Showing posts with the label 1963 Fleer

I'd like the Dodgers to sweep tonight, but I'm not confident about it. The Yankees would really have to be in rough shape to lose to Brent Honeywell Jr. and friends. But it could be one those 13-11 games, so there's a shot, and if it's going to happen it will be the second time the Dodgers have swept the Yankees in the World Series. The first happened in 1963. I wasn't around in '63. So I've often wondered what that was like. The Dodgers sweeping the Yankees on the grandest stage is my dream come true (why it needs to happen today ). Damn, the only time in my life I've wished I was 10 years older. All I can do is read about it . And go back in time the way only my little blog can do to see what life was like 61 years ago.   Since this is a card blog, I'll address the card portion first. In 1963, the Topps monopoly was picking up steam with only Fleer mounting a minor challenge.   Fleer put out a dandy little set in 1963. (The green card backs might b...

Stay inside, don't interact with people, get cards

I don't know why I just wrote that. I'm not telling you to do that. I think that when I'm done writing this someone will think that I am implying that. But I'm not. Talking to humans is good. Getting fresh air is good. Getting lost in traffic is good. Spending too much for parking is good. Standing next to sweaty, unshaven people named Frank is good. ... Oh, gosh, there I go implying. So, anyway, The National has come and gone again and I didn't go anywhere again. But I do have new cards. How do I do that? I stay inside and don't interact with people, silly. OK, seriously, I get new cards every year at the same time people are journeying to The National because my birthday happens to be a couple of weeks before The National. People give me cash for my birthday, I order cards for my birthday, I wait for the cards to arrive, and they usually show up right after The National wraps up. It's very convenient. And when I think about hotel room costs an...

It takes only one card to make a show a success

When you get to a card show twice a year there is a certain amount of pressure when the next one comes around. I feel the need to find something memorable at the show, because who knows when I'll get that opportunity again? Here it is the beginnings of spring and, chances are, summer will be dying or dead the next time I'm show-bound. So I was in that frame of mind this past weekend when I walked into the building and handed over my admission fee. For starters, I wasn't all that excited by what was on the want list I brought. If I look a little deeper into that, it's probably not a good sign, but on the surface, I knew some of the stuff I really wanted -- 1960s Dodgers high-numbers, 1970s Kellogg's/Hostess cards -- probably wouldn't be at the show. But I could hear those non-deep-thinkers shouting in my ear: YOU'RE AT A SHOW! YOU LIKE CARDS! FIND SOMETHING AND BUY IT! Suitably kicked in the pants, I got down to work. The show is at the state...
