Give me a little cardboard with that jersey

These cards crack me up. There aren't many cards that make me laugh instinctively over the ridiculousness of the card, but these "relics-on-steroids" cards certainly do. Why in the name of Matt Wieters did they make the jersey swatch so big? Why didn't they just stuff an entire used jersey shirt in a bag and sell it that way? The things people think up. While I'm at it, when is a jersey a "tool of the trade"? A bat is a tool. A glove is a tool. Mark Teixeira is a tool. But a jersey? That's a garment. That said, I am appreciative of receiving my first Ron Cey relic card. It came from Greg at Lake Effect Cards , along with some other Dodger goodies. I have received a bunch of generous card packages lately. And I haven't decided how I'll post about all the goodness. I'll either drag it out or cram it into one epic post. But Greg gets special treatment because he seemed to spark the wave of packages, and because he's threatening to se...

162-0, and other impossibilities

I believe I owe Mr. Kuroda an apology. Because, in a public forum -- specifically in the comments on this blog -- I doubted his ability to defeat the Padres. Oh, me of little faith. As everyone knows by now, Kuroda handcuffed the Padres for 5 2/3 innings, Matt Kemp swatted a home run, and James Loney hit a two-run single to kick off the Dodgers' first 162-0 season! Yeah, I know, I just went from giving them not enough credit to giving them too much credit. But I am a fan. That's what fans do. I didn't get to see any of the game, since I was at work. Earlier, I did get to see plenty of other games. I watched some of the Mets-Reds, Pirates-Cardinals, Rockies-Diamondbacks, Nationals-Marlins, Yankees-Orioles, and Indians-Rangers. I don't have the MLB Extra Innings package. But I take full advantage of the free preview weeks. So, in lieu of missing out on the Dodgers' 4-1 victory, I am going to show some of what I received in Thorzul's Cheapie Group Break fr...

Don't mind if you do

Another of John's wonderful card packages from the U.K. arrived this week with an accompanying note that began: "Hope you don't mind, but I have built another pile of Dodgers cards, so I decided to send them out." Mind? Do I mind? Hardly. To illustrate, here are some of the things that I DO mind: 1. The fact that it's going to get down to 20 degrees below zero here before this night is over. 2. The phrase "all-new." As in: an "ALL-NEW episode" of whatever television show it is that I'm not going to watch. It's either new or it's a rerun. There is no "partially new." 3. Local television sports broadcasters who try to impersonate Chris Berman. News flash! Chris Berman is nobody you want to be. 4. Four-way stop signs. 5. Grape-flavored anything. I was forced to take grape-flavored medicine for any cold I had as a kid. It's ruined me on grape forever. 6. Short-prints. I think I might have mentioned that o...
