Square pegs and PWE bombs

The trouble with trying to make a trade post more than a trade post is I always end up with leftover cards that don't fit into whatever topic I am addressing. They are square pegs (no, I never watched the show) that are significant on their own but are unable to conform to the latest discussion on this blog. To go along with that, there have been an abundance of one-card plain white envelope packages arriving -- what folks are calling PWE bombs -- but it's difficult to write one-card posts all the time. These are all items that are more than worthy of showing and I definitely don't want to ignore the fact that someone sent them to me. So let's have a look at what has been messing up my card desk and undermining my 2013 mission to stay on top of card clutter. I'd recommend not clicking away to something else. There's some good and varied stuff here. This is yet another card from Jaybarkerfan's Junk . It is my first relic card of former Dodgers s...

Self-sabotage

In my last post, I touched on the futility of being a team collector, that no matter how hard you try, you're not going to be able to get every card that features your team. There are many reasons for this, the most daunting of which may be the 80 jillion sets that are issued every year. ("Variety" and "choice" can be a double-edged sword). But one of the other reasons is one that I hadn't considered all that seriously until last week. And that reason getting in the way of completing my team sets? It's me. I try very much to be a diligent collector. I catalog cards, I create want lists. I organize my cards every few months. I think I do a pretty good job. I've read several times about how folks have forgotten about packs they bought and discovered them months later. I could never figure out how someone could not know they had unopened cards in their possession. But then I had an epiphany last week. And I realized that my problem isn't that I f...

I have connections

This is my first cut signature card. I suppose if I'm going to own a cut signature card it should be of my favorite player of all-time, right? This card came to me from Dan, who as you all know runs Saints of the Cheap Seats . He picked it up at The National. What a guy. One of the many great things about having a blog and collecting cards is you build connections like this. There was no way I was going to be able to go to The National. I didn't even ask anyone to get me anything there. Yet, I ended up with this card. Wow. This is a Fleer card from 2002. I was totally unaware that they were doing cut signatures back then. I do not follow cards like this. I've said before the concept of cut signatures baffles me. I do not believe in destroying other signed cards or historical documents to create cut signatures. And I do not understand why people go ga - ga over them. I'm trying to figure out what Ron Cey signed that Fleer then cut up and pasted into this card. It ha...
