The Prophetic Herbie Nichols
Herbie Nichols Trio - Herbie Nichols Trio [BLP 1519 USA 2023 24-Bit 176.4kHz FLAC] Originally released on Blue Note Records in 1956. Now lauded as one of the most innovative jazz pianists of his time, Herbie Nichols was widely overlooked back in the fifties, consequently original pressings of this album are very rarely found on the open market. Blue Note have now revived this album from the original master tapes as part of their Tone Poet Series, cut by Kevin Gray at Cohearant Audio. Recorded at the Van Gelder Studio in August 1955 with drummer Max Roach and bassist Al McKibbon and completed in April 1956 with Teddy Kotick replacing McKibbon on bass, the debut album by the Herbie Nicholls Trio was mostly self-compositions, including The Lady Sings The Blues which the pianist wrote for Billy Holiday.
