Embracing the villain

For the second straight year, and the fourth time in five years, the Dodgers have reached the League Championship Series.   Many fans -- I have been made very aware -- don't like this. But that comes with the territory when as a fan you're part of an exclusive club for more than one or two years in a row. The Dodgers are the villain.   I know that relatively few on social media will be rooting for the Dodgers. (A lot are rooting for a World Series between the Mariners-Brewers, who are practically the same team). I have tried to add known Dodgers fans to my following list in hopes of balancing out the anti-Dodger content, but the best-case scenario is to avoid social media as much as possible. We'll see how that goes. Social media is great for getting immediate info on plays during the course of a game, nothing else compares.   A lot of the people who comment on this blog aren't part of social media sites, so I'll move on to the card part of the post.   The two...

Night owl in million card giveaway wonderland

I'm not the first one to say this, but I can't believe how excited people are getting over unredeemed codes in the Topps' Million Card Giveaway. I know what you're saying: Night owl, I thought you loved the Giveaway. I do. I love it dearly. But I am collecting the entire set. The Giveaway is just a fantastic side effect. But I don't understand why anyone would pay a bunch of cash on ebay solely for some codes when the chances of you landing a 1988 Mike Loynd or 1984 Steve Lubratich are extremely good. Sure, you could wait until the way-back machine returns to the '50s cards, but code-hoarders don't strike me as the patient type. The other day I received an email from somone looking to hammer out a deal and send me a 1971 Thurman Munson card. And I don't mean the "Yo Mama" card pictured here. I mean, the actual 1971 card, one of the big cards I need to complete the '71 set. The person was willing to trade it to me for nothing more ...

The best glasses in the history of baseball cards

Well, the best glasses in the history of MY baseball cards, anyway. Often I receive a comment on a previous post that inspires yet another post. That's a pretty standard blogger phenomenon, I think. And that's what happened when Patricia of Dinged Corners left the following comment on my post about the 1981 Topps Kent Tekulve card: "KT wore the best glasses in the history of baseball cards." Wait, is that a challenge? Game on! I'm a sucker for "the best" and "the worst." I love lists and all of that ranking nonsense. Did KT really wear the best glasses in the history of baseball cards? I went right to my collection to find out. What I came up with was the best 25 glasses cards. Unfortunately, I'm lacking a ton of cards from the '60s, so there are no horned-rim beauties on this list. One day, after I win the lottery, I'll buy up every set from the '60s and assemble every card of horned-rim wearers as if they are in the stands a...
