M is for ........... more cards!

You fellow '70s kids know already that M is for Martha , but fortunately there are collectors in our corner of the ridiculous internet that know that M is also for More Cards.   Johnny has been sending sequels to his recent card distributions and I received my second share about a week ago. He's still ridding himself of players who start with M that no longer live up to his standards. My last package was filled with Max Muncys.   This package was filled with ... no, not Willie Mays ...   Dustin May.   Lots of needed parallel action there. Now that May is with his third team in three years, it's safe to say he's not going to be the future star promised by his prospect cards. I could've told Johnny that quite awhile ago (and gotten my cards earlier!). May just couldn't put it all together -- or stay away from killer salads.           Mmmmmmmmm. Those hit the spot. Mighty nice of John to send them.     There was also one Max Mu...

The one and only

I tend to underestimate the size and depth of my collection. When someone says I should set up a table at a show to sell cards, I instantly scoff. I could never have enough cards that could interest people enough to buy them!   That's the way I'm built. I'm not a natural boaster and generally feel inadequate much of the time (though I'm getting better the older I get). I always assume others have more/are better. And that's the way it is in the card world, too.   None of that's true, though. I've been receiving cards from people around the world for more than a decade. It's obvious I have a collection that is both impressive and unique. But I also know there are people out there with far more cards, far more impressive cards, far more expensive cards than me.   I don't know any of those people, I don't think. The one collector that I know who comes close to that -- in my mind anyway -- is Johnny of Johnny's Trading Spot . He's the only ...

Gaming the system

About three weeks ago, Johnny's Trading Spot held a giveaway for his readers, randomizing off 350-plus cards from one of his many, many, many finds.   Most of the cards were of the magazine variety from Baseball Cards Magazine and the like from the late 1980s and early 1990s. I'm very familiar with those, having come across them back in the day and also through adding the Dodgers to my collection.   They are pretty cool though nothing I look to collect (except the ones modeled on the 1975 Topps design). When Johnny displayed what was up for the giveaway, my eyes instead gravitated toward a nine-pocket page that contained a certain oddball from the 1960s.   I didn't think more of it, the chances of getting that page wasn't great, there were 30 different pages offered up!    Well, lo and behold, I ended up landing page #18, the majority of which were 1968 Game cards.     I don't know how but I gamed the system!   Outside of the one Dodger in...

Grateful

Why do I continue to show off recent "trade packages" when I know there's limited interest and the views will be low, perhaps lower than ever?   A few reasons:   1. Easy content. I'll admit, it's an easy post. Maybe that's why people don't read. They know I didn't open a vein.    2. It's the right thing to do. I'm pretty certain that most people who send me cards would like some public acknowledgement. I know from experience that it's cool to see others write about the cards I send them (and I always try to comment). And it's better than a thank you email, although that's welcome, too.   3. I'm still grateful. Not nearly as many collectors send me cards as they did 10 years ago. It could cause someone to walk away -- "it's just not worth it to me to write and write and the only cards that come my way are the ones I bought." Maybe I appreciate it more now when people do send me cards. But, truthfully I've alwa...
