More '75 minis! Minis! Minis! Minis! M-m-m-minis!!!!!

It's really a shame that some of you are away from the internet this weekend, because you're missing out on my '75 mini extravaganza. These aren't just any old cards here you know. These are: THE BEST CARDS OF ALL-TIME So, if you're at a ballgame right now, or under a tent in the woods (you poor bastard), I can't help you. I can only hope you'll stumble across this post when you get back. As for the rest of you, you will be rewarded for your non-active lifestyle. And appreciation of electricity. As you know, I've made a recent commitment to the '75 minis, both the Topps Lineage version and the real thing. The pursuit of the real thing is a Long Term Project, but I'm already pleasantly surprised by how available they are -- even if I hardly ever see them at card shows. Right now I have maybe 125 minis from the 1975 set. Once I get done with my "1975 Topps (it's far out, man)" blog, I'll know how many I have for sure. I ...

A change of heart ... maybe

A comment I just received on a post I made a couple of days ago has made me reconsider my view on collecting autographed cards. This post was going to be about the fine cards I received from Rod of Padrographs: A to Z , all for answering an off-handed trivia question on his blog. But I possess only a couple handfuls of autos, and no desire to search for more. Don't get me wrong, I do think they're cool, and I'll gladly accept them. But actively collecting autographed cards takes two things: 1. It takes a kind of personality that I don't have. I will never be the kind of person with the tenacity to ask a player for an autograph at a ball...

Cardboard appreciation: 1975 Topps Herb Washington

(If you stop to think about it for a minute, what we have with this card blogging community is simply an online Mutual Appreciation Society. We all appreciate the same thing: BASEBALL CARDS. It's time for Cardboard Appreciation. This is the 8th in a series): This is an all-time favorite for a lot of people, all because of what it says on that baseball in the lower right corner. That's right: "Pinch Run." (not exactly the abbreviation for Pinch Runner that most people know). It is supposedly the only card ever issued with that position listing. As many people know, Herb Washington was a Charlie O. Finley creation. Washington was a world-class sprinter out of Michigan State, and he became Oakland's "designated runner" during the 1974 season. Washington hadn't played baseball since high school, but that didn't matter because he never came to the plate, nor played the field, during 105 games in the major leagues. As wonderful as the front of the ...
