While waiting for Heritage

I took another trip to a big box store today in quest of 2015 Heritage. There was no Heritage at Target. On Saturday night -- actually early Sunday morning -- I took a trip to Walmart in quest of 2015 Heritage. None there either. And there was an earlier trip to Target last week in search of 2015 Heritage. No luck then. So while you've seen 2015 Heritage on various blogs and especially on Twitter, just know that there are a lot of us who are still waiting for the flipping stuff to show up. Isn't Topps located in the Northeast? Don't I live in the Northeast? Is it that hard? Apparently so. But anyway, the reason I want to see some new Heritage isn't because I'm looking forward to the set -- the 1966 look does nothing for me, and you already know how I feel about the short-prints . It's because it's March and blog ideas during this month are always scarce. I'm too busy to tackle something involved, so I need something easy, like a pack break of ...

The blog now has accessories

A few weeks ago, my wife came home with this knick knack of an owl, pronounced that she loved it, and promptly stuck it on top of my card desk. Now, she knows I'm a night owl, and has known it ever since she met me. She also knows that I run a blog called "Night Owl Cards". But I have no idea whether she placed it on my desk for that reason. I could ask but, you know, we're both very, very busy people. I prefer to think of it as a blog accessory, whether it is or not. I like the idea of accessories. Every once in awhile, when I see that a blogger has made up a business card for their blog, I think "I wish I could get things together and make my own business card." It'd be a nice extension of the blog. But I don't have to do that right now because I've got something more handy: The blog now has its own mug. This arrived from Baseball Dad . He and I think it's pretty appropriate. If you are hard of seeing it's an owl ...

Some these guys I know, some I don't

When I posted that pack of Panini Hometown Heroes a week or so ago , I was holding out on you. Baseball Dad also landed a pack of this on me. I admit, I don't handle non-major league baseball well. I'll watch minor league games. I'll work up a little bit of interest for minor league sets. But otherwise I am not spending money on anything that's not major league in quality. I like to see the big boys play. I'm like that in other sports, too. I just can't get past the "god, that pass was crap, that'd never fly in the NFL." Then there is the Olympics. They're pretty much "professional only" these days, and I'm not getting into whether that's good or bad, but not being able to see baseball in the Olympics has really put a damper on my interest in USA Baseball. If the guys playing on the USA team aren't someday going to play in the Olympics, then all I've got is waiting for them to make the majors. And that means: ...

Quick

You ever have one of those weeks where you mutter to yourself "I'm glad I have a job, I'm glad I have a job, I'm glad I have a job" over and over without even knowing it? It's been one of those work-sleep-work-sleep weeks (Or in more cynical terms -- this) . I had hoped to have already written that epic post about the loot from Jaybarkerfan's Junk by now, but I haven't even started it. I need something quick. Something short and to the point that I can post here in 5 minutes before I dash away again. Fortunately, Baseball Dad came to the rescue by sending me a pack of Panini Hometown Heroes. As I said on an earlier post, I have had a difficult time finding some of Panini's products, not that I'm really looking. One of those is Hometown Heroes, the only Panini product that truly interests me. But Baseball Dad insisted that he had packs at his Target, and to prove it, he sent one. (By the way, I noticed in the comments on this post ...

Takes direction well

I don't expect everyone to follow along with what cards I need at every second. But if you're extremely perceptive, you may have noticed that the Nebulous 9 list is now mini-size. It's a mere three items. That's because a couple of collectors did spot that list and did one of the finest jobs of fulfilling that list since I first posted it a few years back. One of those collectors was Baseball Dad , who sent me a few cards just recently but had to rush a certain other one to me right away. That, ladies and gentlemen, had been the card that was on the Nebulous 9 list longer than any other. It's the card I wanted most (perhaps the only card I truly wanted) from the 2012 Panini Cooperstown set. Welcome, young Vin Scully, legendary voice of summer. You're finally off my wish list. The other collector was Mark and his Ephemeras . His mission was to take out my entire Nebulous 9 list and he just about did it. This card arrived before Mark's m...

Why you should root for the Dodgers tonight

I'm pretty certain that by this point in the postseason, every baseball fan has settled on "their team" for the playoffs, whether or not "their team" has been eliminated already. But on some off chance that someone turns on the TV tonight and has no earthly idea who to root for in Game 6 of the NLCS or the rest of the postseason, I am here to help with my own biased brand of baseball card illustration. I think you should root for the Dodgers. It's rather clear cut. To help me underline my point, I am using some cards that I received from Baseball Dad and one of his sons (I guess that would make him Baseball Son?). I sent my curled up 2010 Topps Chrome collection to son of Baseball Dad and I received some great cards as thanks. So here you go. This is why you should be rooting for a Game 7: 1. Let's start with tonight's starter, Clayton Kershaw. Not only is he almost the consensus best starter in baseball, but he might be the best h...
