The Russians Are Coming!

Image
They Must Be Russians - They Must Be Russians [RVS 001 UK 1979 24-Bit FLAC] Recorded at Western Works in Sheffield by Cabaret Voltaire in 1979, here is the debut seven inch self-released single by post-punk pranksters, They Must Be Russians.  Nagasaki's Children is a long lost minimal synth classic, where as the other tracks are just easily forgotten and should be considered as a work in progress as the band experimented with a multitude of genres before settling on post-punk funk for later releases.  A1 Nagasaki's Children A2 Nellie The Elephant B1 Circus B2 I Want To Hold You Now

Tone Floating

Various Artists - TF100 [TF100 NLD 2011 24-Bit FLAC] Tone Float is a Dutch ambient record label focusing on high specification experimental, ambient and minimal music, all released in limited quantities of superbly detailed artwork packages. In 2010, a number of key label artists entered the studio to record a series of collaborations for this double ten inch vinyl set. The two records sit in purpose made sleeves bound into the covers of a hard back book which also acts as a catelogue for the label, detailing the work of each artist accompanied by a range of high quality imagery. The works of Sand Snowman, Moonswift, Dirk Serries (formerly of Vidna Obmana) and Maarten van der Vleuten may well be unknown to most, however this album serves its purpose to make many want to hear more of this beautifully crafted music. Enjoy. A1 Sand Snowman / Theo Travis / Steven Wilson - Like Charcoal A2 Sand Snowman / Theo Travis / Steven Wilson - Trevail B1 Moonswift / Dirk Serrie...

Scissorgun - Assault Two [AAR 002 UK 2017 24-Bit FLAC] Alan Hempsall is best known as lead singer of Manchester post-punks Crispy Ambulance, and the voice who stood in for Ian Curtis at Joy Division's infamous Derby Hall gig . Dave Clarkson is a Manchester electronic instrumentalist who has  a lengthy back catelogue in a variety of guises. Scissorgun was also the name of Crispy Ambulance's reformation album at the turn of the century. Assault Two was a ten inch vinyl mini-album and compact disc set released on Hempsall's Aural Assault label a few years back, featuring five complex post-industrial arrangements leaning on Hempsall's influences from acts such as Throbbing Gristle (no more so than on Dusting For Zika ) and Clarkson's ethereal, eno-esque textures (check out Caballero ). The enclosed compact disc features full length versions of the vinyl tracks with two additional compositions. A1 Bastard Son A2 Dusting For Zika B1 Caballero ...

This Heat - Deceit [ROUGH 26 UK 1981 24-Bit FLAC] The first This Heat album is not an easy listen for the casual listener, the second Deceit takes the concept further towards rock structures, especially on  S.P.Q.R.  and Cenotaph then drags you back into a disturbed hash of  complex industrial art, loops and avant-jazz, progressive punk.  Deceit is not a rock album, it is not a concept album, this is not really art-rock, this is not easy listening... The Durutti Column - A Paean To Wilson [KOOKYDISC 35 UK 2017 24_bit FLAC] Immerse yourselves in the beauty, space and melody of the 21st album by The Durutti Column, recorded as a dedication to the artist's biggest fan, mentor and original manager, the late Anthony Wilson. It is clear from Vini Reilly's inner sleeve notes that Wilson's passing affected the composer so much that he was moved to write this work, initially as a stage performance and then a studio piece. Reilly pulls much from his own work to influence A Paean ... and then adds sprinkles of samples of blues and soul, including Marvin Gaye. Just listen the majestic Brother and the gorgeous The Truth . Does Reilly see Wilson as a brother and a father-figure? Requiem unveils Reilly's expertise with the rock guitar with screeching solos masked by fuzz and distortion, the lengthy and atmospheric Chant utilises the female voice and layers it over electronic beats and acoustic melodies with a wide sp...

The Smiths - This Charming Man [RTT 136 UK 1983 24-Bit FLAC] New rips for 2019 ....I thought I would see how good these two Smiths singles sound on the new set-up. According to the detail on the relevant Discogs page, my copy is a first pressing with the Capitol Records parody logo. I do recall buying it at the old Virgin Records store in Manchester during the week of release so it does show its age and wear in places with a few pops as the result of a scratch. This will be hardly noticeable unless listening with headphones. I have never understood why we needed a Manchester version and a London version, it's Manchester all the way is it not? Don't even get me started on the New York Mix . Actually, while we are on the subject, is it me or has Steven Patrick Morrissey lost the plot (again) with his recent declaration of political allegiance. The Silencers - A Letter From St. Paul [PL 71336 UK 1987 24-Bit FLAC] I think I have finally got my new hardware set-up just how I want it. It has taken me a little while to get used to using a moving coil cartridge rather than a more regular moving magnet one. The Ortofon website boasts of an expanded bass frequency range and suggests a tracking force in the range 21-25 mN, I wasn't happy with the muddier than normal sound on some of my test rips and after some consultation with my dealer, I have settled on dropping that to 17mN. The Mark Isham album was my first rip with that tracking force, here is the second. I discovered this mint copy of  A Letter From St. Paul in a local second hand dealer for a bargain price recently and although I have all The Silencer albums on compact disc (all were featured on ESWA ), I just had to have it.  You don't need to be a Celt to love The Silencers, though sales of their records always seemed to concentrate north of the bor...

Verve - She's A Superstar [HUTT 16 UK 1992 24-Bit FLAC] Today kicks off with a short run of classic early Verve from penguinflight 's boxes,  for starters here is the fabulous She's A Superstar backed with the mind-blowing eleven minute epic Feel .  A1 She's A Superstar B1 Feel Verve - Gravity Grave [HUTT 21 UK UK 1992 24-Bit FLAC] Your main course is Gravity Grave , again ripped from penguinflight' s pristine vinyl to 24-bits of high resolution flac. There seems something quite Floyd'ish about the bassline on this one. A1 Gravity Grave B1 Endless Life B2 A Man Called Sun (Live) Verve - Blue [HUTT 29 UK 1993 24-Bit FLAC] For dessert, it's the three minute catchy and powerful Blue , which seems remarkably short when compared to the other singles ....pop stardom beckoned a few years later with a bit of help from the Stones when Verve became The Verve a few years later and "accidentally" went mainstream.  ...

The Names - Spectators Of Life [7" WEA 18 087 BEL 1979 24-Bit FLAC] It's a bit crackly during the run out, but don't that spoil your enjoyment of this classic debut single by The Names who, back in 1979, were just a new wave band signed briefly to WEA. A1 Spectators Of Life B1 White Life B2 The Drive The Names - Night Shift [FAC 29 UK 1981 24-Bit FLAC] This is a fresh rip from my original Factory single, sounding much better than my 16-bit rip a few years ago on the ESWA blog. Another in my series of fantastic b-sides A1 Night Shift B1 I Wish I Could Speak Your Language The Names - Calcutta [FBN 9 BEL 1982 24-Bit FLAC] Most of you will know Calcutta , some of you may not, all the same here is my 24-bit rip of this classic twelve from The Names, made all the better by Martin Hannett's crisp production. Castalia

Image
Mark Isham - Castalia [208 973-630 DEU 1988 24-Bit FLAC] Out of the worlds of Windham Hill and film scores comes American ambient composer Mark Isham. Castalia (according to mythology) was the name of a nymph who threw herself into or was transformed into a spring to evade the pursuit of Apollo. The spring was then named after her, and it was a source of inspiration for Apollo and the Muses. Castalia was also Isham's first album proper for Virgin Records and it is from a 1988 German pressing that I present this rip.  Isham's muted trumpet leads the listener through five of these six dense atmospheric melodies  except where David Torn's delightful acoustic guitar drifts in and out of washes of ambient strings. To say that I am somewhat pleased with the quality of my rip from this one euro bargain bucket purchase would be a bit of an understatement. Lovers of bagpipes and marching snares need to hear  The Gracious Core . Enjoy. A1 The Grand Parade A2 M...

Image
Dislocation Dance - Slip That Disc! [ORG 10 UK 1981 24-Bit FLAC] Manchester's Dislocation Dance were formed around 1979, adding horns and rhythm to the gloomy post-punk sounds of their home city. Slip That Disc! was their debut mini album released on Richard Boon's New Hormones label. The album sits comfortably alongside contemporaries such as Delta 5 and The Au Pairs, with more than a little hint of the post-Pop Group bands, Maximum Joy and Rip Rig & Panic as well as local cohorts A Certain Ratio ...no more evident than on the funky Under One And Over. The Beatles standard, We Can Work It Out gets a sublime and dreamy rework, which I find adorable. A1 Spare Concern A2 I'll See A3 It's All True... Panic! Sunset Gun - In An Ideal World [CBS 26584 UK 1985 24-Bit FLAC] Staying in Scotland, but with a slight change of mood - whilst this is an album of suckle sweet mor-pop-soul, it's the voices of Louise and Deidre Rutkowski which will be of interest to many. The two sisters gained notable recognition when 4AD's Ivo chose them for vocal duties on many of the tracks for two of the This Mortal Coil albums. These ten tracks are a million miles from This Mortal Coil and Pete Wingfield's production is just glossy and commercial, you even get a Bee-Gees cover thrown into the mix. The album is let down by a poor quality eighties CBS pressing and very oddly, despite the later Rutowski critical acclaim, In An Ideal World has never been released as a compact disc. The French Impressionists - A Selection Of Songs [TWI 070 BEL 1982 24-Bit FLAC] They weren't French, they weren't Belgian, they were from Glasgow. Some retro-jazz-swing from The French Impressionists, led by skilled pianist Malcolm Fisher. Aside from this original four-track EP, their other studio recordings at the time were restricted to Crepescule compilations, including their splendid rendition of Santa Baby on The Ghosts Of Christmas Past .  A1 Pick Up The Rhythm A2 Blue Skies B1 Since You've Been Away B2 Theme From Walking Home

Short Stories

Image
The Durutti Column - Short Stories For Pauline [FBN 36 UK 2012 24-Bit FLAC] Often described as the lost Durutti album following its shelving by Factory Records. Recorded in Belgium during 1983, Vinnie Reilly gathered together a bunch of local musicians, Alain Lefebvre (from Digital Dance on drums), Anne Van Den Troost (from Soft Verdict on harp), Eric Michiels on saxophone and Blaine L. Reininger (from Tuxedomoon on viola) at Daylight Studios in Brussels. He was also joined by Pauline Harrison on vocals, and it is to her that the album is dedicated.  Tony Wilson asked our Vinnie to rework the whole album around the tracks  Duet  and Invitations into a more contemporary classical piece and what followed was the Without Mercy album. Short Stories... was never released as a consequence, however bootleg tapes managed to find their way out and some tracks eventually ended up on compilation albums. Some will be very familiar, like  A ...

Scousers The Pale Fountains released their debut single on Les Disques Du Crépuscule in the Summer of 1982 with a parallel UK release on Operation Twilight, however with the splendid Just A Girl on the A-Side. The Wake - A Light Far Out [FBN 64 BEL 2013 24-Bit FLAC] I have always thought that Caesar McNulty was a bit too angry during The Wake's post-Factory Sarah years, and it didn't suit him. When the band briefly reformed around the turn of the decade he had rediscovered his inner calm, reverting to spaciously constructed & gentle indie pop. Something, if you know their second album, The Wake do rather well. The nine minute title track forms the centerpiece of this work, however If The Ravens Leave,  originally by Caesar and Carolyn's other band The Occasional Keepers,  Methodist and the meandering Sands will be more than enough to keep dedicated Factory-heads happy. A Light Far Out , was originally released on a very compressed and overly loud compact disc during 2012. The vinyl pressing was a must have for this Wake fan, so here it is represented in 24-bit FLAC ripped from immaculate vinyl for your enjoyment. The album failed to sell in any significant ...

Sudeten Creche - Kindergarten [ILL 1712 UK 1983 24-Bit FLAC] A fairly obscure and quite rare Illuminated Records release. Sudenten Creche were a British minimal wave combo who originally contributed to the same EP as Vince Clarke's first public airing as Yazoo (shared on ESWA a few years back). Heavily influenced by bands such as Velvet Underground, (early)Talking Heads and Joy Division, they also loved early synth pop acts such as Depeche Mode, OMD, Cabaret Voltaire and Soft Cell. The result is a dark, yet simply melodic sound. Dance is anything but danceable ...unless you just root your feet to the floor and sway drunkenly on the dance floor. Enjoy! The Beloved - Your Love Takes Me Higher / Awoke [NEW 8101 UK RSD 2019 24-Bit FLAC] I am becoming less and less enamored with the concept of RSD as the major labels flood the stores with stuff you don't really want at greatly inflated prices. This white label 12" stuck out from mass of tush this year as it was a one off pressing of a mid-period Beloved rarity (a band well covered on ESWA before) and ignoring the squelchy aceed remix of their second major label single, it's all about Awoke . The track is an original Waddington and Marsh composition from the sessions for Happiness , but never actually completed and released until now ...and well worth the tenner to add it to my collection. Soft Metals - The Cold World Melts [CT-69 US 2010 24-Bit FLAC] Soft Metals were an analogue synth duo from Portland, Oregon who released a couple of great albums on Captured Tracks before vanishing in 2013. Jah Wobble ‎- The Legend Lives On... Jah Wobble In Betrayal [V 2158 UK 1980 24-Bit FLAC] Post-PIL Wobble's debut long player ripped from an original UK vinyl copy to high resolution FLAC. At the time other members of Public Image were quick to call foul as they accused Wobble of using parts of Metal Box across Betrayal .  I'm not sure how that works considering Wobble wrote the bass parts for Metal Box ? Blackbeard - I Wah Dub [RDC 2002 UK 1980 24-Bit FLAC] Here is the original British master of dub, Dennis Bovell as his alter ego, Blackbeard. Originally from Barbados, Bovell moved to London as a youngster in the sixties and became immersed in the vibrant London West Indian scene. He developed a fascination for dub and honed his skills as the guitarist in reggae act Matumbi, who managed to get signed to EMI's prog label Harvest. Along with art-punks Wire, this was then seen as part of the label's attempt at diversification. Bovell went on to be a producer of great distinction responsible for the desk work on a plethora of reggae singles, as well as post-punks The Slits and The Pop Group. He also produced one single for Factory Records .... English Black Boys by X-O-Dus. I Wah Dub was his second solo album released in 1980 on short-lived reggae label, More Cut Records. Remarkably, according to the credits, Bovell played all instruments on what is a fine album o...

The Durutti Column - Circuses And Bread [901165 EU 2010 24-Bit FLAC] Originally released as a compact disc on Factory Records (FACD 154) and a vinyl album on Factory Benelux (FBN 36) in 1986.  The problem with a serious hardware upgrade is that you just want to listen to (and re-rip as appropriate) your favourite albums to compare how good they now sound. Circuses And Bread was one of those, it was also the test album used to ensure I got my set-up just right. This is the 180gm virgin vinyl Czech pressing released at the turn of the decade on Russian label, Vinyl Lovers. Despite it being a Russian label, this is an official release and uses a 2008 remaster from the original recording. The resulting music unveils a warm and depth lost on the original compact disc versions in my collection - I possess the 1986 Factory  and the 1993 Les Disques Du Crépuscule CD versions. I no longer normalise my audio files during mastering from vinyl, preferring to balance th...

Lisa Gerrard - The Mirror Pool [VIN180LP 021 UK 2009 24-Bit FLAC] Originally released as a compact disc only on 4AD Records in 1995. If there ever seemed to be an album made specifically for the compact disc market (at its peak around 1995), it was likely The Mirror Pool . 4AD never released it on vinyl, in the end licensing it to Vinyl 180, who as the name suggests, pressed it up onto two 180 gram platters for this lush double album package. It is not a flawless pressing, however careful mastering from my high resolution capture subtlety hides the worst.  Pretentious & pompous or creative & contemporary, you decide, I'll just keep listening to Sanvean  and Largo over and over again  ...and again. Bass supremo Bill Laswell joins forces with sub-continental cohorts Lakshminarayana Shankar & Zakir Hussain and Senegalese percussionist Aiyb Dieng for six works of musical karma. The end result may resemble in parts the soundtrack to a Friday night in your favourite curry house, however please put that to one side and indulge yourself in the multi-layers of percussion and atmospheric strings, pinned together by Laswell's fine bass work and rich production. Image
Sugar - Copper Blue [CRELP 129 UK 1992 24-Bit FLAC] I am not going to waffle on too much about an album which we should all own, however any record featuring the three track sequence of A Good Idea > Changes > Helpless needs to be honoured and re-appreciated on a regular basis.  Ripped from my original 1992 Creation Records pressing at full-on levels for extra effect (with absolutely no limiting or compression). This was the era when Mould begun to lose his hair and put on some timber, but everything seemed alright in the world. Something which bugged me for twenty-five plus years is how close If I Can't Change Your Mind sounds to a certain US TV sit-com theme, and then of course there is that proggy organ bit on Hoover Dam  .....maybe it's just me? Never Too Late

Image
Bob Mould - Black Sheets Of Rain [VUSLP 21 UK 1990 24-Bit FLAC] After the Hüsker Dü break up and a period of sobering up, 1989's "mellow" Workbook album could have marked the gentrification of Bob Mould, however it was this, his second solo long player which saw one of the most recognisable voices in post-1980 American rock return to his roots, plug in a fuzz pedal and crank up the volume once more. The album would not deliver any singles proper, however It's Too Late was sold into US rock radio to become a radio-play hit. The track is the standout on the album, reminiscent of the more commercial Hüsker Dü recordings. Despite this being an album of alt.rock standards, the post-paisley psyche influenced Hear Me Calling and the rousing acoustic The Last Night reveal Mould in a variety of moods and also give the ears a chance to recover between the heavier tracks. Again, I am indebted to penguinflight for allowing me access to his vinyl archives for th...

Hüsker Dü ‎- Don't Want To Know If You Are Lonely [W8746T UK 1986 24-Bit FLAC] Another cracker from penguinflight 's vinyl archives - I don't think I ever posted this on any other forum or blog. My memory isn't what it used to be, so perhaps those who have grabbed all my rips over the years can correct me.  From the mega-selling Candle Apple Grey when Hüsker Dü achieved their commercial peak. Hüsker Dü ‎- Metal Circus [SST 020 UK 1983 24-Bit FLAC] A millennial work colleague asked me this week if I shared his love of Blink 182 ....I just laughed and told him to go listen to some  Hüsker Dü. History says Metal Circus was to mark the transition from Hüsker Dü's early hardcore punk sound into more appealing alternative rock, so much so that standouts It's Not Funny Anymore and Diane are more radio friendly. I have always thought of Metal Circus as a mini-album at 45rpm, although Discogs considers it to be a twelve inch single. The Beatnigs - Television [VIRUS 71T UK 1988 24-Bit FLAC] The remarkable debut (and only) single by San Francisco rappers The Beatnigs was produced by Adrian Sherwood. For a short while their label Alternative Tentacles got their facts a little bit wrong and proclaimed the remix was by Tackhead, and crudely stickered over the mistake on the sleeve. John Peel loved them and got them in for a session which I have somewhere - there was also a self-produced album which I bought on cd but I always thought Sherwood would have made a better job of the production. Bruce Soord With Jonas Renkse - Wisdom Of Crowds [KSCOPE 844 UK 2013 24-Bit FLAC] Something a little different and quite up-to-date..... Bruce Soord from Devon is best known as the lead protagonist with British modern alternative rock act The Pineapple Thief, Jonas Petter Renske is the grizzly voice of Swedish doom metal band Katatonia. Together, for one brief period, they were Wisdom Of Crowds . Renske's voice has mellowed a great deal since his 'cookie monster' days and this larger than life hairy beast belts out the vocals with passion and warmth. Soord plays all the instruments, mixing electronica and rock with some considerable skill. For me,  Radio Star is their finest moment as it melts Renske's vocal melodies all over Soord's familiar heavy beats and riffs. It's the kind of song which just sticks in your head, in fact I'll stick my neck out and declare the three tracks on side one of this red vinyl double album are among the very finest...

This Mortal Coil ‎- Filigree & Shadow [DAD 609 UK 1986 24-Bit FLAC] If you read Martin Aston's authoritative Facing The Other Way , you'll know of the many artists who either declined the opportunity to sing on Filigree & Shadow , or even allowed Ivo to cover their work. It is best to put those to the back of your mind, if this album, like me, is one of your favourites of all time. 4AD's own Robin Guthrie, Elizabeth Fraser, Brendan Perry and Lisa Gerrard all declined, however Simon Raymonde, the Rutkowksi sisters, Dominic Appleton, Alison Limerick, Richenel and Peter Ulrich all stepped up to record one of the most evocative covers albums ever. Isn't it about time that Modern English got the recognition they deserve as according to Ivo's account in Richard King's How Soon Is Now book, it was the 16 Days Modern English re-recording sessions which were to inspire the ideas behind what was to eventually become the This Mortal Coil concept.  A1 16 Days - Gathering Dust B1 Song To The Siren B2 16 Days (Reprise)
