A couple more goodbyes

The latest of the many goodbyes I have made since the loss of my parents doesn't include loved ones or even people I know. Instead, it has to do the with the familiar places in my old hometown. My parents were the last human connections to where I grew up. Most of the people I know from that time scattered to various places long ago. There is no one to visit anymore when I return to the Southern Tier. It's not like I'm going to hang out with my folks' friends. This is a bit sad because I spent the first 20 years of my life in the area. There are many places and spots that mean a lot to me. For example, I walked through the local mall one morning a couple of weeks ago for the first time in a long time just to retrace the steps during one of the greatest three years of my life (1983-85) when I worked at a store in the mall. That store no longer exists. It's now a Burlington Coat Factory. But I entered the store and then found close to the exact spot where I onc...

Contests are for the rested

I don't really enter blog contests anymore. It's not that I don't like winning things. It's just that I don't have the time. I pride myself in trying to read as many card blogs as possible on a daily basis (I have 360 on the blog roll). But it's getting more and more difficult. And the maximum effort that I can guarantee is that I will skim your blog post. I'll get more heavily invested in certain blogs, but on average it's done, done, onto the next one . Especially at this time of year. You should see my daily life. It's a wreck of chaos with me wandering around in a haze as the bombs go off. And you're asking me to take the time out for a contest? Sorry, I'm trying to put out this bonfire with a teaspoon of water. I'll get back to you. So a week or so ago, I was doing my usual blog skimming, trying desperately to keep up, and I happened upon some cavalcade of contests produced by 30-Year-Old Cardboard . Brian, being the generou...

Awesome night card, pt. 20 (and I found Upper Deck 2009!)

(I'm posting the night card early this evening, because I've unearthed Upper Deck 2009 here in the hinterlands! I'll be posting the UD cards in the wee hours after I get out of work -- and if the scanner doesn't die on me). Seriously, Bobby Abreu is better than Juan Pierre. Adam Dunn is better than Juan Pierre. Yeah, both of them have their issues (Abreu's never been the same since the day this photograph was taken, and Dunn strikes out more than I do looking for 2009 Topps). But maybe it's time the Dodgers told Scott Boras to take a walk and signed one of those two guys. McCourt and Colletti will absorb some grief if the Dodgers don't end up with Ramirez. But personally, I think they should stand firm and let Ramirez and the Deathlord come to them. Cause the Dodgers are all they've got. If Abreu or Dunn is in Dodger blue this year. I ain't angry. If Pierre is the starting left fielder, that's another matter. That's it for now. I'll be f...
