Feeding frenzy

Uh, oh. Here they come. Better put on my game face. MEDIA: Mr. Night Owl! Mr. Night Owl! Night Owl! Over here! Do you have time for a few questions? Just a few Mr. Owl. ME: About what? MEDIA: Manny Ramirez! ME: Ah, geez . OK. Just a few. MEDIA: How do you feel about his return to the Dodgers lineup tonight? ME: I don't know. I like it? MEDIA: But are you mad at him for what he did? Will you boo him when he comes up the plate? ME: Um, no. I don't boo Dodgers. I'm not mad. I was mad. But, I don't know, uh ... hey, where's Erin Andrews? MEDIA: What? ME: Erin Andrews. She said she'd be here. She said she wanted to meet Night Owl. MEDIA: Uh, she couldn't come. I think she had to cover the Shaq press conference. ME: Her loss. MEDIA: Since you're not mad anymore does that mean you condone what Manny Ramirez did? ME: No, I don't condone it. I'm not even sure if I know what he did. MEDIA: Do you feel as if Ramirez should explain what he ...

Break time

We are holding a garage sale today. There are all kinds of questionables pulling up to the house. The dog has been whining all day. I want it to be over quickly. So I'll post some cards I received in a couple of trades to take my mind off the proceedings. The first are from Rob of Voice of the Collector . I keep sending him 20 th anniversary Upper Deck cards, and instead of sending me something appropriate back, like a restraining order or anthrax, he sends me Dodgers! I received several Topps Attax cards. I may or may not have the whole set of Dodgers by now (aside from all the foil variations). I have no idea if there is a checklist for these cards. I like this card because Lowe is wearing the patriotic Dodgers cap. I believe it's from his 4 th of July start from last year. Appropriately, it was in San Francisco, where it seems just about all of Lowe's Dodger card photos were taken. Lowe got the win even after giving up five runs in five innings. Russell M...

Paddling as fast as I can

Who was the first person to come up with "The days are just packed" saying? Was that from the "Calvin and Hobbes" comic strip compilation? Or did Mr. Watterson take it from somewhere else? At any rate, it accurately sums up things around here. The busy season at work and at home is winding down, so now I'm trying to catch up. I have lots of card packages to blog about and lots of trades to straighten out. One request: if you don't have a want list on your blog yet, please, please, think about adding one. My brain is getting older by the minute and without a want list to check, I lose track of exactly what everyone needs. That's especially true with certain teams, like the Mets and Red Sox and Orioles, in which I'm dealing with multiple fans. (Meanwhile, I'm trying to add to my want list bit by bit to hopefully give all you friendly folks a few more options). I'll be sending out a couple packages later today, a few more later this week ...

Attax, yes, with an "x"

So, today I traveled again to the big box epicenter in my town in my continuing quest to find Heritage retail packs. I found nothing. Neither store had any 2009 blasters either, of any variety -- darkened, grayed-backed, regular or extra crispy. So I walked away with the only thing that I haven't seen on any blog yet -- yes, two pax of '09 Topps Attax. Stop laughing. I get the distinct impression that some people don't consider Topps Attax collectible cards. That it's just a silly kids' game. Well, first of all, I don't know any kids who play cards. Most of the people I knew who played cards are no longer with us. I have a hard time believing, even with the online connection, that it's a big kids draw. But aside from that, they're pretty much like any other cards. Picture of the player and the team name. Yeah, the card back is direct from your grandmother's gin rummy deck, but I like the simplicity. And how often these days do you see a Topps wrapper...
