Listening To The Higsons

The Higsons - Got To Let This Heat Out [12 WAAP 1 UK 1981 24-Bit FLAC] Immortalised by Robyn Hitchcock & The Egyptians in 1985, this is the first time that I have ripped my original Waap records twelve inch single of classic punk-funk. It took a bit of a deep clean and the results are spectacular with its punchy funky bassline, jangly guitars, screeching horn section and tight rhythms. The real gem could well be the full six minute and twenty-three version of It Goes Waap adorning the flipside. I love this rip so much, I have just debuted The Higsons at 176.4kHz. Curse Those Higsons

The Higsons - The Curse Of The Higsons [UPLP 6 UK 1984 24-Bit FLAC] A wholly new rip and a substantial upgrade from my last 2012 rip of the only proper album by The Higsons. Their unique style of quirky pop-punk-funk was good fun, and together with The Farmers Boys and the wonderful Serious Drinking, the 'Popular Sound of Norwich' was born. Unlike The Farmers Boys, The Higsons never broke through into the big time, but after a series of great singles followed by this album, they did have the chance to leave their mark on British indie pop. Heat is a rerecorded version of their 1981 classic single  Got To Let This Heat Out , as immortalised by Robyn Hitchcock, Push Out The Boat and a cover of  Music To Watch Girls By flirted with the lower reaches of the hit parade, however  Run Me Down (a single for Two-Tone Records) bowls me over every time. Have a great weekend everybody. A1 Where Have All The Club-A-Go-Gos Went Went? A2 The Junk Keeps Piling Up A3 ...

Charlie's Bongos

The Higsons - Conspiracy [WAAP 2 UK 1982 24-Bit FLAC] About eight years ago, I met British TV personality, comedian and author, Charlie Higson - and always the one who wants to be a smart arse, I blurted out " Did you ever find who stole your bongos, Charlie? ". Our Charlie, once a rebellious UEA student of good up-bringing turned punky-funkster turned Hampstead set luvvie clearly did not want to be reminded of his musical past and seemed a little unhappy with my my sarky wit... Back in the day, I was a big Higsons fan and still have most of the releases by the band which carry his name. Here is my favourite single backed with the superb Touchdown . Those keen of eye and who know their stuff will likely recognise the talented Terry Edwards on guitar and sax on one of their occasional TV performances back in the eighties. A1 Conspiracy B1 Touchdown

Put The Funk Back Into Punk

The Higsons - Run Me Down [CHS TT 1224 UK 1983 24-Bit FLAC] This has been on my re-rip list for a while now, finally I dusted off this fun-punk-funk twelve inch which ended The Higsons short association with Two Tone Records. I think that TV pundit and author Charlie Higson wants the world to forget his musical past, I'd say that will be kinda difficult when your band bears your name! The A-side is infectious and funky, the B-side leans much more towards earlier Higsons singles. An album followed on Upright Records and is well worth tracking down, but please avoid the awfully mastered CD set reissued in 2013 by Cherry Red.
