My storybook binder, part 2

When we last left the Storybook Binder, the plethora of Dodger cards from the '90s and '00s had transformed into very recent Dodger wants and set needs. I have the other half of the binder, which @ grogg sent, to show here, but there is one thing I forgot to display in the first post. This is the side of the binder. Greg inserted a 1975 Topps Garry Maddox card into the opening. This is the sign of a faithful reader and a thoughtful gift-giver. Not only is the '75 Topps set my favorite, but if you've read the 1975 Topps (it's far out, man) blog, you know how much that particular Maddox card means to me, and meant to me as a child. Very cool. OK, let's turn the page to the next story in the binder. I left off with a page of 2015 Topps Series 2 wants and here is the other full page of wants from that set. By the way, I've accumulated quite a stack of dupes from 2015 Topps. If you need any, let me know. The 2015 wants morph into 2014 Al...

Possibly the worst set for inserts ever

I have purchased exactly one blaster in 2011 so far. It wasn't even a blaster of 2011 product. It was a blaster marked down to $5.99. How can you pass up a blaster for $5.99? It was a box of 2007 Topps Updates & Highlights. I bought a few packs of those, but not a lot. So I thought this would be a nice nostalgia trip, combined with grabbing a few cards that I had never seen. The base cards were fun. Eric Gagne as a Red Sox, a rookie Kevin Slowey, somebody named Rocky Cherry. You can't beat 10 packs for 6 bucks. But the inserts? Let's just say I don't ever want to hear anyone complain about Topps' 2011 inserts again. Here is what passed for inserts in 2007: Goody. Swell. Yippee. Joy. I also pulled the Bonds card at the top of the post, which I suppose if you were brainless enough to collect the entire Bonds HR set is the card to get since it commemorates the downfall of baseball as we know ... er, I mean the crowning of a new home run leade...

The problem with the '90s

I am here to alert you to a fine weekly baseball card feature on the most excellent Baseball-Reference.com Blog. I'll let the astute Andy do the rest of the talking about it: --------------------------------------------------------------------- From Andy at Baseball-Reference.com: The Baseball-Reference.com Blog has a new weekly feature covering baseball cards: http://www.baseball-reference.com/blog/archives/category/card-of-the-week Click on that link to call up the relevant posts. We would like to feature some of the excellent card blogs out there. If you would like to participate, please email me at 88topps at gmail dot com to direct me to one or two posts on your blog that you would like to have highlighted. It doesn't matter if they are recent or old, but they must contain scans of the front and back of a card that can be used on our blog (minimum size 400 pixels by 285 pixels.) If I choose to use your scans as the basis of a post, I will credit your b...

Oh, no!

I didn't think it could happen here. I mean, I've heard stories . They say it's getting more frequent. Things aren't the way they used to be. But I live in a safe area. People look out for each other. Not in my neighborhood, I thought. Things are different here. Then I received a package in the mail. There was something wrapped in plain, white paper. I opened it and looked at the top card: Gah ! Big Head Barry? Why would someone want to send me that? Little did I realize that this was just the start. Yes, there is something worse -- much worse -- than a single Bowman Barry Bonds card. Because one Bonds card is only a warning ... SEVEN Bowman Barry Bonds cards is a BIPPING . I've been bipped ! By Barry! Barry bipped me! The horror! I can feel my head growing already. I feel mean and whiny and self-centered. Joe Morgan is starting to defend me on the air. There's a guy in jail who is refusing to talk about me. I'm wearing a giant elbow protector and I DON...

Awesome night card, pt. 50

On this day, I show a card featuring Barry Bonds and call it "awesome." Because that, my friends, is not letting the terrorists win. To those innocents lost on Sept. 11, 2001, I will never forget you. To those who lost loved ones, whether family members or dear friends, I will never forget you. To those who answered the call of duty and perished, I will never forget you. We live on in your honor that you will never be forgotten. God bless you all.

My '91s and me

First a note about the latest "Define the Design" post. I said it was going to be a toughy, didn't I? No one really came up with an ideal description for the 1990 Upper Deck set -- probably because it is "the most boringest boring bore of boredom set," to partially quote dayf. So, for now, I'm going with my "green-and-gold racing stripe set" definition on the sidebar. If anyone comes up with something better, let me know. But you won't win cards for it now. As for the 1991 Upper Deck set, a few people came up with a similar definition that works pretty well. The design seems to suggest the path from second base to home plate. The person who came up with that first is David from Topps Tribe . I'll be using his "Score From Second" description in the "Define the Design" sidebar, and he wins a stack of '91 Upper Deck cards! David, email me your address, and I'll send you some 2009 Upper Deck as well. OK, speakin...
