I have my reasons

This morning, I sent off my "response" to the cards I received from Matt during the most recent Diamond Jesters Time Travel Trade . That means I can post what I got, guilt-free.   Often when I claim cards from the vast Time Travel inventory they are not related to any set I'm chasing and rarely Dodger-oriented. In fact there's seemingly no rhyme or reason to why I chose them, like I'm randomly gobbling them up. But there is always a reason. Always.    Let's see what those reasons are, unveiled in beautiful backlit words for the whole world to see. I shall go chronologically:     1964 Topps Jerry Adair   Probably no need to justify picking up a vintage card, but 1964 has never been on my list to complete. I wanted this rough-and-ready version of the Jerry Adair card because this card is one of the ones I picked up at a card show 11 years ago that featured written updates on the fronts. My copy includes "+SS" written in pen underneath 2nd base. ...

It's not even my birthday

Last month I mentioned a bunch of people who share my birthday and figured out whether they have their own cards. I came up with quite a few and a mini-collection was born. I decided to grab a card here and there of those born on July 16. I don't know if I want to fill another binder with another collection -- that whole space issue, you know. But getting something every once in awhile sounded fun. Well, supertrader Doug from Sportscards From The Dollar Store beat me to the punch. He has his own birthday collection and it's pretty robust . He got me started down that same path with a bunch of 7/16ers, many for which I've never owned a card or even heard of in some cases. It's not my birthday anymore and won't be for a long time. But let's see some other people who's birthday isn't for a long time, too, straight from The Dollar Store, I'm assuming: I'll start with the most famous first. These happen to be the first three Barry Sand...

Other people with the best birthdate ever

It's that time again. Today's my birthday. My birthdays come around enough on this blog that I've pretty much covered every major leaguer who shares my birthday. There aren't a lot of them, particularly of name players. To recap, the most famous player also born on July 16 is Shoeless Joe: After that, there is quite a drop. The most notable player after Joe Jackson born today is Terry Pendleton: Pendleton never played for teams I liked, but he did win an MVP award and I've always given him a pass because of what is on the back of his 1987 Topps card: A childhood rooting for the Dodgers is a happy childhood. Beyond that, the most remembered players born today are New York Giants pitcher Larry Jansen, volatile Cubs manager Lee Elia, well-traveled relief pitcher Eddie Fisher, and Dodgers catcher and Koufax-whisperer Norm Sherry. But I've covered all of that before, and I have cards of most of the players born on my birthday (but not all...
