Winston Tong – Theoretically Chinese [TWI 549 BEL 1985 24-Bit FLAC] Here is the debut solo album from former Tuxedomoon puppeteer Winston Tong., like his Tuxedo'chums, Tong relocated to Belgium from San Francisco in the early eighties and for this album he made the transformation from performance art to synthpop with a big hand from former Associate Alan Rankine. This record features an impressive line-up of cohorts and contributors, with Rankine adding guitars and synths, Dave Formula (former Magazine) on keyboards, Steve Morris (New Order) on drums, Simon Topping (ex-A Certain Ratio) on percussion and Jah Wobble (ex-PIL) on bass. I have never been a huge fan of Tong's voice and there are elements here where he get's a little too arty for me, however he does let rip on the mighty emotive No Regrets in true Scot Walker or is that Billy Mackenzie style (the song is a Rankine/Tong original).
