What can I say about Series 2?

Usually, I have a fairly good idea of what I am going to write about before I start a post. You don't last long in my line of work unless you have a plan heading into deadline. But, golly, this is Series 2. Everyone has seen the design since way back in January (even longer for those who saw the previews back last summer). And a whole crowd has eyeballed the cards in Series 2 already. You're bored. I'm bored. Allen & Ginter isn't until freakin' August. Why go on? Well, I'm not a defeatist. When there is new product to beat to death, it's my job to turn it into a bloody pulp. So I tried out a few things on Twitter and found out that, "yes, I do have something to say." What I'm saying is pointless drivel. But you're used to that by now. So let's see pointlessness in hanger box form. But first I better show you some tidbits from the loose pack that I bought from Target solely so I could scan the wrapper for the top of the ...

I'm chasing these guys, too

A couple of months ago I speculated that I would complete the 2012 Allen and Ginter set earlier than any of the previous four A&G sets that I have completed. Thanks to some beneficial trade packages that took out a bunch of wants late this summer, I was down to a few cards in no time. But, of course, SPs have a way of extending every completion goal into a bloody, death march. It's like the Fear Factor with cards. YOU WILL COMPLETE THIS SET AFTER YOU RUN THROUGH THIS OBSTACLE COURSE LITTERED WITH BEAR TRAPS, HOLD YOUR BREATH FOR 10 MINUTES WHILE SUBMERGED UNDERWATER IN A VW BUG, AND EAT 29 LIVE LARVAE OF THE EASTERN EYED CLICK BEETLE! THEN, and only THEN, can you complete your set! I'm not willing to do any of that. So here I still sit, two cards away from completion. A couple of people took pity on my cowardly ways and at least got me down to those two cards. Jeff from 2 by 3 Heroes sent me Carlos Pena and Buster Posey. Pena is a short-print but Posey i...

Hey, big spender ... and other World Series musings

I've got a lot of disconnected thoughts about the upcoming World Series, so I thought I'd throw a few of them together here. But these aren't all of my Series thoughts. I have at least two other posts prepared concerning the Rangers v. Giants. Fortunately, Major League Baseball isn't in any kind of hurry to get the World Series started, so I can get all the posts finished before the thing starts. (Here's a plus for you, Fox. You may not have gotten New York vs. Philadelphia, but at least it's not going to snow on your broadcast). First off, even though I am a Giants hater and I want that team to die an ugly four-game death while clueless San Francisco fans puzzle over how Aubrey Huff couldn't lead them to a championship, I am enormously pleased about this matchup in one aspect. It kills the notion that money can buy a title. Money can buy a title sometimes. But not all the time. Yet, people are always ragging on baseball because teams like the Yankee...

I'm trying really hard not to say "who are these guys?"

I recently opened six hobby packs of 2009 Tri -Star Projections Series 2. They were my winnings for taking first prize in a contest at Boxbusters . Many thanks to Ross. It was an interesting prize because I am about as far from a prospect guy as you can get. And I feel guilty about that. I'm constantly running into baseball fans who can tell me about this prospect and that prospect in their favorite team's organization. I can't do that. I know a handful of Dodger up-and-comers and you can put a blanket over the rest of them, because I ain't got a freakin ' clue. So, as you can imagine, opening six packs of a set of nothing but prospects was the equivalent of a 10-minute blank stare. That said, I was pleasantly surprised by how entertaining the packs were. I've read on some blogs about how much they dislike Tristar , but after opening the packs I have a different viewpoint. The cards aren't all that bad. And if you like collecting guys like this, they're...
