Hot August Nights

Placebo - Ball Of Eyes [MOVLP 1091 NLD RSD2014 24-Bit 176.4kHz FLAC] Expect to pay a small fortune for original pressings of Belgian funk-jazz-fusion troupe Placebo's debut long player. This RSD2014 reissue was pressed at the very same plant as the CBS Records original in The Netherlands. It is not clear what source was used for this repress, Music On Vinyl rarely reveal such details, however they don't suggest it is direct from the original master & charge you three times the price. Recorded over four hot nights in Brussels during August 1971, Ball of Eyes kicks off with a plucky & funky cover of Marvin Gaye's  Inner City Blues - just wait till that bass hits your speakers. You Got Me Hummin ' is a rare vocal rock-fusion track which could easily have originated from the USA in the early seventies. Planes, Humpty Dumpty and   Showbiz Suite  are experimental jazz-fusion. Aria is smoothly sublime groove. The title track is no more than a Marc Moulin pi...

Placebo - 1973 [MOVLP1092 NLD 2018 24-Bit 176.4kHz FLAC] Originally released on an exceptionally rare vinyl album on CBS Records in 1973, here is the second album by Marc Moulin's experimental funky jazz-fusion ensemble, Placebo.  Recorded over two days in Brussels in April 1973, this set also includes one live track revealing the band's diversity mixing funk and seventies electronica, no more so than on Balek and  Re-Union . Music On Vinyl never like to reveal the source material for their releases that often, however there are a few audible hints on this release which suggest the original master tapes were not in great shape.  This rip certainly packs a punch as the tracks vary between a very seventies groove and early electronic experimentation. The mastering comes in at around DR11-DR13 hinting that little compression was applied, therefore remaining true to the original audio.   Placebo - Placebo [MOVLP1093 EU 2018 24-Bit FLAC] Originally released an a very rare vinyl album in 1974 on Harvest Records, it is time to attempt a new rip of this album, released on white vinyl by Music On Vinyl a few years back. This rip is a significant improvement on my attempts back in February 2019. MOV have used the Record Industry plant in Haarlem, NLD to press this version. We know that plant are capable of decent quality pressings (all those Be With/KPM library albums were pressed there), however this is on colored vinyl and we will have to get over a little bonus noise in the quieter sections. Still, this album is essential and no other label has the rights to release it in better quality. To be honest, the noise isn't all that bad, only sporadic and gives me some confidence to track down black vinyl versions of the other two Placebo albums. Placebo was formed by Marc Moulin (out of Bruxelles francophone commune, Ixelles) in 1971 and has no connection with nineties c...

Groovy & Laidback in Brussels

Placebo - Placebo [MOVLP 1093 2018 24-Bit FLAC] Something else from Belgium ....however quite different. Originally released an a very rare vinyl album in 1974 on Harvest Records. Placebo was formed by Marc Moulin (out of Bruxelles francophone commune, Ixelles) in 1971 and has no connection with nineties cross-dressing alt.rock combo of the same name. Moulin went on to become a pillar of the Belgian music scene with Placebo, later as part of jazz-art-rockers Aksak Maboul (with Marc Hollander of The Honeymoon Killers) and then eighties synthwavers Telex. Placebo's third album was self-titled and strikes a solid jazz groove with heavy funk elements, so much so that its hard to believe this came out of Belgium and not New York, Chicago or Washington.
