive and nobody has the time to blog anymore. If I'm gonna get a monster package, it's probably going to come from a reader, with a little more free time. Bob has been the recent exception. He sent another blast, as varied as ever.   A pin from the 1988 World Series. I love the notation "Dodgers beat A's in 5" so everyone knows what happened. I don't have much knowledge about commemorative pins and there seems to be 27 versions for every event, but a few key ones are nice to have. A couple of Bills fr...

The rest

OK, I have some more time now to write about the goodies that landed on my porch last Monday.   The Orel Hershiser auto from the previous post was one of the highlights, but it wasn't the only highlight. I received envelopes from four different people. Besides Gavin's "thanks for reading" prize, I received another envelope from the great state of Oregon, from The Diamond King . Upon reflection, he said he wasn't too enthusiastic over a few of his card show dime box pick ups, but I sure was. I am an admitted mark for colored border parallels, even Panini ones, so yes I am quite happy about these cards showing Kershaw in his milkman delivery uniform. These three cards happen to be Nos. 894, 895 and 896 in my Kershaw collection. That No. 900 post is on the horizon! A needed Jackie mini from 2019 also appeared in the envelope. Another parallel that I love more than I should. The next Monday envelope arrived from the Card Stacks Blog , which has perked back up again...
