Making the blog work for me

So, yesterday I wanted to respond to someone with the last time I bought a pack of Topps Chrome. In case you didn't hear, Topps released its 2022 edition of Chrome last week and people are flipping the ef out. I am very glad I'm not in that rat race anymore and just on the chance I could get one person to see the light, I wanted to find out how long it's been since I actually sought out that stuff. I turned to my trusty blog. It's helped in this area countless times. Some bloggers don't have an archive where you can look up past posts or don't have a list of labels. I don't know how they get anything done. I realize there are "now" people on this planet, where only the most recent post matters and anything they've written in the past didn't happen, but I can't comprehend living like that. I need my research. I need to answer questions.   Thanks to the blog, I found out the last time I bought a pack of Chrome was 2019. I didn't end...

Going to call this "vintage week"

I've received a few small envelopes over the last week or so that have included vintage cards. Couple that with the vintage that caused my jaw to drop a couple of weeks ago, I'm in a vintage frame of mind, more so than usual. So I think I'm going to call this "Vintage Week" and show some vintage throughout the week, ending with what will be one hell of a vintage post on Friday (fingers crossed). Not every card will be vintage in these posts, let's face it, not every card I want is vintage. But each post will include at least one vintage card. First, let's set the parameters of what is considered vintage. This is a question that comes up repeatedly. I instinctively think of vintage as any cards that arrived before I knew what a card was. I can do that because I'm old. There will be none of this "my first cards were 1987 so vintage for me is 1986." That idea, to me, is horrifying. The most recent year for which I didn't know what a base...

Living in the high numbers

I made the inaccurate statement the other day that the forgotten Billy Wynne received just two Topps cards in his career and both of them were high numbers. But actually just one of them was a high number. His 1970 Topps card is a "semi-high number" at card No. 618, according to most set checklists. I suppose that doesn't make a difference to some of you, but if you're collecting a set that involves high numbers, it definitely makes a difference. The 1970 Topps high numbers start at No. 634 and Wynne is just 16 cards away from being studied, memorized and having his mug shot posted on every set-collectors' wanted wall. Wynne's appearance made me wonder if there were any players whose cards showed up only in the high numbers, which was a yearly part of Topps sets between 1952-73, with a few exceptions. But obviously Wynne is not eligible now. And as I studied the high numbers my wondering changed to "who has the MOST cards in the high numbers?" I c...
