One and done players, update 3

Friday was One-Hit Wonder Day, according to a few of your favorite pop-culture outlets. As a pop-music aficiostorian (that's "aficionado" and "historian" combined into one terribly appropriate new description), this got my attention. I have indeed watched many a VH1 countdown show, chronicling the greatest one-hit wonders, from start to finish. As is often the case in these "one-hit wonder" lists, some of them miss the point of "one-hit wonder." One hit means one hit. No more. A-Ha, often considered a one-hit wonder for "Take On Me," actually had another minor hit with its second single in the United States, called "The Sun Always Shines On TV," which went to No. 20. I remember it being played on the radio. Therefore, not a one-hit wonder. Same deal with Quarterflash, Men Without Hats, John Parr, Animotion and a bunch of others that are classified as "one-hit wonders." They had other songs that climbed th...

One and done players, update 2

With no ability to buy cards right now, the next best thing I can do is research them. I have several card research projects stagnating, and I decided to do a little bit with one of them. The "One and Done Players" project involves researching which players received one -- and only one -- card during their playing career. There are a few guidelines that go along with this that I outlined in the original post , but I'll repeat them here. "By one card, I mean one card. The player can't have appeared on a previous 3- or 4-player rookie card. The player can't have appeared on another set issued at the same time (for example Fleer or Score). The only exception I'll make is minor league cards. They can have all the minor league cards in the world. I won't count it against them." I have another rule to go along with the above, but I'll wait until it comes up later in the post. A few people have been nice enough to help me with what is sur...

C.A.: 1982 Topps Denny Lewallyn

(Welcome to the Winter Olympics. They're a pretty big deal around here what being within a couple hours drive of Lake Placid. I'll be watching. Interested sometimes. Bored other times. Confused even more times. And still waiting for baseball. It's time for Cardboard Appreciation. This is the 198th in a series): I've started another project. Yup, I know. I've got a whole bunch of other projects going on and I've already whined about how I can't focus enough to pay attention to them all. But I've made a half-hearted effort to return to some of those projects, so there is hope for this one. Besides, I think it's cool right now. And that's all that matters. I've always been interested in players who enjoyed just a brief time in the major leagues, especially when it comes to baseball cards, right? And I've always enjoyed focusing on players who have received just a handful of cards, right? Well, the best thing of all is figuring whi...
