Night Owl Cards

This week has been unbelievably hectic in the most unexpected ways. From illness, to new computers at work, to a scheduling nightmare that I anticipate lasting at least six weeks, I have been able to dedicate zero time to collecting. All of the posts that have appeared here in the last week have been created under duress. I can't believe I never typed out "I have no time for this" in the middle of one of my sentences, because it has been all that I have been thinking as my fingers tap-tapped the keyboard. As I was rushing inside this afternoon from scrambling to pick up my daughter from school (realizing I was 20 minutes late in doing so), trying to fend off the starved-for-attention dog, and knowing I had to tend to three other things in 10 minutes before I split for work, I threw three card packages -- and another package that contained an actual POSTER -- onto the table for later viewing. This is a pre-emptive strike to anyone who asks: No, I am not collecting 2010 Heritage. I'll take your Dodgers, but that's it. This is not a new concept around here. I  said last year that I've had it with Heritage. And I re-emphasized the point when I said I'm sick of retro sets not named Allen or Ginter. But since Heritage is officially back on the scene , I thought I'd mention it again. It's weird actually. I don't broadcast all the other sets I'm not collecting. It's understood that I have no intention of staring at a full binder of SP or Topps Attax. But Heritage is different. Someone like me -- a set builder who is totally interested in baseball and card-collecting history -- is supposed to be into this set. And I was. But not anymore. At least not until around 2021 when the tribute to the 1971 set comes out. And definitely 2024 when the '75 tribute set goes live. (Yes, I'm assuming a lot there). Like I mentioned before, Her...

Everyone is into the 1960 Topps cards because it's the design Heritage is "borrowing" for its cards this year. Although I'm not collecting Heritage this year (just a few packs here and there), I do like the design. Now that collectors have moved on to the latest and greatest sets, like O-Pee- Chee , Finest and Bowman, I thought I'd return focus to the design and feature some of the Dodgers from the original 1960 set. In case you didn't know, this year is the 50 th anniversary of the Los Angeles' Dodgers first World Series championship , the 1959 champions. A team that Bill James once called "the weakest World Championship team of all time." So, when kids pulled a Dodger card out of their packs in 1960, they were something special.
