African 'Trane

Image
The John Coltrane Quartet - Africa/Brass [YS-8501-AI JPN 1976 24-Bit 176.4kHz FLAC] Originally released on Impulse! Records in 1961. John Coltrane's sixth album and his first for Creed Taylor's Impulse! label didn't just feature his quartet as suggested - the assembled musicians totaled 21, which must have been a bit of a squeeze in Rudy Van Gelder's studio. The fact that each instrument has its own space in the sound stage is testament to the exceptional standard of a Van Gelder recording. Side one is dedicated to the sixteen minute title track with its blaze of horns, whereas the flip contains McCoy Tyner's very unique interpretation of Greensleeves and another Coltrane composition, Blues Minor . Enjoy. A1 Africa B1 Greensleeves B2 Blues Minor

Steamy Sunday In November

The Miles Davis Quintet - Steamin' With The Miles Davis Quintet [APRJ 7200 USA 2022 24-Bit 176.4kHz FLAC] Originally eventually released on Prestige Records (7200) in 1961. I'm currently reading the Miles Davis autobiography and am at the stage in his career where he is about to switch between Prestige Records and Columbia Records. As part of his exit package, he agreed with Bob Weinstock to produce a final series of albums; Cookin' , Relaxin' , Workin' and Steamin' with his then quintet of John Coltrane on sax, 'Philly' Joe Jones on drums, Red Garland on piano and Paul Chambers on bass. As usual the series was wonderfully recorded & produced by Rudy Van Gelder in Hackensack, NJ during May & October 1956. In the book, it was fascinating to read how Davis's relationship with John Coltrane was diminishing a great pace. Davis was reformed heroin addict, however the younger Coltrane had fallen fowl to addiction and his performance (especially...

Le Grand Jazz Session

Michel Legrand Featuring Miles Davis -  Legrand Jazz [IMP 6028 USA 2017 24-Bit 176.4kHz FLAC] Originally released on Columbia Records in 1958. French composer, arranger and pianist Michel Legrand assembled thirty-one American jazz greats over three recording sessions in late June 1958 for his own big band arrangements of eleven jazz standards. The list of the assembled talent is impressive, and likely the greatest ever for one project; Miles Davis (a headline act who appears on three tracks), John Coltrane, Paul Chambers, Teo Macero, Herbie Mann, Bill Evans, Bill Webster, Art Farmer & Donald Byrd are amongst those who play their parts. This release originated from a two-track all-analogue mix down from the original studio session work prints and cut by Chris Bellman on Bernie Grundman's all-tube lathe. The First Coltrane

Image
John Coltrane - Coltrane [APRJ 7105 USA 2022 24-Bit 176.4kHz FLAC] After his early years as a Navy musician, and then Dizzy Gillespie's Orchestra & Johnny Hodges Orchestra, John Coltrane's work as part of The Mile Davies Quintet provided him with the opportunity to record his first album proper for Prestige Records. Originally released on Prestige in 1957, Coltrane was recorded by Rudy Van Gelder with Paul Chambers on bass, Al Heath on drums & Red Garland on piano, Sahib Shihab added baritone sax and the line-up was completed with Johnny Splawn on trumpet. Four out of the six tracks on this album are covers, but it is really the two Coltrane penned tracks  Straight Street and Chronic Blues which stand out.  Just a few months later, Coltrane would be recording his classic album, Blue Train for Blue Note Records. This pressing is the 2022 repressing on 200gm vinyl, cut by Kevin Gray from the original mono tapes and pressed for Analogue Productions...

John Coltrane - Soultrane [APRJ 7142 USA 2022 24-Bit 176.4kHz FLAC] As the world awakes to recover from the annual hysterical, crass over-drama and general tackiness of Eurovision, it is a beautiful spring Sunday morning and it is time for calm. Analogue Productions have finally repressed their 2014 all analogue remaster by Kevin Gray, pressed onto 180gm flat-edge profile vinyl by QRP, wrapped in a glossy tip-on jacket by Stoughton Printing Co.
