Cards for a baseball-less day

I'm generally not fond of "cleaning out the draft folder" posts. First, I don't have a lot of "draft posts" going. I pick a topic and write it. There are no half-written posts anywhere in storage. Second, if the cards weren't good enough the first time I scanned them, what makes me think they'll be good enough now ? But desperate times call for lazy measures. In case you haven't noticed, there's been no baseball since Tuesday. Baseball's postseason schedule is almost as irksome as the fact that the game's brass feels the need to speed up games, but won't touch advertisers or broadcast stations that do far more to lengthen games than anything players do on the field. Oh, was that a tangent? Sorry. So we baseball fans are forced to settle for hockey as a suitable alternative until Friday. Those starved for baseball need something to tide them over, and since I have little time to provide something of substance, I figured ...

One day you're up, the next you're down

I'm a little late with this one, but it's been on my mind for awhile, and since both Jim Rice and Manny Ramirez have been in the news recently, I figured this was as good a time as any to spit out my thoughts. Boston is a city I can't figure out. Don't get me wrong. I like the area, I like the team. I'll root for the Red Sox every single time they play the Yankees until my dying day. I've been to both cities, and, man, I can handle Boston so much better. But some of the bizarreness that comes out of that city with regard to the Red Sox confuses the stuff out of me. Perhaps you remember a bit of a flap that erupted from an interview with Jim Rice a little more than a year ago. It was in June of 2008 and the interview was actually a question-and-answer session during a public speaking appearance by Rice. I am especially aware of it because the appearance was in my town. And the person who attended the event and wrote the story that sparked the flap worked for m...

Garage sale finds

Bad news first. I found so many goodies at the garage sale on Friday that I went back again today to add to my stash. But the weather had turned cooler and the folks had closed up shop for the weekend. Oh well. My disappointment was brief, because I liked what I found on Friday. Great stuff. I could stand in front of that guy's file cabinet for a week-and-a-half and find something I want. So here is what I took home. Again, nothing spectacular, but I found it interesting and very useful in the vast card collecting scheme of things. We'll start with the Mike Piazzas. I bought 11 cards, including the 1994 Pacific card up top. I find as a Dodger collector that I have a harder time acquiring Piazza cards than almost any other recent player. I blame the Mets fans for that. So I snapped these up quick. Here is a 1993 Donruss (I can't believe I still need Dodgers from this set), a 1995 Topps cyberstats , a 1994 Stadium Club HR Club member, and a 1993 Triple Play. Next up, som...

He's in!

This post is for my brother, a diehard member of Red Sox Nation since he was 8 years old in 1975, which also happened to be Jim Rice's first full season in major league baseball. Yes, Rice is going to the Hall of Fame. Yes, he deserves it. Yes, it probably should have taken him 15 tries to make the Hall. But there is no question he belongs there. Congratulations, man. Your guy made it! And congrats to Rickey, too. I cannot wait for July 26.
