Patrick Cowley - Some Funkettes [DE-283 USA 2020 24/88.2 FLAC] In the last few years, Dark Entries have delivered some amazing releases as they accessed the extensive and mostly unreleased archives of the late Patrick Cowley. What is best about this body of work is that it has remained clear of Cowley's disco work, instead focusing on his early electronic experiments and left of field soundtrack work. Some Funkettes is (as the title suggests) a collection of works which bridge the gap between early electronica and disco but remaining true to the original ethos of their project. You will recognise a few of the titles, but these are not as expected, everything gets stripped back to the roots of Cowley's influences with a rawness never heard on his eventual work in the mainstream.   Donna Summer - I Feel Love (Patrick Cowley Mega Mix) [5389337 UK 2019 24-Bit FLAC] I was contemplating a rip of my scratchy old  1982 pressing of this electro-disco classic, until I fell into a copy of this recent repress for the nu-disco market.... and they have done it justice. As a bonus you get an extended version of an Earth, Wind & Fire standard on the flipside. More Moroder very shortly ...with some more Cowley to follow when time allows. Patrick Cowley - School Daze [DE-052 USA 2013 24-Bit FLAC] As a young straight man in mid-eighties Britain from a middle class suburban family with a grammar school education, and a love for indie-pop and obscure musical alternatives, it was unlikely that the individual works of Patrick Cowley would come anywhere near my radar. I had frequented a few low ceiling-ed smokey, sweaty & dark nightclubs in Manchester where his influence boomed from over-stacked PAs but I was not wary and only knew of his popular hits with Sylvester etc. These days, Cowley is rightfully revered as a electronic pioneer, blending his influences from seventies German electronica and seventies American disco to develop a style which went on to breed a whole swathe of eighties synthpop bands, many of whom we still all love today. Yes, some of Cowley's song titles, images and lyrics were a little risque, but it is his music which should be treasured.  The Dark Entries label has done splendid...
