Leftovers

I have a handful of different collection-related thoughts and scans sitting around that need to be posted before they go bad. You might dismiss this as warmed-over leftovers. But I happen to love leftovers, so this kind of housekeeping post appeals to me a great deal. Here are some random items that separately couldn't make up their own blog post. A little over a week ago, I mentioned receiving a Topps Ron Cey Collecting Box. Through some research I discovered that they were first advertised on Topps' 1981 wrappers. The above wrapper is from 1981 and you can see the advertisement on the right. This wrapper was sent to me by GCA of The Collective Mind . What I didn't mention in that earlier post is that I also discovered that the Cey Collecting Box continued to be advertised on Topps wrappers in 1982, 1983 and 1984. GCA also found one of those examples from 1983 and sent it to me. A Ron Cey Collecting Box AND a chance to win a Colecovision???? 1983 really ...

I am Mr. Lucky 13

You may have noticed that the "Big Fun Game," is all the rage on the blogs. When one game ends, another seems to begin almost immediately. As usual, I can barely keep up, so I enter what I can and hope for the best. If you're stashing secret BFG contests at the end of a post about the Minnesota Twins manager, I'm probably going to miss it. Out of the string of the four recent Big Fun Games, I've been a part of two. That's just the right speed for me. The BFGs take a fair amount of attention and the BFG needs to learn that it has to get in line behind last-minute work bombshells, dog puke and the overwhelming desire for sleep, just to name a few. Still, I entered another one recently because I landed a Carl Yastrzemski rookie in the last one. I may be overworked, but I refuse to totally ignore the words "big" and "fun". This one was called the "The Lucky 13," organized by Stealing Home at All Trade Bait All The Time . I was...

Why didn't I think of that?

OK, it's been one heck of a busy day with major work and family goings-on all over the place, so let's take a look at the remainder of two of the card packages that I mentioned last night. Each of them featured something interesting that I think I'm going to start doing. First the non-2015 Topps from Kerry from Cards On Cards . This is a four-year-old shiny Kershaw that I didn't have. You don't know how much I appreciate getting Kershaw cards I don't have from years ago. It's as if I beat time itself. See, stupid clock? You may speed by so fast that I don't know what day it is anymore, but I got a parallel from a four-year-old set that nobody bought! HA! Us card collectors remember everything . Da future. You can tell because of all the metal, robot machine imagery in the background. Julio Urias better get on the mound quick before the robot pitchers that can throw 300 mph take over. P.S.: This card is mini, mini and shiny, shiny. I...

The precursor

I don't know why I bag on January so much. After all we did just get rid of college football last night. Also, January is the month when anticipation for the year's baseball cards is at its highest. How can I dislike a month when it signals the arrival of baseball cards? Why just today, Topps said this . Come on, man, despite what you think of Topps' modern baseball card ways, NEW BASEBALL CARDS ARE COMING! IN LESS THAN A MONTH! So what does one do to tide themselves over until then when they've been built into such an anticipation frenzy that they're running around the bedroom nonstop? Well, if you're lucky like me, you get Phungo Cards ever January! Another reason to like this month! I've received Phungo Cards from Phungo for at least the last five years. They are the first cards of the season. You could even call them the precursor to Topps' annual set. Because, like magic, once Phungo Cards arrive, Topps appears shortly afterward. As u...
