Portion Control - I Staggered Mentally [DE-085 USA 2015 24-Bit FLAC] Originally released as a vinyl album on In Phaze Records (CP 007) in 1982. Hats off to the Dark Entries label for this stellar repress which sounds superb. I posted my original 1982 pressing about five years ago on the old ESWA blog and in my opinion this sounds better. The promise shown on the early Portion Control tape packages is realised as the band mature from low fidelity home recordings to hard rhythmic electronics generated in the studio. The Portion Control sound has evolved in parallel to that of their peers, especially Cabaret Voltaire. On first listen, many would think this is a Cabs album with treated vox electronica and distorted sampling, but tracks like All Present And Correct and Fiends sound quite different to where the Cabs were in 1982 using very early acid beats. Portion Control's direction was now facing east ...to more European influences. Having said that, Mass Disorder would...

Parade Ground - The Golden Years [DE-018 USA 2011 24-Bit FLAC] Brussels duo, Parade Ground were assisted by Front 242's Patrick Codenys and Daniel B in honing their post-punk gloominess into tight synthwave through the mid-eighties. Wire's Colin Newman was also drafted in to produce tracks for their important Dual Perspective EP ...those tracks feature on this 2011 compilation album. New listeners will likely enjoy the melodic Took Advantage (here in its full 12" length) and the Colin Newman produced Moan which hints as a mix of early OMD and Talk Talk. Parade Ground's best known single, Strange World also features to round off what is a fine examination of what the duo did in the studio, rather than an attempt to compile a "best of...". Parade Ground still perform around Europe and you can pick up reissues & merchandise here . Enjoy. A1 I Shut My Eyes A2 Moan On The Sly A3 Retired A4 Fall Incognito A5 Moral Support ...

Car Crash Set - Join The Car Crash Set [ANNA 016 DEU 2014 24-Bit FLAC] I featured Kiwi synthpopsters Car Crash Set on the old blog a few years ago and posted donated rips of some of their rare releases which all had a great reception. Here is a fine compilation released on German synthwave reissue label Anna Logue Records in 2008 and 2014. Some of the tracks are clearly mastered to vinyl from demo cassettes so don't expect tip-top fidelity on all tracks, instead expect some superb Antipodean new wave synthpop. The track Fall From Grace is a personal favourite & will stand out to many, for very obvious reasons. A1 Hit And Run A2 Outsider A3 Toys A4 Heart Of Stone (Demo) B1 Another Day (Demo) B2 Heart Of Stone B3 Dreams B4 Fall From Grace

Luckily the Dark Entries label picked up the rights for most of the back catelogue a few years back. There seems to be some confusion on the band's roots, some sites say German, others Belgian - I suspect this could mean they come from the small German speaking areas of eastern Belgium but will be gladly corrected if somebody can muster the evidence.  Sandy Eyes would have been a great Factory Benelux single however it was saved for the home market and not shared by Les ...

Various ‎- Merry Christmas [TWI 450 BEL 1984 24-Bit FLAC] If you know your Crépuscule compilations. you'll know that most have re-released in a variety of differing guises with different tracks in differing sleeves for different territories. One that has never reappeared is Merry Christmas . This mini album, in a classic Belgian  bande dessinée sleeve, has never surfaced again since it's limited run out in Belgium in 1984.  Whilst many of you obscure chaps will be attracted to the very rare Current 93 track, for me it's all about the full version of Soft Verdict's The Fosse which runs at nearly eight minutes. The tracks is atmospheric and choral, and whilst the obligatory sleigh bells are missing, I can think of nothing more charming to welcome in this dark & cold Christmas Eve. As a bonus you also get Louis Phillipe and and his Arcadians covering Write Your Letter in their own inimitable way, a Thick Pigeon rarity and a topical number from Alan Ranki...

What's My Mission Now?

Gary Clail's Tackhead Sound System ‎- Tackhead Tape Time [TACKLP 1 UK 1988 24-Bit FLAC] Back in 2012, this album was one of my earliest attempts at a 24-bit rip. To be honest, it was not my greatest work of mastering from vinyl. It is time to put that right with an all new 2018 rip ready to pound from your speakers. This album came out just after the original Tackhead signed to EMI. Bristol-based MC & builder, and On-U-Sound cohort Gary Clail overdubs the band's early singles with samples and rambles. Clail was essentially the sixth member of Tackhead and was to appear on the Reality , Half Cut For Confidence and Hard Left singles. Loud dubby cut-ups and noisy heavy beats are the rule of thumb here - it is a dark tribute to the angst and despair of an eighties Thatcherite Britain. It is industrial body beats from a generation who watched the industry and invention being sucked out of their country. It is a powerful reminder of how this era spawned some of t...

Solid Wax

Soulwax - Belgica (Original Soundtrack) [PIASR 430DLP BEL 2017 24-Bit FLAC] It's okay to have a sneaking admiration for Soulwax. As these Belgians developed their sound from nineties indie rock to intelligent dance music (a term I personally dislike), many got lost along the way ...should we be surprised? Their last few albums sound as if they have been crafted on a mac and did little to inspire me.  The missing link is Belgica , the soundtrack of a film of the same name, in which director Felix van Groeningen dives into the seedy side of Gent (or is that Gand) nightlife and club culture. You may not know that Soulwax come from Gent (or is it Ghent), so were prime candidates for the soundtrack. What you get is not what you expect for a movie soundtrack and on first examination you may think this is a compilation album, it is not, in fact every artist is Soulwax in a variety of genres and band names. The Shitz anybody? From indie pop to acid Cajun to Baklav...

There is a tiny pressing flaw on side A of my Salvation 12" which causes a short skip. Oddly the label overlooked allocating a unique FAC number to the whole package.

Creative Marketing in 8 Dimensions

Image
Sudden Sway - Sing Song [NEG 18 V1-8 UK 1985 24-Bit FLAC] Back in 1986, this art-pop duo signed to Geoff Travis managed Warners imprint Blanco Y Negro for their first major release. Having previously teased us with hard to find independent releases and a couple of Peel sessions, Sudden Sway decided to completely confuse the world by releasing 8 different versions, recordings and interpretations of the same song. Each version came in what appeared to be the same sleeve, and each was only discernable from subtle catelogue number differences ie. NEG18V1 - NEG18V8. The A side of each 7" was colour coded to indicate each version and the buyer had to revert to the colour chart on the sleeve to decypher it! This was no major label marketing ploy as Blanco Y Negro ensured that the singles were not evenly distributed and quite difficult to track down. Some of us were stupid enough to collect all eight! The b-side was the same on each, the truly bizarre and funny, Creative M...

Laibach - Across The Universe [12 MUTE 91 UK 1988 24-Bit FLAC] Some may recall a perverse campaign to get Laibach's cover of Across The Universe to the Christmas No.1 in the UK. As we approach Christmas 2018, here's a 24-bit vinyl rip from that very single to get you in the mood for the festive season. Some may find the Germanic cover of Maggie Mae on the flip side to be the ideal musical accompaniment to all those office parties and family gatherings. Emotional Punchbags

Image
In Embrace - Too [GLALP 004 UK 1983 24-Bit FLAC] I'd love to do a whole feature on Glass Records. This UK independent label was responsible for some damn fine product during it's relatively short existence but most have eluded my clutches. One of their more important and prolific acts were In Embrace, whose evocative approach to pop music failed to catch the ear of many an alternative music listener in the eighties mainly because many record shops overlooked them. With close links to Eyeless in Gaza and the early Cherry Red stable, lead voice Gary Knight surpassed comparable acts such as The Associates with his emotional mix of synthpop and arty acoustic independent pop music. After three albums and eight singles In Embrace were gone. This is their second album, long deleted and never repeated - I for one label Emotional Punchbag and Love Among The Crumbs as forgotten indie-pop classics. Various - Heures Sans Soleil (2016 Edition) [CY 998W7 ITA 2016 24-Bit FLAC] Originally released on the fledgling Les Temps Modernes label in the winter of 1985. Boutique label bedroom self indulgence or relevant collection of the post-punk avantgarde...? The Heures Sans Soleil compilation marked a significant landmark in my musical exploration. Attracted by Factory faves Section 25 and Crispy Ambulance, plus the need to hear more from Adi Newton's Anti-Group and the funky A Primary Industry, I parted with my hard earned dosh at a small independent store just south of Guildford, Surrey. The music contained intrigued and encapsulated me, the diversity was extremely rich ...from twisted loops of The Anti-Group through to the obtuse Polish folk of Mazowsze and the wonderful melancholy of The Happy Family, I was drawn in. Section 25 give us the full introduction of New Horizons, backed up by the dour Hold Me , Manchester's Dislocation Dance take us on a delightful d...

Various ‎- The Fruit Of The Original Sin [TWI 035 BEL 1981 24-Bit FLAC] I own the original 1981 pressing of this compilation and chose to use this version for the rip. The tracks are mastered quietly onto the vinyl, so I have posted this album 'as is' without any increase in volume or normalisation, so expect a little surface noise between each track. Any pops and clicks have been removed individually to preserve audio integrity. Hope you enjoy the results of my work. Psyche'd Out

Image
Psyche - Mystery Hotel [Ltd LP + 12" ROSE 145 FRA 1988 24-Bit FLAC] Canadians Darrin and Stephen Huss formed Psyche in Edmonton during 1982. Initially their music could be described as dark-synth, however by the middle of the decade they injected a little more synthpop and the third album, Mystery Hotel in their most accessible. More successful in Europe than their native Canada, the brothers moved to France and then Germany where they built a solid following.  If there was a Mute Records sound then Psyche had it, though oddly never found their way onto the label. Mystery Hotel is ten solid and catchy uptempo slices of eighties synthpop drawing on British influences from Depeche Mode, New Order, Soft Cell and Erasure. My copy includes a bonus 12" EP of live recordings but as these were based around backing tapes, the studio work is a better representation of their music. Psyche's problem was that they were always slightly behind the curve musically and whilst ...

Medium Trance

Image
C Cat Trance - C Cat Trance [RFM 19 UK 1983 24-Bit FLAC] On first listen to C Cat Trance's debut you'd think they came from Sheffield - they certainly have that Hula/Chakk/Slab! hard indie funk vibe which is always appreciated here. C Cat Trance (as daft a name as any) actually came from Nottingham and were fronted by former Medium Medium funkster John Rees Lewis. With a career spanning six singles and four albums, Rees was highly productive blending Middle Eastern/North African textures to his work with some credible success.  With huge thanks to Rob . Good Friends?

Brilliant - That's What Good Friends Are For... [LIME 7-001 UK 1982 24-Bit FLAC] Youth departed Killing Joke after what appeared to have been a monumental fallout and went on to form Brilliant and Empty Quarter, in which he flirted with dance music. Good Friends was the first Brilliant single and is considered as a tribute to his former friends in Killing Joke, which ironically features Paul Ferguson on drums. The a-side is very Killing Joke, however the b-side hints at a move into indie-pop-funk, a genre in which Brilliant were eventually set out their stall. A1 Good Friends B1 Push

Noise Boys

Image
The Tiller Boys - Big Noise From The Jungle [7" ORG 3 UK 1980 24-Bit FLAC] One of my first ever rips from back in the earliest days of ESWA gets a 24-bit re-rip. A name we should all know from various Factory posters and their gigs with Joy Division, yet their only product was released on New Hormones  ....though it was rumoured to have been scheduled as an early Factory release.  The Tiller Boys were Pete Shelley (guitars), Eric Random (noises) and Frank Cookson (drums). This self-produced 7" EP is a collection of three messy instrumentals, each of them totally annoying in its own particular way. The b-side annoyingly plays at 33rpm and is ripped here pops, crackle, noise and all. A1 Big Noise From The Jungle B1 Slaves And Pyramids B2 What Me Worry?

Fun Specialists

Image
Club Tango - Performance [TUX 7 UK 1981 24-Bit FLAC] I first came across Club Tango's Performance in a box of a friend's seven singles many many moons ago. They subsequently appeared on one of the Messthetics D.I.Y. compilations and their singles became quite sought after.  Both were picked up recently from an internet sale and are in great nick. Two singles are their total output and little else is known about these post-punk funksters except that they include Alex Turnbull from 23 Skiddoo and music journalist Dave Henderson in their line-up. Henderson also ran the excellent Dining Out Records label. A1 Performance B1 Fun Specialists

Ghoulish Practices

Image
Concrete - Ghoulish Practices [CON 001 UK 1981 24-Bit FLAC] Concrete were Andrew E. Beer, Robert Taylor and Ian Crowe, they self-released just one EP on their own Concrete Productions label in 1981 before Crowe left, and they then became indie-funk pioneers 400 Blows. Ghoulish Practices is a four track 7" EP of twisted, horn driven, post-punk funk intermingled with tape loops, percussion and inane lyrical prose.  A1 Farming Today A2 Mass 2 B1 Steven Judy B2 Uranium Plant

Gardening In The Rain

Image
John Foxx - The Garden [V 2194 UK 1981 24-Bit FLAC] More pristine vinyl ripped from Penguinflight's boxes of delights. Mr. Foxx didn't enjoy the same commercial success as his former band mates in Ultravox, however he did maintain the credibility grounds with a string of quality releases including this, his second album which should be highly revered by all.  A1 Europe After The Rain A2 Systems Of Romance A3 When I Was A Man And You Were A Woman A4 Dancing Like A Gun A5 Pater Noster B1 Night Suit B2 You Were There B3 Fusion / Fission B4 Walk Away B5 The Garden

No More Zeros

Image
Martin Hannett & Steve Hopkins ‎- All Sorts Of Heroes [FKSP 014 2018 24-Bit FLAC] Sounding more like a seventies porno soundtrack, All Sorts Of Heroes was recorded in 1976 as the soundtrack for a short animated film of the same name. Hannett & Hopkins unleash a barrage of hard cheesy funk onto the a-side and back it up with a more sublime flipside, much akin to The Durutti Column circa 1981. A1 All Sorts Of Heroes B1 Scandinavian Wastes The film itself has found its way onto You Tube . If you want to hear more of this kind of stuff, point your browsers ..and your Paypal accounts here .

Twist'n'Shout

Image
Xymox - Twist Of Shadows [839 233-1 UK 1989 24-Bit FLAC] Recently remastered and reissued in the USA, here's an original 1989 pressing of this well received Xymox album for comparison. I'd be interested to hear your thoughts. Ripped from penguinflight 's pristine original vinyl copy, Twist Of Shadow s marked the commercial (major label) debut of those former members of Clan Of Xymox, reverting to just plain Xymox. Despite this album being much more synth-poppy than the 4AD releases, it is a bloody good listen as our Dutch friends clearly have a better ear for a good tune than many of their British post-goth contemporaries. This flawless platter was a joy to rip and the sound quality is second to none when compared to other vinyl pressings from the late eighties. Nada!

Image
Death In June - Nada Plus! [BADVC PLUS 13 USA 2011 24-Bit FLAC] Originally released as a vinyl album on New European Recordings in the UK during 1985. Nada! is an album which should need little introduction to original ESWA followers, however for the first time, here it is in 24-bit FLAC ripped from the double vinyl edition released on Pylon Records in 2011. My original UK pressing has not stood up well to the passing of time, I also have a number of CD versions (some of which are loudly mastered), so this US gold vinyl pressing is a worthy source. This apocalyptic blend of dark post-punk synthwave, monastic chants, doom laden acoustic melancholy and spaghetti western drama has now been given the modern day tag of neo-folk, however it really represents a complex mix of influences and styles. The Nada! album was also to be the last from what was the original line up (Tony Wakeford jumped prior to the recording sessions), augmented by the divisive presence of David T...

Spaced Out

Creation Rebel - Starship Africa [ON-U LP8 Gold 2017 24-Bit FLAC] The recent highlights from RSD over the last few years have been the On-U Sound reissues. Here is one of a thousand gold vinyls ripped to deep-spacey-dubby high resolution. There were issues with this rip as I could hear a background (wind-like) whine in some of the quiet parts, so after two days of searching for ground loops, reconnecting then disconnecting then reconnecting everything in my set-up and eventually running test comparisons with other records, I have had to conclude that the issue is with the mastering to the gold colour vinyl ....or perhaps a problem created when the master tapes were baked for this reissue. Anyway, it is hardly noticeable, even with headphones, so I shall press on regardless. Here's what I wrote about this album a few years back... Adrian Sherwood's first production work can be heard on Creation Rebel's fine 1978 album Dub From Creation, but it was this album, rec...

Various - Natures Mortes : Still Lives [P-1149 JPN 1982 24-Bit FLAC] I posted my 1997 compact disc reissue of Natures Mortes : Still Lives back on the old blog a few years ago prior to a huge run of 4AD posts. The original album is quite hard to come by as it was a Japanese market release by WEA. Hey Presto....

Black - Black [WX 137 UK 1987 24-Bit FLAC] History says that Warners got Black wrong and let Colin Vearncombe slip through their fingers. After a couple of indie singles, the multinational picked up Black through the Eternal imprint and then turned their backs on the scouse label. Black went back to being just indie and then released Wonderful Life for the first time in 1986, which then went massive in 1987, when A&M stepped in with the cheque book. Warners realised their mistake and quickly rustled up the Eternal tracks for this mini album which they then attempted to pass off as Black's debut. The rest is history.... Three Blokes & A Drum Machine

Image
The Three Johns - The World By Storm [ABT 012 UK 1986 24-Bit FLAC] Firstly, I need to put my hand up and admit that I have had this rip sitting on a drive for many years ...going all the way back to the ESWA v.1 days, I just kept overlooking it, however I eventually got around to tidying it it up and track splitting this morning. This is the original album pressing with the bonus live 7" single ...kindly donated by penguinflight . To me, The Three Johns were always a great singles band as their quirky takes on life worked best that way, the albums seemed to just be an after thought. These days I have taken more time to enjoy the long players and both this & their excellent debut, Atom Drum Bop needed to be re-appreciated. The key single on this, their second album has to be Death Of The European . Whether you are a brexiteer or a remainiac , or just quietly sitting on another side of the world observing as the current day chaos unfolds, the track just remind...

Savage Republic - Tragic Figures [SAVE 21 UK 1987 24-Bit FLAC] Originally released on the Independent Project Records label (IP 004) in the USA during April 1982. If I was a rich man I would be an IPR completist. All those lavishly packaged, screen-printed, letterpress and individually numbered sleeves wrapped around those intriguing musical delights from the Californian underground would be a joy to own. Unfortunately, I am not that well off, so I have had to do with represses and reissues to satisfy my desire for the works of this important record label. IPR was owned by Bruce Licher, a founding member of Savage Republic. No other band did their own thing any better than Savage Republic. You cannot classify this work, it fits no pigeonhole, it defies you with its complexity blending a masala of audio styles. I have tagged this album as post-punk because Savage Republic came after punk and used its influence to do their own thing. You could tag them as industrial, anar...

The Stockholm Monsters - Alma Mater [FACT 80 UK 1984 24-Bit FLAC] Coaxed from a well used thirty four year old album in glorious higher definition. Burnage's finest with a lot of help from Peter Hook released one of the most important albums of 1984. Those of you in the UK may recall the NME review which slated Alma Mater , whereas Sounds loved it. I too love this record and played it to death for years since release. My vinyl copy was safely stored away following the expanded LTM reissue -  I last ripped a copy during my Factory Xmas extravaganza on ESWA a few years ago, until recently when I dug it out to rip once more to 24-Bits.
