Ballpark chatter

I'm at the ballpark tonight, taking in my annual Syracuse Chiefs game. Tonight, they're playing the Norfolk Tides, the Triple A team of the Orioles. Former Dodger prospect Jamie Hoffmann is with Norfolk. Other Tides of interest are former Dodger Dana Eveland, collector favorite Pat Neshek, and Nate McLouth. (Brian Matusz is due to get the start for Norfolk against the dreaded TBA). If I happen to bump into one of them at the concession stand, I'll try to get their autograph. But I don't expect that to happen. And I won't hunt them down either. I like to relax at the game. Sit in my seat, keep score for 3 innings before deciding I'm bored with it, grab a hot dog, and bask in the glory of the best sensory experience on the planet. But what are you poor folks going to do while I'm out enjoying the game? I was nice and found some cards for you to view. These are from Cards on Cards . They were part of a cards-for-cards and periodical-for-periodical...

A rant about the Marlins (hey, at least it's not more Allen & Ginter)

I just got finished with a long day of summer vacation stuff and I was looking forward to playing Allen & Ginter Box Buster Bingo over at Crackin' Wax . Unfortunately, the internet was down for like an hour and now I'm beating on the door at CW seeing if they'll let in someone over an hour late, but having no success. So, trade post it is!!!! It was either that or finding something interesting in my latest A&G purchases. And while I look at people who moan about A&G the same way I look at that one person who says "but I don't like chocolate," I will be nice and lay off the A&G for at least one post. I received a stack of Dodger cards from my good man, The Cardboard Don , recently. As you know, he's a Marlins fan. He even stuck this card of Ozzie Guillen -- the current Marlins manager -- in with the Dodgers. I like Ozzie. I've said that before . I know he says stupid stuff. I know he ticks people off. I don't care. I st...

Heritage days

The second part of the package I received from smed is a puzzler. It's a heaping helping of Heritage from '09 and '10, two sets that depict two of my favorite Topps designs from the distant past. But how to present cards from two years ago that everyone has seen? How to find something new to say? Combine that with my hectic schedule this week and I couldn't exactly sit in the middle of the room until an idea arrived. I was flummoxed. Ah, what the hell: Words are overrated. Any jackass can write a sentence. Thanks, smed. (P.S.: Those of you thinking that it had to take longer to scan those cards than to come up with a topic obviously don't have a blog). (P.P.S: Those aren't even all the cards). (P.P.P.S: In light of my recent declaration that I'm more of a team collector, especially with modern-day sets, I don't know how I reconcile that with receiving 400 Heritage cards).

Team colors: Royals

I traded for this card on the Million Card Giveaway site yesterday. It's a nice card for a Dodger fan to have because Campanis is obviously wearing a Dodger uniform, hastily half-airbrushed away by Topps. Topps probably figured it didn't have to do much art work because the expansion Royals' uniforms looked a lot like the Dodgers' uniforms. That also explains why I occasionally receive Royals cards in the Dodgers lots that arrive in the mail. The Royals, as you may know, are the last team to come back from a 3-1 World Series deficit to win the Series. It happened in 1985 against the Cardinals. And I want it to happen again very much. Using these "team colors" posts as a way to fire up the team that I want to win haven't worked so well, but that's not stopping me. There is no way I'm featuring the Giants when they're bidding for a World Series title. It'll be bad enough that I have to write a happy headline for Tuesday's paper a...

The worst card of 2010: contestant #3

On Mother's Day, a face only a mother could love. Well, it's not really the face. It's more the facial expression. It's all in the timing, Topps. The professional photographers that I know would have hit the "delete" button.

The authoritative card show report

Since the majority of you would like to see the cards that I bought at last weekend's card show in one monster post, then that is what I will do. You've been warned. The intent is to display them all on this one post and in chronological order according to how I obtained them. It's going to be long. Grueling, even, if  you don't like reliving people's card show experiences. But I'm betting on a few people enjoying it. Now, I've got a work day ahead of me, so who knows if I'll even get to everything. If this post ends in mid-sentence, then you know why. I'll pick up the rest of the report in the next post. This show is one of three each year that operates at the state fairgrounds site. There are a number of buildings on site and while the card collectors' show is going on, there are always other events, too -- horse shows, craft shows, gun shows (I can't get past how disturbing "gun show" sounds). The collectors' show ...
