Wrapping up World Series week

Just one more World Series-related post to finish off the week. I can tell by the views that people no interested in my Series discussions, but I wouldn't be a fan if I didn't write about my team when it gets to the championship and wins. What am I supposed to do, discuss Topps Update? That's what the offseason is for.   I don't know when the next time the Dodgers will reach the World Series will be (and judging by some fans' typical reactions, I may not want to write about them if they win again next year), so I'm taking advantage.   This post will tie up some loose ends and thoughts about the Series.   First off, I need to mention "the blob" and "the king of the hill" on this post. Long-time readers will know that "the blob" is the player that makes the last out in the World Series. It comes from when I was a kid and me and my brother would determine "the blob" each year. I most-recently updated the World Series blobs ...

Another "Blob" update, plus the "King of the Hill" (RIP, Bruce Sutter)

Regular readers may have been wondering where my "If I Was King Of The Postseason" post was this year. I decided I'm not continuing that tradition after the little bit of crankiness that arose after my post in the series last year. Normally I don't let something like that affect content, but I was tiring of the series anyway. It takes a long time to do for what's essentially the same thing every year. I don't know, if anyone misses it, I can pick it up next year. Instead, this year I'm calling back to a post I did long ago , and also updated long ago . It was my research on which player made the final out of the World Series, something my brother and I called "The Blob" when we were kids. I had listed every "Blob" for every series to that point and then I added to the updated post through the 2016 World Series. That's where it stopped. In looking back on those posts, I found a couple of errors. Also, the formatting is off, as happ...

Updating the blob

Heh, I bet you thought I made a mistake and meant to write "updating the BLOG," didn't you? Nope, I really did mean "blob." Those of you who were captive readers about a year-and-a-half ago, know that I have written about the blob  before . And you know that the term has nothing to do with the 1950s horror movie or its remake. But since I used the poster for the original movie on the last post, I might as well update things here with the '80s remake. What "the blob" refers to is our childhood term for the player who makes the last out of baseball game. That player is The Blob. In that original post, I referred to the Ultimate Blob. The "UB" is the player who makes the final out in the World Series. The original post then featured a rundown of all of the players who have suffered that horrible fate. Two World Series have gone by since that post, and I think it's time to rerun the list with the two most recent players who ar...

The blob

This has nothing to do with the movie, its sequel, or an all-consuming force from outer space. Instead, this is about two boys, their interest in baseball, and their silly fascination with failure. As boys, we would play baseball almost every day that we could. And when we couldn't, we would make up baseball games, whether it was in the backyard or with a pencil, piece of paper and a pair of dice. But we couldn't get through these games without injecting some humor into the proceedings. Specifically, we became interested in the player who makes the last out of a game. To my brother and I, that person was the ultimate example of failure. Here was a person entrusted with a team's last gasp, and he goes and robs his own teammates of their final breath. No one wanted to be this person. It was such a horrible fate that we had to come up with a name for someone who would fail in such a fashion. For a reason that I will never know, we called that person "The Blob." ...
