Team colors: Padres

I admit I am quite enjoying the fact that the Padres are not in the playoffs. I knew they weren't good enough, and I didn't appreciate their fans laughing at my Dodgers. Unfortunately, the Padres' demise benefited a team that I despise even more. I dislike the Giants so much that I am actually rooting for the Braves, an activity I can remember participating in maybe two other times in my life. Ick. But that's the way the postseason works sometimes. You root for some strange teams, and you hate yourself when it's over. Recognizing that the Padres and my team, the Dodgers, are now both battling for tee times on Southern California golf courses, I've decided to dedicate my next "team colors" post to San Diego. What the hell. Let's let bygones be bygones. That is, if you can consider ripping a team's choice of colors as patching things up. San Diego is one of those teams that did a complete team color overhaul in midstream. Normally, I...

The best part of card blogging

Wow, it's been a crazy week here on the blog. Five days ago, I was wondering what I was going to post. Then people starting sending me 2010 Topps cards, bippings arrived almost daily, and former major leaguer Jerry Reuss started reading my blog. Suddenly I couldn't keep up with anything. I haven't written about a trade in over a week, and that's just not right. Because trading is probably the best part of card blogging. That is a big thing for me to say. I didn't start out this blog with trading as my No. 1 purpose. I love to write and that was my primary objective -- to write about what I love, because I wasn't writing about what I love at work anymore. Then I discovered other great things about card blogging. It was therapeutic. It was informative. It helped me connect with like-minded and very interesting people. And there was the cool stuff, like the Troll turning Mr. Reuss on to my blog. But finding someone who will take your junk, for lack of a...

Post-Christmas blowout

I spent my Christmas money today. Most of it anyway. Oh, what a lovely day that is. It's the only day of the year that I enjoy shopping. It's like I suddenly become a male version of Rebecca Bloomwood . It's alarming. Baseball cards will bring that out in a guy. Thank goodness this day comes around only once a year. Otherwise I couldn't stand myself. The first think I bought were some binders and some pages. As dull as those things are, I am very happy to have them. I can really do some damage on the stacks of cards I have piling up. But then I'm going to have to figure out where to put the binders. I might have to pull a Wrigley Wax and build some shelves in the basement. That will definitely get the shopping willies out of my system. After that, I went to the hobby shop, and I swear that will be the last time. First, the place was awash in football and basketball. Even the boxes with loose packs. Yawn. Secondly, I was dying to buy a box of something. But every...
