Dad's taking the day off

Since this is the one day out of the year when I get to decide things that I want to decide, I decided I didn't want to write much on the blog today. But before I leave for the day, remember the quandary I presented a couple posts ago about those Bazooka sticker cards? Well, with a little help from the comments on that post, it occurred to me -- duh! -- they're stickers! So, I added one other version of these cards that was in the binder, looking very awkward with Phillies and Padres and Braves on it ... ... and then I did this: I feel much better now. To all the dads out there, I hope your Father's Day is also filled with righting wrongs and sticking stickers. Enjoy!

One of these things is not like the others

I'm a team collector. And that means I do things like this to myself. I put cards like this in my binders, which are supposed to be devoted to Dodgers and nothing else. I reconcile the sight of Tigers and Braves and Cardinals appearing in my binder by blaming the card companies for their diabolical schemes in which they put players from opposing teams on the SAME CARD. It places the guilt on their shoulders and absolves me of my own guilt for having non-Dodgers enclosed in a binder of such honor. But team collectors know this scenario well, and both I and they have written many posts about this particular predicament. And that's why, in a matter of days, I received the above card from Max of Starting Nine , as well as this card ... ... and then these two cards from Paul of Paul's Random Stuff ...    I'm telling you, Bazooka was evil. But both Max and Paul know that being the completist that I am, I'm required to have these cards. Even if a Dodge...

Stars and stripes and cards forever

I'm probably not going to be able to do something like this on the 4th of July, so I need to take advantage of my patriotic holidays while I can. It's Memorial Day. The flag is out, the street is blocked so the parade can go through, and everyone will be eating barbecue and pie later while I'm working. I'm trying to keep away the cranky by making a list, which has been a tried-and-true tactic in behavior control since I was a youngster. I thought it might be nice to try to find the most patriotic baseball card sets ever made and then do a countdown. But of course before I do this, I must have rules. Arbitrary rules is another technique that helps me forget about things I can't have, like three-and four- and five-day weekends. The rules in this exercise are: no insert sets or subsets allowed. There are several flag-flying insert/subsets, like the Collector's Choice card featured here. But I want these sets to really go all the way with their patriotism...

All in good time

I am seriously falling behind in my posting. I have a lot to say, but I just can't seem to fit it in. Between work and home life, bippings and lawsuit settlements, I'm struggling to keep up. For instance, I haven't jumped into the Upper Deck/MLB lawsuit settlement fray like many others have. I have my opinion, and I think I'll address it in a roundabout way soon. But when will "soon" be? I have no idea. I'm overdue to add another badass to the "I'm Badass and You're Not" Club. I mean they're going to start hiking membership dues at the club if I don't find a few badasses quick. I've also been meaning to post another Brush With Greatness segment and write about another one of my 100 favorite ballplayers. Meanwhile, the Dodgers have started spring training and I haven't said a damn thing. Some fan I am. But the most visible sign of backlog is the stacks of wax that I've received over the last couple of weeks. T...
