Blowing my cash on junk

I have some Christmas cash waiting patiently for when I have some time to shop for cards. I do expect to find some rewarding vintage with this money, but I also know more than anything that I will positively spend some of it on junk. I've mentioned this before, but it drives me crazy that I don't have all of the Dodgers cards from that junky era when cards were so ubiquitous that packs were issued with every newborn brought home from the hospital. When a Dodger card from a nationally issued set from the late '80s or early '90s appears, I can tell instantly whether I own it or not. And it's like getting hit with a dart between the eyes when I realize it's a card I don't have. Such was the case when Tom of The Angels, In Order posted every card from a box of 1990 Fleer League Leaders and said they were up for grabs. This was one of the 614 different box sets that Fleer issued during this period and as soon as that Tim Belcher card showed itself on th...

GCRL Dodgers

No, that title does not refer to "Gulf Coast Rookie League" Dodgers. Everyone should know by now that it means " GarveyCeyRussellLopes " Dodgers! Direct from Jim! I always assumed that Jim named his blog in the order of which '70s Dodger infielders he liked the most. Garvey first, then Cey , then Russell, then Lopes. I'm not sure if that's right. But if I were to go by that formula, my name would be " CeyLopesGarveyRussell ." Doesn't have the same ring to it does it? Jim knew what he was doing. Anyway, I got another package from Jim. Since we're fellow Dodgers fans it gets a little difficult to find Dodgers for each other. The Dodgers he sent had about a 40 percent success rate, which is pretty darn good for two guys with a whole mess of Dodgers cards. That's batting .400, you know. I'll be sending some Dodgers back at some point and I'll be lucky to get to that 40 percent mark. So let's take a look at some that t...

The cure for socks

I'm still trying to get over the fact that I got socks for Christmas. SOCKS. Not Red Sox. Not White Sox. Socks. Fabric. And not even of the game-used variety (or at least I hope they aren't). I got socks from two different relatives. I got socks even though I already have way more than I need. I got socks even though the letters "s" "o" "c" and "k" did not appear anywhere together on the entire, very detailed, very specific, very helpful, very "ask me if you have any questions" Christmas list! Fortunately, another blogger -- this time Zach from Autographed Cards -- was there in my time of need. He sent me some Dodgers and they arrived at my door the day after Christmas. Still in a state of "sock shock," I eagerly opened the envelope. Here is what fell out: Two of my 1992 Donruss Dodger needs, Tim Belcher and Bobby Ojeda. I forget that Belcher pitched all the way to the 2000 season. Ojeda, meanwhile, I can't t...
