Supplier of cards ... and babes

All right, I didn't get much response from yesterday's post, so I'm not going to believe anybody ever again when they cry about how kids don't collect anymore. I showed you that they did and obviously it's not that interesting to you. Granted, you might need to have kids and have been collecting for quite awhile to appreciate what the big deal was. So I thought I'd write about something else -- to which almost every male can relate: Babes. Yeah, you're interested now, huh? All I have to do is flash a picture of a pretty girl. I can read you like USA Today. Max from Starting Nine sent me another card package recently. He does a good job of finding stuff that I like and need. I've written plenty about that and you'll see those cards in a minute. But he also does a pretty good job of finding a pretty woman for me now and then. Yes, I'm happily married, and, no, he's not sending me actual women , no need to panic. But this doesn...

Even when it's not about Bryce, it's about Bryce

There was some bit of nonsense about a Topps Heritage High Numbers checklist bubbling on the twitters earlier today. I didn't pay much attention, because the thing is still 100 bucks for 100 cards. Topps decided to show one of the autographs from the set. As you know each box of 100 cards comes with an autograph. This particular autograph that Topps showed was Bryce Harper. Of course. You were expecting Edinson Volquez? I promptly turned my attention to the stacks of baseball cards on my card desk and picked up some cards I received from Brian at Cardnomics . He had opened a bunch of Update, was just as unimpressed as I was, and sent some Dodgers my way. The Jerry Hairston card interested me in particular because I simply had to figure out what play was on the card. I thought it'd be pretty easy to do. I didn't have a lot of time on my hands and sometimes this photo detective work gets tedious and time-consuming. For some reason, I thought this game was against t...

What black borders can do for you

Every year at this time, I kind of wander aimlessly through the card aisle. I never have very much money between August and December. That fact, combined with the tail end of the card collecting season, leaves me uninspired when purchasing new product. Mostly, I turn toward vintage and team-set efforts at this time. But there's always a part of me that MUST have something to rip periodically. Despite my aimlessness, I manage to find something each year at this time that piques my interest that didn't necessarily interest me the first time around. This year it's Topps Heritage blister packs. Yeah, I'm a sucker for the black borders. I've grabbed a few, not too many. But it's re-ignited my interest in the overall Heritage set. I know I disparaged 2012 Heritage when it first came out because I'm not crazy about the 1963 Topps design. But here's the thing: when you stack it up against what else is out there -- Topps base (uninspired design on super-...

Just a reminder of what dads can do

If you're a dad, like me, you probably don't want to be bothered today. That's my No. 1 request for today. Don't bother me. If you want to get me gifts, fine. If you want to tell me I'm great or that you love me, fine. If you want to do all the chores I usually do, fine. But, really, all I want is -- and don't take this personally -- is not to be bothered. Today, I plan to eat. I plan to sleep. I plan to watch baseball. I would like to get through the day without doing anything else. That would be a terrific Father's Day. Because, you see, dads spend just about every other day of the year being bothered. I know I do. Here are just some of the things that bother me: My job, my health, my folks, my neighbors, my boss, my computer, my computer at work, my taxes, my house, my car, my other car, my driveway, my garage, my dog, my inability to get anything done no matter how hard I try A few other things that bother me: The 48 million passwords I m...
