What Lies Within

Dead Can Dance - Toward The Within [DAD 4015 UK 1994 24-Bit 176.4kHz FLAC] I've had a few requests to re-post my May 2020 rip of Toward The Within since last week's upgrade rip of Dead Can Dance's debut album. I was going to re-post it to Digitalia, however instead a change of plan, here is a brand new 176.4kHz rip. Following their post-punk period, I found Dead Can Dance to be both creative & downright pretentious, whilst their eclectic interpretations of world music fitted perfectly with the new compact disc generation. As part of the 4AD roster for most of their career, they were just allowed to get on with what they did when Ivo's attention was on the new developing American alternative rock of Throwing Muses and their ilk. This live album, recorded on the 16th & 17th November 1993 at The Mayfair Theatre in Santa Monica is a fine example of how good they are live. Originally an album, video cassette and laser disc, the edited set was eventually a DVD. Th...

Dead Can Dance - Dead Can Dance [CAD 404 UK 1984 24-Bit 176.4kHz FLAC] I really wanted to revisit this album, as never happy with my April 2019 rip I was keen to hear if various upgrades since could help what sounds like an album recorded in a padded cell. This is Dead Can Dance coming out of their post-punk roots and discovering a much wider world of musical influences. Here's what I wrote back in 2019.... The story of early Dead Can Dance is an interesting one.... Anglo-Irish Eastender Brendan Perry emigrated from London to New Zealand with his parents in the mid-seventies before he settled in Melbourne, Australia. There he got into music, playing bass with local punks The Scavengers who went on to have a minor Aussie hit as The Marching Girls. Perry left The Marching Girls to form dark post-punk outfit Dead Can Dance in 1981 before he saw Lisa Gerrard perform live with her messy new wave band Microfilm. The two became a couple and she was invited to join before Dead Can Dance ...

Return To The Garden Of Antipodean Delights

Dead Can Dance - Garden Of The Arcane Delights [BAD 408 UK 1984 24-Bit 176.4kHz FLAC] There have been quite a few tears on social media media recently when it slipped out that Dead Can Dance were no more (again), so for all those who don't feel damaged by the fact that Lisa Gerrard and Brendan Perry will never perform together again, it is time to re-appreciate one of their finest early works, and let them enjoy their musical retirement in peace. An old price sticker which I removed from the sleeve and placed on the inner bag carbon dates my purchase to late summer 1984 at my old vinyl haunt, Record Corner in leafy Surrey. This really is an old gem from my college days which I likely heard for the first time on Peel. This is their only single (more an EP) which snuck out shortly after the debut album and bridges the gap, like the missing link between Joy Division & The Cocteau Twins, from the old to the new, more wordly Dead Can Dance. There is no doubt that both Perry and G...

Dead Can Dance - Garden Of The Arcane Delights [BAD 408 UK 1984 24-Bit FLAC] Another old single which I've ripped for other blogs ...and another new rip on my new kit, and as expected a huge improvement. There is no doubt that both Perry and Gerrard have amazing voices, Perry sounding very much like Scott Walker, whereas Gerrard has an amazing vocal range, very well documented on her highly successful film score work. The problem was that they were just too pretentious for their own go...

Dead Can Dance - Toward The Within [DAD 4015 UK 1994 24-Bit FLAC] Here's the first of two 4AD double albums, both carefully extracted from aging vinyl - Toward The Within has a few blemishes, most of which will now be inaudible, except in just a few of the quiet sections. Following their post-punk period, I found Dead Can Dance to be both creative and pretentious - this live album, recorded during 1993 at The Mayfair Theatre in Santa Monica is a fine example of how good they are live. Originally a video cassette and laser disc, the edited set was eventually a DVD. Gereard and Perry have amazing voices, no better represented live on stage. I was lucky enough to see them on stage during their 2018 tour when they played a similar set dispersed by a few newer tracks. A1 Rakim A2 Persian Love Song A3 Desert Song A4 Yulunga (Spirit Dance) B1 Piece For Solo Flute B2 The Wind That Shakes The Barley B3 I Am Stretched On Your Grave C1 I Can See Now C2 Ameri...

Lisa Gerrard - The Mirror Pool [VIN180LP 021 UK 2009 24-Bit FLAC] Originally released as a compact disc only on 4AD Records in 1995. If there ever seemed to be an album made specifically for the compact disc market (at its peak around 1995), it was likely The Mirror Pool . 4AD never released it on vinyl, in the end licensing it to Vinyl 180, who as the name suggests, pressed it up onto two 180 gram platters for this lush double album package. It is not a flawless pressing, however careful mastering from my high resolution capture subtlety hides the worst.  Pretentious & pompous or creative & contemporary, you decide, I'll just keep listening to Sanvean  and Largo over and over again  ...and again. Enjoy. A1 Violina: The Last Embrace A2 La Bas: Song Of The Drowned A3 Persian Love Song: The Silver Gun A4 Sanvean: I Am Your Shadow B1 The Rite B2 Ajhon B3 Glorafin B4 Majhnavea's Music Box C1 Largo C2 Werd C3 Laurelei ...

The two became a couple and she was invited to join before Dead Can Dance decided on a move to the UK in search of a deal in 1982. Shedding other members in the process, Perry peddled the band's wares to labels such as Mute and Factory before securing a deal with 4AD. This is their debut long player, ripped from a cleaned up original pressing released on 4AD during 1984. Both Perry and Gerrard are among t...
